Marley & Theodore Smythe’s backyard wedding (02/14/2018) @ueslissa
ueslissa:
There was a small part that didn’t like Jade knowing before he knew but that wasn’t the most important thing right now. Jenny was actually inviting him along. She was pregnant, and it was his baby. That’s really all that mattered anymore. “Really?” He asked, slightly surprised at the offer. But he wasn’t going to say thinking to make her change her mind. He was lucky to even get an invitation after what he’d done to her. He nodded, “I’d really like that. Yeah, sure. If you’re okay with it.”
Jenny nodded softly with a small smile. “You should be there.” As much as she knew Hunter deserved to be there for all the steps of her pregnancy, she had to remind herself (and possibly him as well) that this didn’t change anything. She wasn’t getting back together with him just because they were having a baby. This pregnancy, as much of a blessing as it was, didn’t erase what he did and the suffering it brought upon her. But she pushed that to the back of her mind and instead focus on the situation presented to her. “Okay, then I’ll text her and explain. And we should get going before we’re late.”
ueslissa:
Hunter watched her, watched the way she moved, and man did he miss her. He thought briefly of how things used to be when they were just friends, when they hadn’t hurt each other - or rather, when he hadn’t hurt her. He thought about how happy they’d been, and even how in love they were. They hadn’t expected their daughter but she was perfect and he loved their family. But then he became devoted to work and he lost sight of what was important. Here now, seeing her and knowing she wasn’t his, it all was impossible to ignore. A wave washed over him when she spoke and he nodded. They’d had one time together and this is what had come of it. He was quiet a minute and then asked, “Is everything okay with the baby? I mean, is it healthy and… are you okay?”
“Yes, everything’s fine.” Jenny let out a sigh, glad to see he wasn’t freaking out or yelling at her for lying. “I was really scared that I had messed up somehow for taking so long to realize, but...the doctor says it’s a healthy baby.” Talking to him about it felt like such a relief that Jenny was on the verge of crying. The stupid hormones was hitting her harder than the last two times, though it could also be related to the situation they were in. “I was on my way to meet Jade. She was supposed to take me to an appointment.” She paused, eyeing Hunter for a moment. “Would you like to come with me?”
ueslissa:
Her speechlessness told him that he hadn’t been wrong in his assumption. She was pregnant. She was having a baby and didn’t want him to know about it, and that made him think that maybe it wasn’t his. She wouldn’t keep his baby a secret, right? His eyes averted to her stomach and then back up to her face but he didn’t know what to say, or even if he had a right to say anything. So he just cleared his throat and rubbed his hand along the back of his neck. “I’m… sorry, it’s not my place to ask…” Backing away from her, Hunter slowly turned and decided he shouldn’t have come. But before he could leave, he stopped and said, “I know we’re not in the best of places but you didn’t have to keep something like this quiet. We were going through a separation and divorce. I get it if you were with someone else.”
The way he looked at her, examining her, made her fidgety, made her tug her purse closer to her body. But he knew. She didn’t have to hide anymore. She didn’t have to carry that weight anymore. This was her opportunity. Her hand reached out, wanting to stop him from leaving before she could say anything, but he turned around and what he said shook her to the core. She couldn’t believe he thought she had been with someone else. He thought that’s why she kept it a secret. “That’s not... Come inside.” She reached for his arm tugging him inside before she closed the door. "I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t want to see you or talk to you.” Jenny took a deep breath to calm herself, setting her purse on the first piece of furniture she could find to distract herself momentarily. There was no hiding now. Even with the large coat on, the slightest bump was still visible. “I just found out a few weeks ago. I was...in denial for the longest time. It was just easier to assume all the sickness and the tiredness and the weight gain were due to the stress that came with the divorce. But I should have told you the second I found out. I’m sorry.”
ueslissa:
Hunter had barely gotten any work done because all he could do was think about how his daughter talked all about Jenny having been sick. He’d tried to ask her questions but she didn’t have much to say except for a little drawing she made. And that really opened his eyes. He wanted to call but decided to just go by her place. He pretended it was because he had been in the area but really, he wanted to see her. They hadn’t seen each other much at all since the divorce. When the door opened, Hunter stood shocked that the door opened before he even rang the bell. “I…” He held the picture of a teddy bear out to Jenny. “Cece left this at home. It’s for her little brother.” He waited until Jenny took the picture before added, “or sister.”
