What about the Alpine girl, George suggests, and ah, the familiar thud in Doriane’s chest when someone at Mercedes mentions Abbi. To humor him, she decides, she searches, Abbi Pulling, and to prove a point to herself, she picks the first photo without bothering to search for more—no searching, like George had done, for the best of these photos—and copies it into a document, and prints it out. Of course, this means she will stare at a random press photo of Abbi from her F3 test in 2022 every day for the rest of this terrible exchange summer break work trip, and feel inordinately jealous of her rising success in this cutthroat single-seater world she already begins to regret trying. As she stares at the page as it’s spit from the printer, her heart sinks in her chest, a heavy stone weighing down all the way to her stomach. She hates Abbi Pulling. She hates her success, her speed, her inability to take criticism without turning the critique into an unwarranted compliment. She hates her voice, her accent, the lilt in her tone late at night when she calls. She hates her laugh, boisterous, loud, and jovial. She hates the smile she so often wears on the podium or after an excellent qualifying session. She hates how good she is in a car.
