Novel Encounters || Biff & Lucy
Biff walked swiftly through the double doors of a local book shop, only stopping for a minute to scan that no one recognizable was in the area. He wanted to avoid idle chatter and above all, he did not want to reveal the contents of his purchase to anyone who actually knew him. Satisfied by the anonymity, he rushed to the section in a corner at the back end, a place that he never imagined returning to. The large sign that hung above him made him all the more nervous: Romance.
He read through the titles quickly, picking three books that sounded familiar enough from the conversations he had with his online acquaintance, Lucy. Satisfied enough, Biff started a confident stride out of the section. He did well today. Or at least he had certain felt so, until his eye caught the sight of her walking in. The last person he would’ve expected and probably wanted to see amidst this sneaking was this individual whom he had never actually met face to face before. Of course, by some product of the classic Biff McIntosh fortune, she was here. Not only that, but she also appeared to be heading straight in his direction.
Biff immediately turned around and walked back into the aisle, thinking that he could go to the other end of the shelves and slip away through the path next to the wall. It was the perfect plan, except he found himself facing a large stack of boxes blocking his way. Knowing that Lucy was approaching even closer, Biff began to feel desperation sink in. With nowhere else to go, he turned to his left, making sure that she could only get a view of his back, then stooped down to pretend that he was tying his shoes.

Yeah, it wasn’t unbearable. I mean, I think it’s impossible to completely avoid jocks who feel the need to yell slurs at me, especially in middle America. And somehow they thought I was both super gay and sleeping with my sister at the same time? Which never made a lot of sense to me.
You have a point there. The middle area of America isn't typically known for being very progressive. You were a male cheerleader with a female twin that you seem to be particularly close with. While I, personally, don’t see anything wrong with your situation, it’s unusual enough to where people will idiotically interpret things.
escortmace:
I suppose. I was always grateful for the pants though myself. But, yes, I agree, cheerleading comes with a ton of stereotypes and it always frustrated me to no end. I guess there are some squads out there who just bounce around for their football teams, but we were a nationally ranked squad! We worked our asses off! We trained constantly.
Hopefully your experience in school wasn’t filled with senseless individuals physically or verbally assaulting you for your unusual position. I believe I’ve only personally known one other male cheerleader from my past, and he still dealt with a bulk of snarky remarks. Although given the impressive standing of your team, I would find a similar situation for you more unlikely.
God, yeah. I can imagine they’d be even worse when they’re wet. What with the… sticking. Well, that is just sad. There really should be more of us. It’san intense and difficult sport and it does wonders for your body.
I suppose they make them smaller so as to avoid too much sticking with more material, but sometimes that just makes it worse. It is rather unfortunate, but I think it’s because there’s such a large stereotype with cheerleaders. Most individuals assume it’s some simple, silly routine for females.
Oh those speedos things? Yeah, I imagine they’re similar. But since these are designed for girls, they really leave no room at all for the necessities. I really wasn’t that mad about going back to my own uniform.
Yes! They're fairly comfortable while in the water, but as soon as you get out, they have a tendency to start riding up. That's still very intriguing, though. Male cheerleaders, I mean. Not that they don't exist, but I hardly ever meet men who were cheerleaders in school.
They’re like underwear but tighter and the cover more. The girls wear them under their cheer skirts. The were not meant for anyone with testicles, I can tell you that much.
Based off of your description, I’d imagine not. I used to complain about the feel of swimming briefs after a certain period of time in the water, but those sound far more restricting.
…So I should probably return my Cinderella ballgown? Both. I think what makes a book sell, aside from quality, is the emotions it brings to the reader. A book could be lesser in quality if it brings more emotion to those reading it. That’s how a lot of not-so-good writers are making the big bucks. Those autobiographies only sell because people are curious to see what kind of dirt they have on the celebrities. It’s the kind of thing I’d never read. Right? It shows that things aren’t always black or white. That there is an immense grey area that most people refuse to see.
No, it’s probably best to save it. It’ll come in handy for your coronation when you finally succeed in taking over the world. Ah, but a book that’s bad in quality probably doesn’t evoke the right kinds of emotions from the readers - if any at all. For me, it has to be a hand-in-hand deal, as I can’t see books having exclusively one or the other. That’s absolutely boorish. If I read a book I don’t want any kinds of dirt, just some decent writing. Unfortunately, there are too many people who treat everything as though they’re always completely black or white.
True. Very true. I guess I’m too old to be reading that sort of story, huh? I don’t think a book would sell much if it was all bad. I mean, the reviews would turn reads away quickly. Well, if I’m honest… Sometimes I find myself hoping the bad guy (or girl) will be redeemed. Not in cases where they are completely evil and need to be taken out. But those who are bad with a purpose–a good one at heart.
I don’t think that there’s a problem with reading children’s books so long as you don’t get to believing that they’re entirely accurate. Bad in terms of quality or emotional content? Because there are a good number of the former that have managed to sell numerous copies, such as... Certain “celebrity” autobiographies. Redemption arcs are intriguing. It’s always nice to see strong, three-dimensional characters.
Even if they end somewhat happy, there’ll always be a loss looming over them. And there is no sadness in the bad guy dying. Unless they were sort of likable.
Only children’s stories get completely happy endings. Still, I think what matters is that the positives outweigh the negatives. Or at least, it’s a realistic thing to hope for. You’d be surprised how many likable bad guys - and gals - there actually are.
While that is very true, and it does make you root for a happy ending even more, sometimes it revolves around a death. There’s no hope for a happy ending there.
Death doesn’t necessarily have to be a precursor to an ending where all of the characters are in complete misery. Plus, what if in a particular story, it’s the antagonist who died?
The skirt wasn’t so bad. It was the spanx they wear underneath that were the problem.
“Spanx”? Whatever those are, they sound far too close to “asphyxiate,” and therefore also a horrible idea.