Jenny was sure she probably looked like a moron. She stared at Hunter. And kept staring, waiting until he spoke. “What?” A surge of fear and nervousness ran over her. She wasn’t ready to see him, not yet. She didn’t prepare anything. When he handed her the paper, all she could do was look at the drawing, her heart twisting in her chest when she heard him say how Cece had been the one to draw it. She could barely believe what she was wearing. He couldn’t know. Not yet. She forced her eyes away from the drawing, looking at Hunter once again. “I...” It wasn’t often she found herself speechless, but she honestly didn’t know what to say.
Jenny was running late. Cece and Connor were already at school and she had made plans with Jade, which included a doctor appointment later in the day. After finally finding her phone hidden away in Connor’s toys, Jenny slid on her shoes and coat, buttoning it up before grabbing her purse. She was on her way out when she opened the door and was faced with none other than her ex-husband standing right outside her door, hand stretched out like he was about to ring the doorbell. “Hunter? What are you doing here?” Jenny moved her purse to cover her stomach, eyes slightly widened as she stared up at him. @ueslissa

Marley & Ruby
Ruby: was always good when it came to action. She didn't think about all the details. She thought about the facts, and it was what she needed more than anything else. If she could figure out fast enough how to react to any given situation, then nothing else mattered. All she thought in that moment was that her sister had been gone for three weeks and got engaged. But this was Marley, and while agreeing to marry someone like that was not like her, her twin rarely did anything without knowing in her heart it was the right thing. So Ruby didn't have to think much about it. "I'm just shocked. I can't.. I mean.. Wait," she took a second to think and then added, "Did Theo ask you to marry him?!" Her sister hadn't said a name but now that the pieces were falling together, Ruby was realizing everything.
Marley: could barely contain her happiness when she heard Ruby say Theo's name. She nodded her head energetically. "Yes!" She nearly squealed, closing her hand over her sister's. "It still feels like a dream. It all happened so fast." Marley wasn't sure if it would ever become real. Maybe once it actually happened, which didn't have a set date yet. "I love him, Ruby. I really do. And I know it seems like we're rushing, but we already wasted too much time."
Marley & Ruby
Ruby: whispered to her little boy, "Aunt Marley had a fling with a Frenchman." Laughing as the baby seemed to ignore what she was saying, Ruby lifted her eyes just in time to see something bright and sparkly in front of her face. She gasped out of surprise, focusing on the ring nestled on her sister's finger. "You're... you.. is-- that?" Shaking her head, Ruby sat on the edge of her chair. Damian had ahold of the bottle so she could reach out and grab her sister's hand. "This is... Did you get... engaged?" She blinked up at Marley. "You didn't leave with a boyfriend. What.. happened?" She asked in shock.
Marley: might have seemed like a maniac, but she couldn't stop giggling like one. Ruby's reaction was priceless. This was the moment she had been waiting for since she got on the plane to come home. "It is!" Propelling herself forward, Marley landed on her knees on the ground in front of Ruby and Damian, close enough to rest her free hand on the little boy's tiny legs. "You're probably really confused. To be honest, I am too. It all happened so fast. I mean, we didn't plan on anything happening, but then it did and at the wedding we kinda just decided to give it a try. And then he just--and why waste time, you know?" Marley was rambling, and probably not making much sense. But she was so stupidly happy and just wanted to share everything with her sister.
Marley & Ruby
Ruby: stuck her tongue out at her sister's comment but couldn't help but feel good being back in the same room with Marley. For as different as they were, they were still twins and it always felt better when they could be around each other. Ruby, however, would never be caught dead at a Smythe wedding. Even though her mother asked her to go and support her new family. Ruby had politely declined and thankfully, she had the excuse of not wanting to travel to France with two five year olds and three babies. But Ruby had long since set her allegiances with the Andersons. She perked a brow at Marley's comment. "Let me guess, you had a torrid love affair with some hot French guy?" She teased.
Marley: let out a small little giggle when Ruby poked her tongue out, reminding her so much of when they were kids. While usually, Ruby was the one doing the teasing, Marley had her moments too now and then. She leaned forward, making funny faces at the little one and blowing him a little kiss before she straightened her spine. She looked at Ruby with slightly wide eyes, trying to look offended by her suggestion. "I most certainly did not. But something did happen." She couldn't say it. It was like her tongue was suddenly made of sandpaper. She was afraid of opening her mouth and start screaming with how excited she was. So instead she just untangled her hands, holding out her left one, fingers wiggling slightly so that Ruby could see it.
