Question: What’s the story behind the Avalance pinky promise? Was it intended to become a reoccurring moment/visual between Sara and Ava when it was written, or is that something that happened naturally?

Morgan Faust: It was written into Wet Hot American Bummer when they were preteen girls. That was a part of their like, you know, Ava getting to have a childhood, and the two of them getting to have that sort of first romance as young girls. So, it was written into that, but then I think from there on Jes and Caity just ran with it.

Jes and Caity...

When we talk about the chemistry between Caity and Jes, this is what we’re talking about. The fact that probably 90% of those Avalance scenes were not scripted! Like that was background shit for the most part! And the fact that Caity and Jes have said that the writers don’t write the physicality, they just let them kind of do their own thing. This is where that chemistry comes in! And this is one of the reasons Avalance works so well is because it’s Jes and Caity’s natural reactions of being an onscreen couple. Even with actors who have good chemistry with each other, you don’t often see so much of the cute BACKGROUND scenes. It’s usually played up for when they have lines or are front and center and then it’s like the actors kind of forget they are supposed to be a couple. But not Caity and Jes. I know they said they’ve talked about their romantic scenes and kisses and making sure they both understand the motives and intentions, but I think as time goes by they’ve stopped talking about it with each other as much and they just naturally go for it with each other. Like I bet half the time they don’t even know the camera is on them and they’re just being a cute couple in the back. But it’s not like overly annoying PDA either, it’s just soft and I can’t! I can’t take it!!!! Yall we are blessed to have these two playing Sara and Ava.
