“ I don’t know… but I got a message from a couple of your students urging me to come back to the Temple as soon as I could.” He had worried. Worried that they were hurt in some way. So he’d looked at Jack who had sent him off with barely a question or second glance. They were both fond of the Temple in the Mountain, the Omnics there deserved their protection as much as anyone else. Imagine his happiness to find them well, and for their excitement. And here he was… Gabriel purrs softly as he sways slowly with Dhana,” God I have missed you.”

the reminder is painful, the gentle movement even more so ; it stirs something deep within him, and it’s something he could swear he has not felt in decades. 

he wasn’t certain he’d return --- didn’t think he could muster up the strength. and looking back now, oh, what a frightening thought this is ; how soiled and bitter it felt each day to recall this temple, from all the bad things he’d let pile up in his own mind, and to think it’d been enough to sway him from the loves of his life --- how did he ever dare leave them ? 

          “ i have, as well, ” 

but it’s in the past now, and he’s returned from this nightmare.  until he stumbles back. 

          “ please don’t allow me outside ever again. ”

i shouldn’t stay long, i still have so much to do, 

mondatta dismisses these thoughts for as long as his whole frame trembles, as long as he physically cannot remove himself from the warmth of gabriel’s arms. he’ll forget all of this for a moment ; forego his own commands and weep himself dry of all these emotions.  he’ll let all the tears he cannot cry seep silently into the fabric of gabriel’s hoodie. 

          “ how did they know ? ”

mondatta mondaTTA MONDATTA MONDATTA! Cue rapidly approaching Monk, who then throws his entire self at Mondatta to tackle and hug him!

cue outstretched arms and a twirling embrace for the chimera — mondatta almost loses his balance, but he’s certainly strong enough for both of their weights. he’s missed every part of this too.

Gabriel slowly wraps an arm around his waist. Gently pressing a kiss to the diamond of blue lights on his forehead before pressing his forehead to his with a soft laugh," Hey...." A light squeeze. He has missed Mondatta.

and of course, there he would be, following in the steps of those few last monks mondatta had yet to embrace ; it feels strange seeing gabriel here, and it’s mostly because he can’t manage to question it. somehow, it feels right at home. 

          “ i knew we would meet again. ”

it’s with the light press of hands to cup both of his bearded cheeks that mondatta’s voice falters, broken on some kind of smile.or some kind of sob. he’s not sure.

Soldier Headcanons: Omnics

Jack Morrison was canonically a proponent of Omnic rights and during his tenure at Overwatch, attempted to get several Omnic protection acts passed.

After his “death” several of these were repealed, and that’s part of the reason he’s gone rogue- a great many of the people he’s saved just happen to be Omnics. Along with finding out just -who- brought down Overwatch and how deep the corruption ran. 

Every year- he goes to visit the shrine and memorial of Mondatta both in Kings Row, and at the temple- the monks never say anything.

When Zenyatta arrives- he’s one of the first ones to speak with him besides Genji. He also knows several meditiation techniques- but they don’t always work.

Jack Morrison may be a veteran of the Omnic Wars, but any sort of prejudice he has against them is geared more towards the slaving god programs that seek to take free will away from them. There are, of course- those he’s willing to make concessions for.

During his tenure at Overwatch- Mondatta and Strike Commander Morrison were on friendly terms, often exchanging letters and advice. He visited the Temple, when he could. 

On his person, somewhere- is an Iris medallion, next to his mother’s rosary.

it’s like clockwork on the old stone of his sanctuary, the one he’s seen battered in oh so many fever dreams --- he left to forget, but the pictures of it are still stored deep in his databanks ; they tell memories of sweeter times and the cool, crisp air of his early mornings,  their early mornings, they are still chanting somewhere in his mind. 

left, right, left, right, a thud of something heavy, the brown baggage he let fall over the ground, 

they’re at the window, they’re coming for him even after everything, even at such an improbable hour of the night --- oh how he’s longed for these faces, the sight of them makes his core sing.  mondatta’s finally home.