Marley & Ruby
Ruby: lowered herself into one of the chairs, a new one that Jace had purchased for her not too long ago. It was fluffy and comfortable, and made late night wake up calls a million times more enjoyable. She turned Damian so that he could see Marley, while keeping him close to her chest. His little fist curled around her necklace, eyeing it curiously. "Too long. I miss my babysitter. I mean sister," she teased. Though they'd long since hired a nanny to help, and when Bianca poked her head into the room to bring a bottle, Ruby thanked her and started to feed her son. They had found a comfortable rhythm. Ruby didn't want Bianca to raise her kids but the help was needed so grabbing bottles or giving baths, or changing dirty diapers helped out a lot. "I'm still surprised you've been in Paris this whole time. I heard the wedding was huge, not that i'm completely surprised. Did you have fun?"
Marley: couldn't stop staring at the little boy in her sister's lap, his wide eyes so curious about the world surrounding him. It made her happy knowing how happy her sister was, even if no one expected her and Jace to have their own not so little family. She crossed one leg over the other, subtly placing one hand over the other. "Ha ha. Funny. You know I don't mind helping the babies deal with you two." She shot right back, laughing lightly. She looked up when a young girl walked in, trying to remember her name. Ruby had told her about the new hire and the girl seemed nice enough to help take care of her nieces and nephews. "It was bigger than you can imagine. You know Quinn and Sebastian, they went all out. But Paris was amazing. You know how long I've wanted to go there. It was really a dream come true." She paused, a smile on her pink glossed lips. "And I sort of have some news to share."
Marley & Ruby
Ruby: opened the door to the nursery and peeked in. While Fox and Selina slept soundly, Damian was kicking his legs and whimpering like the most unhappy little guy ever. "You're going to wake up your brother and sister," she said in a whisper, reaching in to lift up the little boy in her arms. He instantly silenced. "I think you knew your Aunt Marley was here, hmm?" She kissed the top of his head and carried him down the hallway to the living room. "I'm sorry," she said to her twin who sat on the couch. "He seems to be on this different sleep schedule lately. He's up when Fox and Selina are sleeping, and they're up when he's sleeping. Do you want something to drink?"
Marley: was both nervous and excited. She hadn't been home in about three weeks and once she arrived in New York, she went straight to her sister's house rather than going home and tell her mother the news. Once she arrived, a little human being began to cry, cutting off her opportunity to tell her sister right away and get it over with. Instead, she sat on the couch, waiting a moment while telling herself to calm down. She was sure Ruby would be excited. She didn't even know why she was nervous in the first place. Probably because it was so new and exciting she could barely believe it herself. "It's okay. He's worth the wait. I can't believe how big he is. How long was I gone?"
ueslissa:
When she took a step back, Theo suddenly realized how it must sound to her. He’d tried so hard to think of the right way to say what he wanted to tell her but it always ended up so jumbled. But things had always been like that with Theo. He’d never been able to express himself until he sat in front of a piano.. and then when he met her. Marley always understood him even when he was lost understanding himself. “No,” he said. “You don’t see because..” Taking a breath and letting it out slowly, Theo closed the distance that had grown between them. He reached up and brushed a curl behind her ear, his fingertips trailing gently down her strands of hair. “Because if you did, you’d know how scared I am of ruining us.” He swallowed the knot in his throat, then pulled his arm around the small of her back and brought her chest close to his.”You’d know that.. that when I say last night shouldn’t have happened, I mean it shouldn’t have happened before I told you that I love you.” He said it, he realized. He’d actually said it. And once he did, he wanted to say it again. “Because I do, and I know this might mess everything up and you’re the last thing I want to lose but I can’t not say it. I love you.”
