Assignment 3 - Overview

Originally I wanted to do more editing on the computer then printing it out and working it by hand. But then I didn’t have a theme and since I enjoy comedy so much I wanted to work on funny themes that would allow other people to enjoy my work. Drawing on inspirations from many of other people's work on YouTube and 9gag that I've seen throughout my years of interaction with social media.

Iteration 1 - Although we are 3 years apart, we’ve always been mixed up as kids. I used to have short hair and at one point of our lives we were the same height and everything. My brother used to have long hair when I came into uni, so his friends would always thought we looked the same. But now that he’s cut his hair and I have my long hair, I wondered if people still think we look alike. As I was creating this face swap, I laughed so hard myself because we actually have very similar facial features!

Iteration 2 - Looking through my photos to edit, I found a series of photo I took of my brother on the beach throwing a sand ball. I immediately thought of him throwing a grenade so I decided to make GIF out of that. There was no actual inspiration for this iteration, it was just how my head thought of funny ideas throughout my years of growing up watching funny animations/cartoons and just random things on the internet.

Iteration 3 - This was my favourite iteration i’ve made. I created a stop motion on something completely random! Stop motion is always something that was intriguing to me, so this was my take on something funny and random. Iteration 4 - This wasn’t very comedy linked but I originally wanted to do a time lapse of UNSW walkway during sunset because that looked really cool for me. But then my camera battery wouldn’t last that long so I just sat there and took a photo every time the sky changed slightly during sunset. As I originally wanted to create a time lapse, I drew inspiration from watching this time lapse of HCMC that my friend posted a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08OpjYn1BlY However, I ended up just creating a GIF.

Iteration 5 - I love playing “spot the difference” since I was a child. Being able to spot the difference FIRST is my personal accomplishment as a child. Yes…i’m very competitive! So I decided to make my own simple game and took a photo of the Quadrangle on campus and edited 13 differences! 

NOTE: I took all my photos with a Canon 60D but when I upload the GIFs onto tumblr, it only allowed me a size limit of 10MB....my GIF files are up to 70MBs...and videos are so much larger so I had to resize everything...They're supposed to be amazing quality GIFs and images!

Assignment 3 - Iteration 5: Spot The Difference [Part 1/3] - Taking The Photo

For this iteration I decided to do Spot The Difference.

For the first part, I walked around campus to find a location that I can photograph and edit. I ended up with the Quadrangle. Above is the photo I photographed with my Canon 60D and will be using for this iteration.

When I was editing I was thinking of hard and easy differences I could create. Taking tips on other spot the difference games to see things I could duplicate, erase, and replace.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 4: Sunset [Part 1/3] - Photographing

We sat and took photographs at the main uni walkway at different intervals as the sun was setting. By setting up a tripod the photos would be exactly the same location and size. It took quite while, we hung out there for about 4 hours.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 4: Sunset [Part 2/3] - Editing

Next step was to sort out the photos and edit them on Photoshop.

Because i'm not the best photographer out there and I don't usually take scenery photographs, i'm not sure which settings work best so trying my way through the Manual setting which i have no idea how to use, I took several photographs by trial and error... Then comes the best bit where I use photoshop to edit my photographs to look better and then cropped them into sections that I needed to make my Sunset images.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 4: Sunset [Part 3/3] - Final Images

Here are my final images for the photos I took of the sunset on the main walkway. I tried different takes on showing the sunsetting through images.

I made 4 images: a GIF, one separating them in column, and two in blocks.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 3: "Magic Shoes" Stop Motion Movie [Part 1/3] - Photographing

Before photographing our stop motion movie. I sat down and wrote the story line with my brother pitching in ideas every now and then - checking to see if it was possible to photograph our imagination.

We took about 2 - 3 hours taking photos. It gradually became easier as we took more and more but it took a bit of getting used to in the beginning. We took over 300 photos at this point.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 3: "Magic Shoes" Stop Motion Movie [Part 2/3] - Editing

I then transferred all the photos into my computer and started to go through them, deleting those I don't need and editing lighting on those I do need. After that I imported all the photos I would use into Final Cut Pro and selected all to be set at 5 frames/second (except some parts which were 4 frames/second).

Then I recorded sound effects that would aid in telling the story in this stop motion movie. I then used 2 songs as soundtrack.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 3: "Magic Shoes" Stop Motion Movie [Part 3/3] - Final Movie

It is my take on turning everyday object into something random and comedic. By using stop motion it already appears less serious and with the help of sound effects and soundtracks, it brings out the characters and moods in each of the scenes.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 2: Explosion [Part 1/4] - Selecting Scene & Photos

For this iteration, I decided to use a series of photos I look of my brother throwing a sand ball he made into the ocean, and create a GIF that would end in an explosion. My imagination made me think that he was throwing a grenade!

To create this GIF, I will be using photoshop to edit the photos used, and adding the explosion onto the last photo for the finale...BOOM!

Assignment 3 - Iteration 2: Explosion [Part2/4] - Editing the Explosion

Part 2 consists of me editing the explosion into the last frame of the GIF.

In the first photo I copied the figure out onto another layer so I could have it above the explosion. I then cut out the explosion in the second photo and feathered the edges so it doesn't look too ridged. In the third photo I've added an outer glow to the explosion; and I've also created a radical gradient and put it in 'soft light' to create the glow further out of the explosion. Then finally adding the shadows to the legs and the figure as the explosion would be brightening the scene.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 2: Explosion [Part3/4] - Creating the GIF

By using Photoshop, I was able to create a GIF.

I had to add all the photos that would be used for the GIF - 10 photos - and created each frame in the timeline. I made each photo visible in each of the frames. And in the last frame I added the explosion that I edited in Part 2. Then at the end, I edited how many seconds each frame would take: every frame being 0.2 seconds except the last frame where I made it 0.5 seconds - to imply an ending to the GIF.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 2: Explosion [Part4/4] - Finished GIF

It looks great and these photographs were taken by my Canon 60D, however tumblr doesn't allow big uploads so I've had to scale down my file size so this version I've uploaded onto tumblr isn't the best quality. It's only 9MB when the actual thing is 24.5MB.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 1: Face Swap [Part 1/4] - Taking The Photo

For my first editing iteration, I chose to do a face swap with my older brother. Here I took our portraits using my Canon 60D.

We lined it up so that our faces would tilt the same amount, and our non-smile will be the same, and that we take the photo standing at the same distance.

Assignment 3 - Iteration 1: Face Swap [Part 2/4] - Editing the Photos

Here, using Photoshop, I've edited all the little marks and scars off our faces so that the photo would be smooth and easier to crop and edit. I've also change the colour of my photo slightly so that our skin colour would be the same as I am more tanned than my brother.
