James tilted his head at the breakfast table, the list of activities in his hand, trying to decide what he wanted to do exactly. This whole trip had been making him push out of his comfort zone in strange ways, particularly the seclusion of it all. But he tried to make the most of it by leaning to the person beside him at the table. “So what are you thinking of partaking in today?” He asked nonchalantly, taking a bite of an apple.

“Hiking” Clarke said a little absently as his eyes remained on the activities list for a moment or two as he weighed up his final decision. Resolved, he looked up from the page and to James with a nod of his head and a small smile, “I’m gonna go hiking again. I actually kind of like it when other kids aren’t complaining the whole time or slowing everybody else down,” he was thought of Tilly in particular as he spoke. “What about you? Any exciting plans for the day?”

Clarke was genuinely ecstatic to be a part of Eric’s birthday scavenger hunt. When he’d heard the idea he’d admittedly worried that Tilly would become frustrated by having to work for her gifts instead of being showered with them on command but as it played out, he got a distinct impression that it was going well. He waited patiently for Tilly’s arrival, clue card in one hand, beautifully wrapped, ornate gift box in the other. His role in the event was relatively small but it didn’t stop him from feeling like a part of the team, something he had strived for since his first day in Northlake.

“Wait,” Liv started, plucking the marker out of the boys hand and moving towards the wall herself, adding her own addition of ‘No one wants to’ in front of the curse word before stepping back and admiring their handy work “No half bad, and here I thought you were friends with the tit herself”

“That’s it, that’s perfect,” Clarke admired the word of art as if he was standing in the Louvre and not in front of offensive graffiti. “Nice work,” he agreed with a smile on his face. He shrugged his shoulders, “I am friends with her, sort of. Don’t go asking Tilly that, she’ll pretend she doesn’t know me. We have a...an unusual sort of a relationship,” he looked back at the graffiti for a moment, “She’s away on a hunting trip at the moment, this is exactly what she should return home to. Just so that she can be sure we haven’t forgotten her in her absense,”

“You know,” Liv stopped to admire a crudely drawn word spraypainted on the wall outside “I kind of admire the boldness of it. I mean- the word f u c k- so edgy, so- screw the man, you know?” 

Clarke furrowed his brow as he observed the scrawlings on the school’s wall. A moment later he reached into his bag, pulling out a permanent marker and adding ‘Titty Worthington’ to the graffiti. “That’s what was missing,” he decided as if it had been some sort of a puzzle in need of solving.

“Why are we acting like we don’t know who put that video out there? We all know who did it.”

“Do you have any proof of that? I’m listening,” Clarke wasn’t sure that the Southsider had any knowledge of the mystery culprit but he was starting with a blank slate, he needed all the info he could dig up if he hoped to make the discovery before anyone else.

“It’s no question what happened today was messed up. Disgusting anyone would think that was okay at all. It makes me feel gross just hearing about it” Garrett admits, hugging himself as he looks to the ground in discomfort. He takes a deep breath in, shaking his head to clear it before looking back up towards the other. “Would you maybe want to come with me to the lake? Maybe go swimming, get our minds off it?”

“Look, I live for high school drama, it’s the blood in my veins but yeah, kinda. They went too far this time. Do you know the girl? In the video?” Clarke questioned with eyebrows raised, “I don’t think I’ve said a word to her,” he confessed, she looked somewhat familiar but he couldn’t be sure why.  “I’ll walk with you,” he offered, “I haven’t gone swimming in...maybe like, a year, I think” he admitted, it wasn’t as if Wisconsin accommodated swimming all that often.

        he already climbed himself on to an island, knocking down plastic cups on his way up there.   his hand, in his drunk state, lifts his own red solo cup in the air as he clears his throat.        “      this one’s to you, cassie! for throwing us a kick-ass party! and for having a kick-ass body!      ”    then, a booming whoo echoes from his throat as he struggles to get back down.  whispering and laughing to the closest person.      “      i just said it ‘cause it rhymed.      ”

“we should probably have a moment of silence for her rockin’ body, she’s going to be rubbing cocoa butter on her stretch marks on her first day of college,” he lifted his cup to cheers Xander, though he was pretty sure the jock hadn’t really meant to engage in conversation with Clarke.

thankfully clarke quickly dismissed anne’s suspicions, easily admitting defeat with a “ alright, fair points. ” but she would be keeping the rest of the lgbt club in mind for potential culprits. she was glad someone else finally said it and she didn’t have to. “ nothing, we have nothing in common. aside from living in the same town but with that logic all of northlake should have gotten one. ” she said. “ as for message, no freaking idea. now that it seems to form a sentence, maybe it’s a demand for the truth. or a treat of the truth. whatever the hell the truth is. ”

“You were never friends with him? Never did anything to him you might regret?” he asked. Sure, it wasn’t the nicest thing to encourage somebody to think about but there was no use in playing nice now, they had a mystery to solve. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jaimie’s name pop up on the gossip blog...maybe it’s his truth and you’re supposed to get it out of him,”

it’s clear from the wrinkle between her brows that she’s thinking hard. musical stuff was all pretty much mass printed now that the show was nearly ready and prom was still too far away. no one else was really putting up posters for anything, no one except … eyes flick up suspiciously to clarke. “ if you’re pulling some elaborate prank now is your one chance to admit it, because the only club that’s really been putting up posters is lgbt club for pride. ” despite having just defended him, she was now considering putting nair in his shampoo. 

