CLASS GUIDE

While magic exists as the foundation of all things, the way that it is harnessed and made to interact with the world varies. As such, these specific set of skills, abilities, and influences have been categorized and labelled classes. Candidly, a class does have the ability to influence a player, but on a practical level, it is often best to view them as skill sets, especially when one is new to learning magic.

While the walls between classes are more tangible compared to aspects, they still have a tendency to overlap, and exist in tandem, in adjacence, and in contrast to each other. All classes keep the others in balance, serving as opposition and complement. In most cases, while they can function alone, working together opens a much wider horizon.

There is no evil or good with the classes, there only is.

The class' interaction with its player often differs depending on the aspect (e.g: an Heir of Doom will have their Heir class constantly attracting bad luck to them, while an Heir of Light will have their Heir class constantly attracting good luck to them), but here is a quick summary of each, though please note that they are malleable to their aspect.

Classes come in passive and active sets, and they complement each other's abilities.

Active - abilities and effects are mostly localized to the player

Passive - abilities and effects are mostly drawn outward

HEIR

to become

Has the ability to embody and become their aspect, often to a literal extreme. This class is often the closest to their aspect, in the sense that they are one and are fated to be one, from the very beginning. M.F.E.O., in a sense, though whether a player fully accepts this is always up to them.

The Heir class serves their aspect (defers to it, on a greater scheme, as an avatar, or through a quest), and in turn is served by their aspect (the class attracts facets of the aspect to them / protects them / etc.).

PAGE

to become

Has the ability to embody, evolve, and elevate their aspect. As the complement to the Heir class, they also embody their aspect, but in a different way. They often redirect this embodiment to other people, and thus recontextualize it or give it greater meaning (e.g: a Page of Light may have uncanny luck due to it being drawn towards them and they redirect it towards other people and thus widen the circle of joy, which in turn may inspire other people to share their own lucky finds).

The Page class evolves their aspect and is evolved by their aspect, a give-and-take relationship that pushes both in some direction, which depends on the player's personality. While the Heir class is often inescapable, the Page class has an easier time separating themself from their fate should they not wish to fulfill it.

MAGE

to know

Has the ability to know their aspect, know by their aspect, and is sometimes be known by their aspect. To know and know by their aspect means they understand it intricately, and use it to glean more knowledge. To be known by their aspect means that their presence and life is often remembered and thought by the things they have done with and by their aspect, which is why they're often known as creation classes - they're known by their body of work and their output due to their skill set facilitating the possibility of being hands-on.

SEER

to know

Has the ability to reveal their aspect / reveal through their aspect, and is in turn revealed by their aspect. As a knowledge class, Seers also know their aspects, often to a deeper level than Mages due to this knowledge being naturally drawn to them. Their class skillset, however, facilitates for very little by way of offense or defense, which is why they often have to pass on their knowledge, sometimes by their aspect (this does not count a Seer's natural abilities, only their CLASS' abilities - please be wary of Seers with glocks). In the process, they can sometimes give insight to who they are and what they are through their machinations, which is why they are said to be revealed by their aspects.

WITCH

to transfigure

Has the ability to manipulate their aspect, manipulate by their aspect, and is in turn manipulated by their aspect.

As the word has taken on a certain stigma in recent time, to clarify: manipulate here is used in the following definition: to, with skill; transform, reshape, reform, transfigure, or rearrange something. Therefore, a Witch takes pre-existing things governed by their aspects and transforms them, depending on their needs. In turn, however, they can be vulnerable in the facets of themselves that are governed by their aspects - the current theory is that this is a failsafe by Skaia to ensure one of the most versatile classes does not go unchecked.

SYLPH

to transfigure

The primary healing class, though this is one of two classical healing classes. Has the ability to restore, restore by, and be restored by their aspect. Similar to a Witch, a Sylph can take pre-existing things and transform them in a regenerative manner, but can only use their abilities on themselves in a limited way. They have one of the lowest generative abilities in Skaia and thus have to work with what is present, so restoration of the self often has to draw from another source. As such, their abilities are mostly used to restore others.

KNIGHT

to protect

One of two wide-reaching protection classes. Has the ability to protect, protect by, and is protected by their aspects. If synergy is present, the Knight class is one of the most favored by their aspects, and is one of the most combat-proficient, as their skillset allows them versatility in offensive and defensive power.