Despite the horrible way she was feeling in that moment, Marley didn’t push him away when he stepped forward and closed the space between them again. She didn’t want to hear him, but there was no way out. Not without making a scandal, at least. And she couldn’t do that to Quinn and Sebastian. And then he spoke again and Marley felt like she was trapped in a hypnotic state. She couldn’t believe her ears. She couldn’t believe that everything she wanted to hear, everything she wanted to say was right there. And she couldn’t believe Theo was saying it to her. All the fear she’d been feeling for so long, all the insecurity, it all came down to this moment. Three simple words and everything that worried her just...disappeared. The lump in her throat dissipated. She was frozen in the moment for what felt like forever and then she was moving, her body practically lurching forward until her lips met his. How could she not kiss him after what he just said? Her hands cupped the sides of Theo’s face, keeping him there so she could savor the moment that felt way too short. It would always feel too short. She placed another small peck on his lips before she pulled back, letting out a strangled laugh. “I love you too. I really do. And I thought you--” Her head shook, trying to gather her thoughts. “I thought you were going to say we couldn’t be friends anymore.”
ueslissa:
“No. Please, I..” He cleared his throat and instead of looking away like he was used to doing, he reminded himself what Quinn and Bas had told him. This was Marley. This was his Marley, the Marley that he could always talk to. He couldn’t let this change that, so he looked up at her. “I’ve kind of been going through a million different things about what to say so I.. I do need to talk about it, and I think that there’s a chance it’s going to change everything.. which, frankly, is why I was afraid to talk about it.” Now he was talking in circles. Theo pressed his lips together, took a breath, and then restarted. “Last night shouldn’t have happened,” he said finally, “not the way it did.”
They had practically stopped dancing, Marley’s whole body tense as she waited for Theo to get the words out. It was like he didn’t know where to start and the words were just stumbling out of his mouth. And then he said it. What she expected him to say all along, what she should have told him as well. But that didn’t stop the overwhelmingly crushing feeling she had when he said it. “I see...” Her shoulders slumped when she stopped dancing altogether, immediately removing herself from Theo’s arms and taking a step back. She knew they shouldn’t have crossed that line, but she couldn’t even begin to imagine how much it would hurt to hear Theo say it. She didn’t know he could make her feel the way she did in that moment. It took everything in her power not to start crying in the middle of the dance floor. She just needed to get out of there before it was too late.
ueslissa:
“She is.” Theo said, but it wasn’t what he wanted to say. He wanted to say a million other things, namely that he was sorry he’d left so quickly that morning. He hadn’t known what to say when he woke up in bed with her, arms wrapped snug around her bare body, theirs pressed together from a long night. Then he’d realized the time and he took that as an escape because, like he told his brother, what if she just had a weak moment. What if she hadn’t meant for it to happen? They danced together slowly and Theo looked over at his brother. That’s when he had the realization - if Bas and Quinn could realize that against everything they thought about themselves, they could be brave enough to love each other, he had to be brave enough to face this. “I… wanted to talk to you,” he said, somewhat nervously, “about last night. About what happened between us.”
There it was. The dreaded moment; the dreaded conversation. For a moment, she wished she had a way out, an escape that wouldn’t hurt Theo. Marley tried to suppress her nervousness the best she could. She tried to focus on anything but Theo, her eyes landing on her mom and Weston. They seemed so happy together. Marley had never seen Millie happier. They would never approve of this--whatever this was. Really, it was a losing battle that Marley wasn’t even willing to fight. She didn’t want to ruin her friendship with Theo. Why destroy what they had built for twenty years just for a one night thing? Was it worth it? Marley had to interrupt him before he said anything that neither of them could take back. “You don’t-- We don’t have to talk about it. It was just-- I--” Crap. She was terrible at this.
ueslissa:
Leading Marley onto the floor beneath the soft romantic lights, he sat his hand along the small of her back and held her close as they began to sway together. “It was perfect,” he said softly. “They really put together a beautiful night.” He wanted to ask her how she was but all the words jumbled into a simple, “You look beautiful.”
If they hadn’t slept in in the morning, maybe Marley and Theo had been able to talk about what happened. Instead, Marley never saw him again after he rushed out of the room, already late to meet with his brother for last minute preparations. Marley spent most of the morning alone, going over everything over and over again. It was nearly suffocating and in that moment she needed Ruby. But Ruby wasn’t there, and she didn’t want to bother her mom or Quinn with her own personal issues. And now she was standing in front of him, swaying along with the soft music and she could barely breathe. “They really did. As was expected.” Her lips parted to laugh, but it died out in her throat when she heard him. “Thank you. Quinn made the dress. She’s amazing.”
