He tried to hide his excitement; he hadn’t seen Leon in years, and he adored the company of children. No less, he rolled his lips together.
“I’ll watch my mouth.” He hesitated, then, confused by her words. “Oh. You mean Nik. I don’t think he even likes kids, Moni, don’t worry about him comin’ around Leon.”
“Yes, well, I will have words with him later, regardless.”
“Leon? You’re bringing piccolo Leo?” He hesitated. “Dio, Moni, I can’t exactly stop your son from sucking dick, but it isn’t like I’m gonna be like telling him all about it. I know better than that.”
“You’re apparently not coming home with me anytime soon, so yes, he is coming here.”
“And, we will watch our mouths around him, because he is practically a parrot at this age! Tell your boyfriend and everyone else around us, because if my boy picks up one naughty word, I’ll give this entire island the spanking of it’s life!”
His face blanched.
“Well, obviously according to that, I haven’t been charging card!”
“Dio dannato...Leon will be here in a week, Elias. I can tell you now, he will latch onto you. He will look up to you and copy you, because that is what he does. Can I trust him around you?”
A brilliant red blush streaked across his face. Shit.
“Well, what’s EF stand for?” He tried to counter, bouncing in place. “It could mean…Elizabeth…Francesca…or…Or Eric Fish! M-Maybe Eric Fish…Shakes…Da vinci…for free?”
“Maybe Eric Fish does. But that has nothing to do with my little brother s’ing d’s! Raniero Elias Fiore, what have you been up to?!”
Elias froze, trying to think if he’d been there recently.
“It didn’t have anything to do with me, did it?” He whispered, looking at her with wide eyes.
Corine recalled the bit of graffiti she’d had to scrub for an hour before applying fresh paint. A few words, then a phone number--a number that had looked so familiar, she had to double check.
“’EF will S D’s for free’, followed by your cell number.” It didn’t look like her brother’s handwriting, but that didn’t make it any less disturbing. “Now, what could S and D stand for? Shave Dogs? Slap Dads?”
“I found something interesting at the Rosewood, while I was cleaning.”

Ragatha, surprised at how forward she was, glanced to the map the woman had shoved before her. Ragatha peered down at the markings, unable to make sense of any of it. “I don’t understand.” she said simply, pointing at the map. “Thank you” the vikings chuckled and glanced to the map again “sure it is right?”
Clearly this woman was some sort of model. But the sort of model that could beat Corine in an arm-wrestling match. She had a fascinating accent as well, but the brunette decided to wait before asking where she was from. After all, she didn’t even know her name yet.
“They haven’t updated the maps since the island split in half--can you believe it? An island just tearing in two? Anyway, I’m not cartographer, but I’ve been trying to figure it all out and write it down, only...” Only it hardly made sense anymore as Corine had scribbled over so much of the map that it was nearly impossible to decipher.
“I was hoping you were a local, but I guess I’m shit out of luck!”
Ragatha looked up, the sudden noise disturbing her solace. “Lost?” she offered, the word broken and thickly accented.
“Incredibly,” Corine replied, setting down her heavy purse to retrieve the tattered map of the island she’d ‘customized’. “I can’t find the nearest car dealership...you’d think it would be easier! But the map...do you see?” She all but pushed the paper towards the tall blonde, pointing to a jagged black line through the center of the island she’d drawn with a magic marker.
“There was one here, but maybe it fell into the sea? Wow, you’re tall!”
She was too patient with him, he lamented. He didn’t deserve her sweetness, but by God, he was grateful for it.
On the sofa, his knees pulled up to his chest, he took the water with shaking hands. He didn’t move to drink it, as if he’d forgotten what it was for, and instead only ran his finger across the steadily growing condensation around the glass.
“H-He’s a guy, his name’s actually Hnikarr. I met him…at a bar, flirted a bit, got laid, b-but…I mean, it was almost sunset, and he told he he knew some– some things that he shouldn’t have known…” It wasn’t entirely untrue, but he glanced to his sister, too ashamed to speak the relentless truth that beat against the back of his mind. He had to keep that from her, or surely, she wouldn’t love him like this anymore. “A-about Gloria. And he pinned me down, a-and I could…I could see, Moni, there was a change. In his eyes, or something, and his voice. And he wasn’t Nik anymore all of a sudden, he was…a diavolo, called himself Asmodeus.”