A Knight class protects their aspect, and thus often has a bigger role in the tapestry of fate to keep an aspect together. In turn, their aspect protects them in order to serve its own existence. The current theory for this symbiosis is that they are Skaia's go-to defense protocols to keep everything in balance, like the immune system of an organism, which may mean that a Knight's role and quest can take them far and wide.

MAID

to protect

Has the ability to protect their aspect through generation and is protected by their aspect in the same manner. Has one of the largest stores of magic in Skaia, and is thusly one of the universe's failsafes for its protection. Where a Knight restores through utilizing what exists around them, a Maid restores through filling in the gaps of what is missing, often overflowing with their aspect that it naturally flows out to the rest of the world. They are the universe's regenerative factor, scar tissue where Sylphs mend through what remains. Their role and quest may also take them far and wide, like their Knight counterparts.

ROGUE

to take

One of two heist classes. Has the ability to distribute their aspect and distribute through their aspect - they're functionally similar to thieves except their abilities are better suited for spreading out what they take, especially as most of them often have an abundance of their aspect that trying to keep it to themselves would cause a rebound, and if forced, poisoning.

THIEF

to take

Two of two heist classes. Has the ability to plunder their aspect and plunder through their aspect. Due to a far more spacious capacity for magic storage, Thieves are best suited for stealing their aspect and stealing through their aspect. Technically, they can pass their aspect on, but they're magically built to keep and hide it.

PRINCE

to destroy

Skaia's primary destruction class, has the ability to destroy their aspect and destroy through their aspect, but are destroyed by their aspect. They're the best offensive class in Skaia as their purpose is to often neutralize an overabundance of their aspect, which can lead to something akin to cancer in a universe. All things must be in balance, even aspects, and so they are Skaia's natural defense system for tumors and unwanted growths.

BARD

to destroy

Skaia's secondary destruction class, whose area of effect is more far-reaching and long term compared to a Prince's direct and efficient destruction. Has the ability to disrupt their aspect and disrupt by their aspect, but in turn be disrupted by their aspect. Similar to Princes, they neutralize overabundances, but on a bigger scale, often in uncontrollable bursts, as their influence tends to ricochet.

LORD

to rule

One of two ruling classes. Has the ability to rule over their aspect but is in turn ruled by their aspect - what sets a Lord apart from a Muse, or any other class that technically does already govern their aspect in a certain way, is that Lords are always self-built. Their aspect is not drawn to them, they begin with no magic container, they cannot transform what already exists, and they have a hard time creating or knowing anything about their aspect. They have to piece everything together by themselves, which is why though two Lords can share a classpect, they end up wildly different.

Where an aspect rushes to meet classes who become, this one's aspect will turn away from them. Where an aspect reveals to those who know, this one's aspect will hide from them. Where an aspect bows to those who transfigure, this one's aspect will rebel against them. Where an aspect gives to those who take, this one's aspect will take from them. Where an aspect burns those who stand against its player, this one's aspect will burn them.

They must build their kingdom from sweat and tears, if their aspect does not break them first.

MUSE

to rule

As opposed to the Lord class, the Muse class is adored by their aspect - which is why they are called Muses. Has the ability to submit to their aspect but in turn is submitted to by their aspect. Their aspect bows to their every whim, but in turn, they too bow to their aspect, a heedless push and pull by both parties in both directions. As such, Muses do not so much as move on a field as direct the flow of things through ideas, concepts, feelings, and inspiration. Where a Lord must make their aspect obey them through force, a Muse makes theirs obey through loyalty and admiration.

They are the only class known to begin ascension with their magic at its highest, though they are bound to their aspect's whims.

ASPECT GUIDE

The entirety of the universe is composed of twelve aspects, governing twelve parts of reality, which do not so much as organize everything into neat little boxes as it does ebb and flow into each other. Their realms of governance are specific, but they always overlap, and always exist in tandem, in adjacence, and in contrast to each other. Knight of Rage

