National Day post: the national anthem of Romania, Deșteaptă-te, române! (Awaken yourself, Romanian!)
Disclaimer: the national anthem of Romania has eleven stanzas, but only 4 of them, the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 11th are sung for important events, so those are the only ones I will show today. Also, the English translation will be my own, as the official one doesn’t really touch the Romanian meaning of the anthem, in my opinion.
Deșteaptă-te, române, din somnul cel de moarte, (Awaken yourself, Romanian, from the sleep of death,)
În care te-adânciră barbarii de tirani! (In which you were sunken in by the barbaric tyrants!)
Acum ori niciodată, croiește-ți altă soarte, (Now or never, make a new fate for yourself,)
La care să se-nchine și cruzii tăi dușmani. (To which even your cruel enemies will bow down.)
Acum ori niciodată să dăm dovezi la lume (Now or never let’s give proof to the world)
Că-n aste mâni mai curge un sânge de roman, (That in these hands still flows a Roman blood,)
Și că-n a noastre piepturi păstrăm cu fală-un nume (And that in your chests we keep with pride a name)
Triumfător în lupte, un nume de Traian! (Triumphal in battles, a name of Trajan!)
Priviți, mărețe umbre, Mihai, Ștefan, Corvine, (Look on, great shadows, Michael, Stephen, Corvinus,)
Româna națiune, ai voștri strănepoți, (The Romanian Nation, your great-grandchildren,)
Cu brațele armate, cu focul vostru-n vine, (With weapons in their arms, with your fire in their veins,)
“Viața-n libertate ori moarte!” strigă toți. (“Life in liberty or death!” shout all.)
Preoți, cu crucea-n frunte căci oastea e creștină, (Priests, leading with the cross because the army is Christian,)
Deviza-i libertate și scopul ei preasfânt. (The motto is liberty and its holy goal.)
Murim mai bine-n luptă, cu glorie deplină, (We better die in battle, with full glory,)
Decât să fim sclavi iarăși în vechiul nost'pământ! (Than to be again slaves in our ancient land!)

what i REALLY want to do is knit my friends chunky wool sweaters in ugly patterns and send them jars of homemade jam and lavender honey and sugar-crusted shortbread wrapped in brown paper tied up with knotted twine and handwrite them letters on thick yellowish paper infused with dried wildflowers i picked and pressed myself but nooooo i have to “study” and “work” so that i can earn ‘‘‘money’’’ and pay ‘‘‘bills’’’. fuck all life.
Forgotten by the world, but not by nature.
picture this
you’re in your late-20’s, early-30’s; you’re married and have two young kids. together, you live in a large house in the countryside. the house could use renovating, but it doesn’t need it.
wildflowers grow all over your large property. bees buzz by, but never sting. they make honey for your family to sell and enjoy.
in your backyard is a garden. you and your spouse wear overalls and bandanas while you harvest the fruits and vegetables you’ve worked so hard on; you sell whatever you don’t eat.
next to the garden is a pasture: you raise cows, bunnies, sheep, and chickens. you’ve taught your children to collect eggs every morning, while you and your spouse milk the cows.
although you have technology, wifi, and service, your family doesn’t rely on it for entertainment and communication. you play board games, read books, and write letters.
your house is your own. you fall asleep in the arms of the person you love, happily content with life.
i honestly believe human beings are not meant to live like this. we are meant to live in loving communities and be around nature every day and grow our own food and create art and not work day and night until we die. this longing for another life is not human nature, it’s a symptom of modern society.
she came up to my bedroom window. i think that both of us were shy.
