When the news broke out, I was heavily disappointed, angry, worried, and slightly suspicious all at the same time. This is Wonho we are talking about and mbbs know him as this soft creature who have always been respectful of women and supportive of male fans and LGBTQ+ community. There is no way he would have done such a thing. But at the same time, we've been bombarded by news these past few months that idols are humans, too, and are prone to mistakes and even crime.
But I stayed silent. Because I remember the clip. I remember this specific clip being part of something longer. Something that was funny and playful BECAUSE IT HAS CONTEXT.
That's why I was suspicious. The timing was off, the clip was cut, and the account that posted it was practically a newborn.
Does this mean that people who expressed their disappointment and anger on SNS wrong? No. Because what they felt was valid. This is a major movement with actual victims affected and to feel violated because what they believe get mocked by someone they love and respected and thought to be supportive is expected. Tbh, if no one reacted, with the topic of the supposed mockery as serious as this one, that would have been more worrying.
However, have we really not learned anything? This cancel culture. This 'we demand an apology because we are hurt' thinking. This judging someone based on someone's words despite the lack of evidence or credibility of the accuser.
It has to stop. We need to learn how to exercise prudence in taking a stand for truth and transparency in this era of misinformation and deliberate disinformation. We need to learn how to take in information and exact judgment on it based on research, context, and facts.
Innocent until proven guilty, right?
Now Starship has made a statement, that it was a misunderstanding but they'll be working on learning and improving themselves so this doesn't happen again.
But for some, it isn't enough. They still demand apology from Wonho and even Minhyuk. This despite the accounts of fans who were there and have proof that the tweet was a deliberate attempt at defaming Wonho and MX days before the cb. This despite the twitter handle itself that posted it owned up to timing it for stronger impact.
Yeah. Let's demand an apology from someone you threatened of abandonment. From someone you wished to not sleep well at night and even die for something he didn't do.
But ig SS should let them apologise because there were people who are hurt. Sometimes, it's not about being right or wrong, it's about wanting to maintain a certain degree of relationship.
If he does though, I hope it centers to the fact that he caused a misunderstanding and not because he did something wrong. Because he didnt.
Sigh. And people question why others hate stan culture.
Ps. I wish SS will take a stand and take legal action against those who sent death threats. No matter how wrong you think Wonho is, wishing him death was disgraceful and criminal.