Politeness, manners, obedience - something instilled within us for as long as we can remember, and perhaps even longer than that. Respect your elders and figures of authority, follow the rules or else you will be punished, play within the confines set forth by a system so unfairly created yet largely followed. Do it, or you will forever be a figure who only gets nervous glances, whispers that carry your name like that of a timid hand holding a venomous snake, a person forever viewed as a black sheep. It’s simple - just do as Simon says perfectly, and you won’t lose. At least, it should be simple. It should be, yet there is only so much bland, pristine food that people can choke back before it comes bubbling up like boiling oil out of a pipe. There are only so many times someone can check the way they step, how perfect their posture is, before they get sick of it. When you look into the face of a peer, do you see someone as unique and individual as you dream to be, or do you find yourself looking in a mirror - one which reflects the same dulled, silent expression that you find all around your. Is this really the outside world from the safety of your room - your own personal heaven from the Hell that is society - or have you somehow managed to wander into a maze of mirrors where every last face that looks at you is the same aggravatingly bland, perfect, model face? You don’t know, and you don’t want to know, but before you can stop yourself you have already picked up a weapon - a book, perhaps, or maybe it’s your own fist. You start smashing, and smashing, and smashing the mirror until it’s nothing but dust and sand - its most purest form of existence before it was pressed and thrown into the kiln, made to look just like any other mirror. Your parents are called, again, and as you leave, all those blank, uninteresting faces begin to turn and look at you, again.

Homestuck -Aspects take, Masterpost

Hiya~ Something has been in my mind that I never put it on paper (in a way of speaking): What does the SBURB/SGRUB’s aspects symbol are, what do they visually convey?

In this post, I will look at each aspect and write my personal takes, providing some pictures, quotes from both the webcomic and real life people, to support my ideas. I will look at them by complementary pairs.

Since it’s hard work, I will cover 2 aspects at the same time (release date unstable), beginning with Breath and Blood.

Knight of Time

No one ever wants to seem like the weakest link, the sidekick, the leftovers, disposable, forgettable, what have you. We all want to be someone who will be remembered, one way or another, for generations to come. It is the fighters, the warriors, the soldiers who are so often spoken about with admiration and love, and it is the act of heroism that has been so grossly romanticized throughout the ages that it has become embedded within every last piece of media out there. From the knight in shining armor saving the princess from the dragon or evil witch’s curse to something like saving the entire planet from being blown up and torn apart by some outside threat. There will always be a hero eager to fight for what is right, and they are the one who will have their story told, while everyone else just stands in the background and cheers them on. It is not the blacksmith who slays the dragon, but rather the one who gives the knight his sword. It is not the scientists who prevent the asteroid from wiping out all life on Earth, but the man brave enough to go on that asteroid and blow it up, sacrificing himself in the process. While everyone wants to admire these heroes and strive to be just like them, there is one thing that so many people fail to realize; to be the hero, you must first find the fighting spirit that rests inside of you, and use it as the driving force of your journey. Not many people are capable of raising their fists into a fight, but if they truly wish to never be forgotten and instead be a hero worshipped for years to come, then it seems as though their only option is to fight.

Hmmmst (Aspect Synthesis Theory)

Sorry, I had to get one in.  I’m considering that maybe the aspects are literally built out of each other. And so they are reducible/irreducible at the same time (which in hindsight sounds very homestuck).

Some examples would be: Light would be split into the aspects of space and doom as they are the two complimentary aspects on the aspect wheel. Which would make logical sense, since Light players are defined as “rule-breakers” and “resourceful” (being able to draw from their environment.) Light’s closeness to time on the aspect wheel positions it as an aspect of disparity, and thus allows them to navigate both space and the limits contained in those spaces, finding gaps in the rules. In contrast, Void would be a synthesis of Life and Time. It would make sense to be these two since time is connotated with the father and thus paternalism (which Equius is in alignment with, but also to an extent Roxy in her adoption of gendered norms as Mom Lalonde). Life would be the imposition of will onto others/force. Void is more aligned to the aspect of space, which is in opposition to time (disparity). And so, Void must be seen as having a perspective of homogeneity. The implication would be that void players don’t see disparities of time (how things change) which fits with their general rigid attitudes towards things, such as Roxy’s insistence on Dirk being gay despite gayness no longer being a relevant concept, or Equius’ insistence on the hemospectrum still being relevant. It’s my suspicion that all aspects are synthesized out of other aspects in this way, though the complimentary pairs of an aspect are the most prominent characteristics in a character. Whether or not an aspect is aligned with time or space (is it on the left or right side of the wheel) determines how an individual perceives reality (is reality fresh or new, or is it the same as it’s always been).   Lunar sway seemingly aligns with this view as Prospit dreamers (spatially oriented) are associated with the present and conformity to current norms, whereas Derse dreamers (musically/time oriented) are associated with the future and past. Difference/perception of reality as fluid may fuel their rebellion, even if their will is fixed. it’s ideas all the way down.