I’m just scared. Other than Brittany, she’s the one link I have back to the girl I left behind. I wasn’t always this broken, you know? But in some ways, I guess I was, I’ve just gotten so much worse.
It’s okay to be scared, but don’t discredit yourself so much. There are aspects about the person you are today that I’m sure are far more desirable than the girl you “left behind.” And as for your mother, you don’t come across as the type of person who’d let go so easily of something or someone you love. If you’re frightened by the thought of forgetting to call, there’s only one method of avoiding that: keep remembering. Set up little reminder notes around your home or whatever it takes to keep things from slipping your mind.

It’s just hard because…she has no idea what I do. No idea. And she already holds so much resentment for me for running off the way I did, even if she doesn’t say so. And I know that if she knew that I’m…a whore, she’d never look at me the same way, and what if I keep forgetting to call her? What if that becomes a habit and before I know it, I’ve lost her forever?
“Resentment” is a bit of a strong word, isn’t it? Perhaps she harbors a little disappointment here and there, but all of that stems from maternal instinct. Your current occupation may not be... Idealistic, but it’s not like it’s changed who you are. At the end of the day, she’s still your mother and you’re still her daughter. I don’t believe there’s anything that can actually shatter that relation completely.
Realized I forgot to call my mom last week and when I called her today she sounded really upset and disappointed that she didn’t hear from me for a week and now I feel like the world’s worst daughter. Amazing.
People get overwhelmed by their business that they forget certain tasks. It happens all of the time, and that doesn’t make you a horrible person. While your mother might’ve been upset in the moment, I think she understands.
Well, everyone noticed since hers was a mini skirt and mine was a pair of pants. I still say I had the legs to pull it off, but I got called to the principal’s office, nonetheless.
Hah, that definitely sounds like an intriguing experiment. In spite of how you may have looked, I can’t imagine that the skirt was very comfortable to wear.
One time Mads and I exchanged cheer uniforms to see if anyone would notice.
Really? What happened then?