“If I was pulling some kind of elaborate prank, you can be sure it would be far more hilarious than this. Besides, between my full-time job as Tilly’s errand boy and school, where do you think I’d find the time to plot something like this- and why would I pick Jaimie?” he asked, his face changing almost immediately as the thought dawned on his “Wait a second- why would anybody pick Jamie? What has Jaimie got in common with you? There has to be a link somewhere. We’ve been so focused on the note itself...we should be thinking about the message and who its being delivered to.”

anne shrugged as she took the phone off clarke. “ what are cousins for ” she states as she typed away. “ and i can’t have people saying you look like bart simpson because that means i look like bart simpson. ” she pointed out, mostly jokingly, glancing up with a smile before she finished off the text. then she’s looking at the notes again. both her own on the bed between them and the image of jaime’s open on her computer. “ i don’t know, just some sort of black marker. ” she says at first, not really offering anything too useful. but then she continues as she looks at the notes some more. “ bigger than a sharpie. more whiteboard marker size if not a little bigger. ” she assessed. “ they could have just stolen a marker from a classroom or something. ” she offered, not convinced many people actually owned markers of that size besides teachers maybe.

A sincere smile formed on Clarke’s face. Of course he knew that Anne had his back and always would have his back but real time reminders like this one were still nice on occasion.  “Maybe those poster markers? Can you think of any clubs or similar that have been putting up posters lately? Anyone who might have been using these markers for something else?” he suggested, convinced that if the notes had been written with some unique marker, the author must have been familiar with it beforehand.

that earned nothing but a flip of the bird and a mocking face in response from anne. although their shared nan had only just gotten email recently, so maybe it wasn’t that far from the truth. anne surely didn’t understand clarke and tilly’s relationship, but if clarke wanted to call it a friendship then it was more positive than she’d ever interpreted. she leaves a moment of silence, she doesn’t want to insult his pride but she also doesn’t want him to be that insulted by people that were supposed to be her friends. “ pass my phone? ” she requests pointing to the device at the end of the bed. “ i’ll text her, let her know she’s being … ” she trailed trying to think of that evil guy in the simpsons “ she’s being a real mr. burns. ”

“Oh, nice callback,” Clarke complimented Anne’s attempt at referential humor with a chuckle as he reached for Anne’s phone, grunting as he stretched his lazy body, having hardly moved for at least an hour. “Thanks for the backup,” he commented more sincerely, as he handed Anne her phone. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t expected it from Anne, the loyal creature she was but still, he was grateful for it. With that, Clarke was finally switching back to the task at hand; investigating the note that had been left in Anne’s locker. “Seems like it’s actually pretty easy to break into the kind of locks we have at school so we’re not looking for anybody particularly skilled here...doesn’t narrow it down at all,” he said with a sigh “What else...maybe we can narrow it down to what it was written in? What do you think?” he asked, inspecting the note carefully, trying to figure out the source of the ink or paint that had marked the paper.

“ i don’t know these things! ” anne protested quickly, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen a whole episode of the simpsons. much less made note of whether or not the characters had noses. “ well yeah, ” she almost said because tilly liked him but caught herself in time. she would never hear the end of it from either of them. “ she appreciates you. or the coffee you get her. i’m sure she’s well aware you’d put salt in it if she really pissed you off. ” she said, now seemingly reaching the end of the thread, “ does she seriously not know your name? you’re with me and tilly like, every morning. if not just tilly. ”

“Right, I forgot that planet Northlake only got color television in the year 2010,” he mocked dryly as he shifted his laptop back onto his lap. It may have looked as if he was going to return to their investigation but really he was googling Bart Simpson to compare it to his own face, just to make sure that Cassie was wrong. “Our friendship is a very, very thin tightrope,” he assured, convinced that both he and Tilly were consistently about as close to becoming best friends as they were to murdering each other in cold blood.  “Oh, she knows my name. She knows my name,” he asserted boldly, “She’s making a statement. Albeit a stupid statement but a statement no less. Message received, indeed,” Clarke was clearly insulted by the whole event, he didn’t take particularly kindly to unprovoked animosity, even from a queen bee. Unless it was Tilly or Geles, of course.