Absolutely this. An aspect’s opposite/adjacent aspects are all related to it on a deep level.

Mind’s rationality + Breath’s heroism = Hope’s focus on justice in the test description, because justice is based on principles.

But at the same time, Blood = Organized religion (The Sufferer as a Jesus figure) and Heart’s romance are also related to Hope.

Space’s creation + Hope’s imagination = Mind’s emphasis on creativity in the test description.

And on the other hand, branching timelines are driven by Mind, and Mind’s rationality is linked to Rage’s hatred of false beliefs to produce a hatred of lies.

More things to add to this:

In real life, personal identity (Heart) and group belonging (Blood) are two major factors that prevent people from changing their beliefs. Heart and Blood are also part of the half of the wheel that tends to impose limits. Heart limits choices when you’d have to change who you are in order to be able to make certain choices. Blood of course limits the freedom to roam by binding you to people.

Space and hope are related to Mind’s creative focus (and justice! before the test IIRC people thought mind was related to justice, and the test doesn’t mention it, but hope being next to mind would seem to back up a mind-justice link even more). But Time+Rage are what really cause a passionate driving commitment to weaponizing mind. Mind + Time = wanting to know the future, focusing on outcomes and consequences. And hating irrational beliefs (Rage) is an engine that drives a person to commit to rationality.

There’s also a matter of “who you are” being determined mostly by your beliefs.  Moving away from the synthesis stuff… I’m tempted to view the Hope-Life-Rage-Doom relationship as the difference between being empowered by your ego vs being enslaved to it. With the latter two being enslaved to their egos (or indicating the enslavement of the formers). Hope players act on their convictions and thus could be considered enslaved to the rules/boundaries (doom) they strive to uphold.  In contrast, life is not enslaved by rules but rather individual perception and skepticism. A lack of ability to believe in the subjectivity of others/possibilities of reality other than what was directly experienced. From the perspective of Hope and Life players they are empowered by their aspect, but the reader sees the opposite is also true. Believing anything is possible makes one delusional and complacent in current problems (waiting for salvation/death is definitely space and doom-coded). And paranoidly (rage) relying on one’s single experience and logic easily results in becoming tyrants. Hence Life-bounds are “pushy certain they know best” at their worst and Hope bounds are “selfish” at their worst.  Light-Mind-Heart-And Void have a less intense version of this conflict between ego empowerment and ego enslavement. Mind and Void in my mind  combine to produce logic. Logic is rooted in the material world. And while it’s useful for structuring societies, it can also be used to justify human rights violations rooted in physical limitations/support corrupt structures. This explains the “nastiness” of mindbounds at their worst and the “apathy” (cold materialism) of voidbounds at their worst.  Their perceived lack of bias makes them easily malleable to circumstance. Life is also logic oriented, but it’s so passionately oriented towards it’s own logic it neglects all other possibilities, which makes it an incredibly biased logic.  Heart and Light combine to produce the self. Which is inherently resistant to structures (very much so in the case of heart). Light is similar to mind in that it is shaped by external circumstance, however, Light is more fixed and less malleable. Light players are concerned with evaluating their environment and determining the correct self they must form to survive in it, then cultivating that self while trying to protect what is already there.  Heart defies context altogether for the most part and instead focuses on universality of iterations of one self. E.g: Dirk is a “trainer” in all realities independent of context. How that training looks is shaped by context, but at his core (seemingly biologically and thus void coded) Dirk is predisposed towards becoming a warrior trainer. Heart has more rigid boundaries than light does, though the boundaries light players have are usually extremely important to them.

The Truth/The Lies

Void, Light, Hope, Rage

Void represents obscurity, lies, irrelevancy, and nothingness, Rage represents brutal honesty, clearing through bullshit, all that, then Hope/Light is belief and faith and the truth. So obviously you see Rage and Light are more similar while Void and Hope are more similar, despite what you’d see at first glance. Rage and Light is the need for the truth, the things that are true in life (“this exists”), but then Void and Hope would be, say “This doesn’t exist but I fully believe in it”.

These four aspects are directly correlated to each other, and, instead of them being seen as ‘opposites’, they’re a spectrum, like the rest of these will be.