“Gesů, Santa Maria, Madre di Dio. You’re telling the truth, aren’t you?” And Gloria...no, no one would have known about this unless they were directly involved or someone in the press that had been paid off. Or, apparently, a demon.
“You’re staying here until we can figure this out, do you understand? Drink.” Perhaps she’d have to find something stronger than water...for now, she’d settle on him ingesting just about anything. Beth. Beth would know what to do. She’d call her in the morning.
“Nothing is going to happen to you, Eli. You’re safe with me. I won’t let this...this bastardo touch you.”
She knew. His shoulders sagged; it didn’t make things any worse, but it was a relief. She believed him – she knew and didn’t need any convincing.
Still, as he hugged her, he swallowed hard. “N-N-Nik’s more than my…well, fuck, he’s not even my boyfriend. That’s a lie. I don’t know what we are, Moni, but h-h-he’s…He has a demon in him, like a big, regular diavolo, and ‘cause I’m half demon he says I have to serve him…” He probably wasn’t making any sense, but his black eyes were intent on his hands, palms numb and trembling slightly. “So I am. But I got in a big fight with Nik, and then I got drunk and I kissed my best friend and…”
“I’m scared of Nik now, Moni, I don’t know what to do.”
There was so much ‘what’ happening that Monica didn’t know where to begin. Now, Monica was well aware that demons existed; after all, angels did, and what were they without their counterparts. But for Elias to be half-demon...for him to be ‘not dating’ one? He wouldn’t lie to her, but maybe he was a little confused. Probably a result of not enough sleep and starvation. He felt so frail in her arms.
“Shhhh, we’ll get through this, caro. Come on, sit down.” She rather forcibly guided him to the comfortable sofa before leaving to retrieve a glass of water. Her heart was beating a mile a minute, but she kept calm. For his sake. “One problem at a time, yes?” Handing him the glass, she curled up next to him, gently rubbing his back the way she did for Leon when he had a tantrum.
“Now, start from the beginning. Who is Nik? How tall is he?” She could probably take him. Monica would, if she had to. Also she sort of wanted to. A scrapper, at heart.
Taking her invitation, his hands wrapped around himself, kneading his knuckles into the flesh of his bicep. Where could he start?
“I don’t even know, Moni,” he whimpered, watching the door shut and speaking only once he was sure no one else would hear. “I don’t know how to say it. I’m in such a bad way.” He could be nothing but honest with her. “I…I don’t know, I don’t know – Papa isn’t my dad. I-I don’t know who is, but…But he was a demon, Moni, you must believe me.”
A demon?
“I know...I mean, I know he isn’t your real papa. Mama told me,” she admitted, wondering if that was what had thrown her little brother into such a tizzy. No, that wouldn’t make sense. She automatically pulled him into a protective hug and kissed his forehead. “You’re upset, Eli. It’ll be alright--you’re still my brother. Everything is going to be okay.”
Wasting no time, his arms flew around her. He couldn’t have called her, should have probably, but he needed his sister’s light, and fast. Her company had always been a better drug than the ones he could swallow. “What episode are you on? I mean, if you’re up for company. I’ve only got maybe an hour before I need to– probably get home, but…I really missed you. Gesu Cristo, I’m stressed.”
“What...what’s wrong, mio fratello?”
“Come in, come in!” She ushered him inside, her relaxed mood dissipating as she read the stress in his expression. Monica had known something was wrong from the minute she saw him, as soon as she got to the island, but knew better than to press the issue. Still, it was killing her. They used to talk about everything.
“No rush, Eli. You can stay here all night. You know that.”
“Moni!” Knocking on her door, he bounced on his heels. He didn’t have but maybe another hour or two before Hnikarr was home, but he wasn’t sure how exactly happy the other would be to Elias having left without explanation. “Moni, bella, open up! Per favore!”
“Hey,” she replied, swinging open the door to her little apartment. With a yawn and a stretch, Monica finally gave her brother a smile. “Was just about to watch another episode of Firefly. Nice timing.”
