“Some people usually ask them how they’re doing and invite them in for some iced sweet tea or a glass of soda,” Reyna provided the alternate reaction. How many years has she been in America and still not gotten used to the customs here? Reyna looked at him with a look of disbelief. What are these people driving? Carts? “It’s blue and white, with the letters ‘BMW’ on it. But I’m going to assume you still have no idea what I’m talking about, so I’ll take that detector.” Reyna followed him, disregarding the risk she was taking by just following him to the back of his house. While she waited for him, she continued to keep her eye out for her keys. “So why do have a metal detector? Searching for gold and silver?” she asked him once he walked back out and following him to the back. “Found any valuable treasure with it yet? If it’s able to detect my keys, I’ll let you take it for a joy ride.”
“I keep myself busy fixin’ shit, I like to collect rustic pennies as well,” he half-lied. “Thanks but no thanks, I’m perfectly happy with my hunk o’ junk truck.” Clark was a very simple man, he didn’t need a shiny car to feel good. His truck was for work and kept his toolbox(es) neatly kept away, safely.
He finally opened the shed then rummaged for a good thirty seconds before finding the metal detector on the far end of the building. “Just return it is all I ask. It’s a good one, couple hundred dollars. Not as shiny as yer car I take it but its still my baby all the same. Lemme show you how to use it.” He flipped the switch that said from Off to On, and gestured for her to put the headphones on. “I know they ain’t stylish but there’s no other options. Unless you want me to drive this thing, I don’t care either way.” He probably shouldn’t trust Reyna with something so expensive (well, for him it was expensive since he made honest and minimal cash. Too often did he give townspeople the ‘friendly discount.’ He knew it was a bad idea, but he couldn’t help it. He’s a lover not a fighter). However, the damned thing was so clunky he didn’t think she’d want to lug it around for any longer than she had to.
