I am late to this series, but this interaction around how to call each other was really interesting to me.

Tai asks what he should call Kram and the subtitles say "Babe." However, the Thai is "น้อง Kram." It seems like Kram is trying to emphasize the age gap here.

Tai then says that "just Kram is good enough."

However, Kram responds by saying "ไม่น่ารักพี่ Tai ผมอยากรู้สึกแบบตัวเล็กตัวน้อย," essentially saying that "just Kram isn't cute and he wants to feel small and cute."

His body language alongside that comment has him making himself physically smaller. Notice the difference in body language between the beginning and the end of the line.

Tai's response is to say "ไม่เอา Kram เฉยๆดีแล้ว" again saying "I don't want to and just Kram is good."

They then proceed to get into a back and forth about what name to use.

It is then followed up by another scene where Kram asks according to the subtitles "Which Kram do you like more?" However, Kram says, "Kram คนไหนน่ารักกว่า," "Which Kram is cuter?"

After a bit of back and forth, Tai caves and says "น้อง Kram น่ารักกว่า" And Kram has a look of smug satisfaction as a result and asks Kram to say it again. However, Kram's response is "ไม่รู้พูดครั้งเดียว" "I dont' know. I am only saying it once," which by my understanding means that "น้อง Kram" is going to be reserved for special occasions.

Also, as an aside, Kram continues calls Tai "พี่ Tai." Which gets translated as "bro" here and is definitely the wrong vibe.

So a little bit of linguistic negotiation and back and forth that caught my attention. As a caveat, I am not a native Thai speaker by any means, but this bit was at a level I feel confident enough to try and dissect.

My biggest issue with the The Trainee is pro-office printer propaganda.

As someone who has to use an office printer multiple times a day for work, the little demon spawn has sparked many emotions but none of them are positive or wholesome and they're certainly not romantic.

Passing love notes through a printer is false representation in an effort to rebrand the office printer's image and I'm not falling for it.

As someone who makes a lot of copies for work I can agree. There is an ongoing saga of fights that the printer and I have gotten into and the printer always wins.

Thinking about gu and meung. My understanding is that normally these are used by mutual agreement between friends.

I've also seen it used as a weapon: at one point in Bad Buddy I'm pretty sure Pat's dad meungs Pran (Pat's dad also half-wais once in response to Pran's wai). And Li Ming meungs Heart in an early moment of anger in Moonlight Chicken.

But I'm wondering if meung has been defanged among young people in Thailand. If I'm hearing it correctly, in episode 1 of Knock Knock Boys, Thanwa meungs Peak, who has just arrived (at about 17:10), and, unlike Pat's dad or Li Ming, it doesn't seem intended to be hostile. And Peak doesn't react negatively to it either. So the quick usage struck me as odd.

Any thoughts?

Mostly when I'm there I hang out with my bestie's fam and professional peers, workplace, so ... no teens. I've actually never once heard gu/meung used. Ever. By anyone. I mean I've been around plenty of students at events and in malls, but these are public spaces with adults also around. Mostly I'm in Bangkok and sometimes surrounding smaller villages and towns.

Which isn't to say it isn't used just I've simply never heard it.

I think on our screens it's certainly been defanged but I'm not sure about IRL.

This is the point where I remind anyone learning Thai or planning to visit Thailand that guu/mueng is extremely rude and certainly not for non-Thais to use.

I was recently visiting Thailand and part of that included hanging out with friends from high school. I was with different groups and dynamics of friends at different points, and I wasn't always paying attention to all of the different pronouns (or lack there of) that my friends used when talking to each other. But the use of guu/mueng by two of my friends did catch my attention.

To add some context, my friends are both women in their early 30's and very close to each other. They live and work in Bangkok. They used guu/mueng while talking to each other in public spaces, but they were pretty crowded spaces where others would not have been paying attention to our conversations.

(Though I might also run a season 2 of this when gay marriage becomes official official, which is still a couple months out. By then I figure there will be even more proposals lol)
