The Spartan princesses

Penelope → the power of inaction: she rules by omission, by suspension, by waiting. Her weapons are her impeccable image and the art of strategic procrastination. She is the queen of unstable equilibrium: she keeps her home, her throne, and her reputation intact until she can choose openly.

Helen → the power of action and repentance: she is the catalyst for war, the spark that becomes myth. She takes ownership of the blame to strip it of its power and take away the weapon of reproach from others. She is both guilty and innocent, victim and agent.

Clytemnestra → the power of action and impenitence: she acts with determination and vindicates her actions. She doesn't hide her ambition behind acceptable masks. Her transparency in anger and vengeance makes her scandalous and "manlier" to the men of her time.

Thinking about Penelope and her relationship with Athena.

Thinking about Penelope, who had been weaving since she was eight and had worshipping the goddess for longer spotting an owl perched upon Odysseus' shoulder and praying to Athena instead of Aphrodite.

Thinking about Penelope allowing Athena to hold Telemachus — because she was closer to Odysseus, yes, but Penelope had also revered her.

Thinking about Penelope desperately praying to Athena for her husband's safety during the war because surely she would not allow harm to come to him — because perhaps Athena did not love Odysseus with the love that Apollo had for Hyacinthus or the love Aphrodite had for Adonis but it was love nonetheless. He had not been her favorite warrior for nothing.

Thinking about Penelope's dread slowly sinking in as the time passes and still, Odysseus does not return.

Thinking about Penelope catching sight of an owl in Ithaca's palace gardens and silently pleading to know is he alright is he still breathing why is he not here yet—

Thinking about Penelope slowly growing resentful because you were his mentor you were supposed to protect him so why, why, why? Perhaps you did not love him but surely you cared? Surely he meant something? Surely he was more than a weapon to be discarded once he was no longer useful to you?

Thinking about Penelope seeing Telemachus talking to a familiar owl nearly a decade later and growing furious because you stole him and you abandoned him and now you come for my son too, how dare you, how dare you, how dare—

Thinking about Penelope's relationship with the goddess who had loved and taken and left her husband.

Thinking about how Athena's favor had not been limited to Odysseus, about how Athena had also known Penelope too.

I just wanted express my love for the scene witch olive tree. Just so much, in Odyssey it was test to check if it was really Odysseus not another person claiming to be him. In Epic it's BOTH test AND Penelope's way to tell Odysseus how much she lives him. Odysseus view himself as unlovable monster, someone not worth Penelope's love. He's sure that if she knew person he become she stop living him. So he ask her if she fall in love with moster he in he's eyes is. Penelope by asking him to get rid of the bed - symbol of they're love, that's only possible to remove is by cutting it from it's roots - tells him that the only way for her to stop loving him is to cut her love from roots. She been waiting for him 20 years, she never stop loving him. She doesn't fall in love with him again because no matter how Odysseus view himself, in core it's still HIM, it's still her husband she deeply fellt in love. The synfony wersion of "just a man" is selling this point so well. In the end Odysseus is not a monster - he's just a man, not creature born from evil, just a human who's suffered for to long, got pushed far beyond he's limits, put in situations that no one should be. But it didn't made him moster, especially not for Penelope.
