My favourite stuff that T. E. Lawrence has done in the book Seven Pillars of Wisdom so far:

opened with an erotic poem

explained that the title is not just a biblical reference but also his own personal private reference to another book he wrote once but "decided not to publish . . . because he considered it immature"

enumerated at length all the differences between the many different drafts the book has gone through, including one that he lost at a train station, and one 10k word section he cut out because people said it was boring

explained that since determining how to spell Arabic names in the English alphabet is pretty subjective, he has elected to make absolutely no attempt at consistency in how he spells the names of any of the people and cities he talks about

illustrated this point by including a list of inconsistencies his publisher pointed out, next to his flippant responses about how he doesn't care and might just come up with even more different spellings next time you complain (he is not kidding about this, he later does stuff like spell the same name "Feisal" and then "Feysul" a few sentences apart on the same page)

listed the names of like forty fucking guys with absolutely no context for who they are, just as an acknowledgment that they "also did their best" in the war

waxed poetic about gay sex but in a detached way as if he's just reporting what he heard about it second-hand

finally, after all of that, eventually started giving an overview of the geopolitical context of the war the book is allegedly about
