Regulus and James spent the rest of the week strategically avoiding each other whilst at school and speaking all evening like they really were hormonal teenagers.
This evening, whilst they were on the phone, Regulus caught himself physically kicking his legs in the air behind him, like you see teenage girls doing in those ridiculous teen movies. It was only by the grace of a higher being that he hadn’t been giggling at the same time.
“You alright, love?” James’ soft voice asked over the video chat.
Regulus tilted is head quizzically. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Oh, so, the wrinkle in your brows isn’t cause you caught yourself kicking your legs in the air?” James teased and Reg felt himself flush red with embarrassment and he buried his head in his arms.
“Oh my god, don’t!” He whined.
James laughed. “I can’t help it. You’re just so-”
Regulus’ head shot up. “If you say one more word, I’m breaking up with you!” Regulus threatened as he scowled at James. Which clearly had no effect as he watched James bite on his lip and Regulus sighed. “Eugh, fine.”
“Cute! You’re just too cute!” James exclaimed loudly.
Regulus decided to try and quickly change the topic as he sat up and moved to lean back against the headboard.
“Do we have a plan for Saturday?”
“Ah, I’m glad you asked. So, I have a proposition to make, but I don’t want you to think I’m trying to get fresh.”
“Get fresh? Calm down, Rizzo.” Regulus joked and James stuck his tongue out.
“Alright, alright. But you know what I mean.”
“James Potter, are you asking me to stay the night?”
“Well, it would just be more convenient. It’s best for us to get an early start, so we can get a good spot in the carpark and on the beach. So, I thought, rather than make you get up super early, you could stay over and then I would only need to wake you a little early.”
Regulus pretended to ponder the proposal. “Hmm. Well, I have a couple of questions first.”
“Firstly, would you pick me up from here after work, or will I surreptitiously follow you home? Secondly, will Harry be home? I don’t want to freak out the poor boy any more than we already have.”
James jumped in. “Harry is at his mums this weekend. Confirmed multiple times, no chance of him appearing without notice. Which leads back to question one. Harry will be going to his mums straight from school, so you can either drive yourself back to my place, or I can follow you back to yours and bring you home from there.”
“That might be a good idea. That way I don’t have to bring an overnight back to school.”
“Does that mean you’ll stay?” James looked so excited by the prospect.
“I’ll think about it.” Regulus smirked.
“Seems fair.” James tried to stifle a yawn but failed.
“It’s late, James. We should get some sleep.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. Oh, before I forget, how to you feel about sand?”
Regulus blinked rapidly. “I’m sorry, what?” He asked with a chuckle.
“Just a thought. How do you feel about sand?”
“I mean, I don’t like that it gets everywhere, but I prefer it to shingles, if that’s what you mean.”
“Good, just thought I should check you weren’t completely averse to it, so we can still hit the same beach I was thinking of.”
“We’re not going to be directly on the sand, are we?” Regulus asked with sudden trepidation.
James huffed a soft chuckle. “No, love. I’ve got a couple of chairs and a blanket. Don’t worry.”
“Phew. Okay good. Well, on that note, goodnight, James.”
They smiled at each other for a few more seconds and then Regulus sighed happily as he grinned and hung up.
He got himself ready for bed and just as he was settling down, he reached for his phone and sent a quick text.
You: Pick me up from my place?
He didn’t have to wait long for a reply.
