There were only a few minutes until closing at the shop, and Rian was left to close yet again—having been too afraid to decline his coworker’s offer to trade shift. He had already finished getting everything in the pet shop ready for closing other than feeding the fish, which he preferred to do last, as he had put them on a schedule of sorts. He especially loved the larger saltwater fish, which he could pet and play with as he fed them. As he finished sweeping, he heard the ringing of bells as someone entered the shop, releasing a soft exhale of breath. He took in a sharp inhale before making his way over to the other, putting away the broom and allowing his hands to delve into the safety of his pockets as he spoke. ❝——Hey, uh, do you need help with anything in particular? We close in a few minutes, but I don’t mind staying longer if you need help something specific. Or at all, really.❞

That must’ve been an adventure for him in his age. Made it all the way to the hair salon before he was caught. Wish he never was. Man, I should’ve helped him. ’

“Understandable,” Zero stated once the trash was to the curb. “Zero.” Cautiously, he shook the person’s hand. They weren’t used to stuff like handshakes, but Cleo seemed nice enough. “Do you- do you need anything? Like- a drink or something? Booze can help sometimes. Depending on who you ask.”

“a drink would be amazing.” this wasn’t a frequent habit, seeing as that the apple never falls far from the tree. however, letting his father’s actions determine his was the worse habit of all. just the thought made him gag. consequently, cleo looked to the boy with telling eyes and hoped that this wouldn’t turn into some kind of drawn out therapy session. “what are you doing out here anyway? its chilly and this town is so eerie at night.”

Though Zero was never the type to blurt their thoughts, they could still read people rather well. This person had a terribly fake smile that one could read from a mile away. “You’re lying. That’s okay, I’ll still help though.” Zero stood and took one of the trashcans from the person. “Shit- these are heavy. Who’s trash is this? Yours? Have you considered recycling?” The started lugging the trash toward the curb.

the boy’s face rested, knowing his act was a flop. “ just a little spring cleaning. i’m trying to make my place feel more like my place. not the easiest of tasks but i suppose in a couple of weeks, i’ll feel refreshed.” a smile crept back except this time it was honest. emotion was calling the shots and reason was no where to be found. “ thanks for helping me. i’m cleo.” the quick formality was followed by an eager handshake invitation.

nothing was okay. nothing had been okay for a while now, today was just another notch under his bad day belt. however, this was not a public matter so the young boy plastered a smile across his worn face and gave the answer he was supposed to give. “ everything is great actually!  i was just going to see if you could help me lug these trashcans to the curb. my muscles are... lacking and they’re super heavy.”
