“Today, we’re going to read a book called Kindness,” Sirius said, flicking his wig hair back over his shoulder. Gods, the library was hot today. He could feel his makeup sweating away. By the end of his reading, he was going to look like his face was half melted, not at all the fabulous queen he’d arrived as.
He felt a sudden gust of air blowing across him. The sweet little librarian had moved the fan from behind his desk and positioned it so it was blowing on Sirius.
“Thank you,” he mouthed at the librarian and got on with his reading.
The kids crowded him after, asking for hugs and pictures while their parents chatted to each other. It was one of the best reading days he’d done.
“Sorry, kids, Lady Siri O’Usly needs to go home to her eight cats and her parrot,” Sirius said, carefully extracting the children still clinging to his legs and making sure not to step on any tiny fingers as he walked forward in his stilettos.
“See you next week, my little poppets!” He waved goodbye and headed for the little back room to get changed, winking at the librarian as he passed, swishing his long hair as he went. He swore he saw the librarian’s eyes roll as he smiled fondly and went back to reading his book.
By the time he’d put Lady Siri in her designer bag, the children and their parents had wandered out of the library, leaving it blessingly quiet.
“Same time next week?” he asked the librarian.
“I’m counting on it; the list is even longer than this week, and I’d hate to deal with a herd of upset kids and angry parents. I do not look as good as you in a wig,” he laughed, his honey-coloured eyes shining up at Sirius.
“Oh, darling,” Sirius cooed using his Lady Siri voice, “You just haven’t found the right wig.”
The librarian laughed, ducking his head when a few people looked over at him, scowling at the loud noise. “Tell you what, erm?” He glanced across the desk for some sort of name tag but couldn’t find one.
“Remus,” Remus said helpfully.
“Tell you what, Remus, come over to mine, and you can try on a few of my things. We’ll make a Queen out of you yet.”
Remus blushed profusely, but grabbed a pen and paper and wrote something down.
“My number,” he said as he slid the paper across the desk. “I’m free most nights.”
Sirius’s heart skipped a little beat at how beautiful Remus looked, all shy and blushing.
“Honey, I’m going to be calling you every night.” He winked at Remus and walked out of the library and headed home. He made good on his promise and called Remus that night. They talked for hours. It was the best conversation he’d ever had.
“So,” he asked. “Tomorrow night then?”
