clothes? check. diaper bag? check. medical records? check. overnight bags? matt had packed their bags for this around a month ago, finding them hidden away in their closet under all the stuff they had bought for their bundle of joy.
the drive to the hospital was calmer than he thought it'd be. he'd called ahead of time so they were able to settle into a room with little to no wait time, letting caiti use his hand as a stress ball during the drive downtown.
their prep room was somewhat spacious- a nice bed with a chair on one side and a bunch of medical shit on the other, as well as an ensuite bathroom and a tv with decent signal. matt helped caiti get settled in, slipping her into a hospital gown and grabbed her some ice chips. "can i get you anything else?" he kissed the words onto her temple.

ah, the joy of having a baby. the pain, agony, and unbearable contractions of having a baby. talk about joyous.
but everything would be worth it the second their babygirl is in caiti and matt's arms. however, there's one problem. she still doesn't have a name.
it took the press of matt's lips to snap her out of her brainfog. "can you just... lay with me?" caiti yawned, leaning into his touch. god, this baby had drained her energy these last few months.
"yeah.. yeah, anything you need." he slipped off his worn out sneakers before pushing himself onto the hospital bed. this was probably against a handful of rules and regulations, but goddammit, if his wife wanted to be held, then held she'd be.
he tucked an arm around her shoulders, the other going to rest on her tummy where their baby was readying itself. "you're doing amazing. i'm so proud of you."
caiti smiled this small smile and shook her head. "pushing out a baby is hard luck, y'know. baby graveson isn't for the weak."
did the fact their fetus still remains unnamed bother her? of course it did. to say she wasn't on the brink of a mental breakdown every five seconds would be a big fat lie.
caiti leaned against matt's shoulder and burried her face in him. "are you nervous at all?" she asked, her voice the soft tone it was when they had first met.
nervous was an understatement. "yeah.. yeah, i am. but she's in good hands here. our girl is gonna be just fine." he kissed the crown of her head.
".. we still need to name her, though." he said after a moment. "any ideas?"
she leaned into the kiss, melting in her husbands arms. at the thought of the three of them, every ounce of happiness washed over her.
that was until matt spoke again. caiti bit her lip and stared at his collar. the uncomfortable and risky pregnancy, constant brain fog, unfortunate timing, and their shared hatred of nearly everyone makes it very hard to pick a name.
that is... there was one name caiti had her heart set on. one that hadn't left her name in ages. however, it felt morally wrong to name your daughter after your best friend (girlfriend?) that you drove to suicide. especially considering her husband knows nothing about it.
caiti swallowed. "are there any names that we haven't thought of?" caiti thought of her list. eden, lizzy, opaline, dottie.
"i feel like we've run through them all." he hummed. "i mean.. she's getting my last name, yeah? so i'll leave her name up to you."
caiti sucked her teeth and closed her eyes. "what about... marenna?" she asked, opening her eyes to meet matt's.
she paused for a long second. "i mean.. there's one more name..."
"i like marenna.." he thought for a moment. it was unusual but pretty. just like caiti. "what's the other name, baby?" he kissed the top of her head, just because he could.
she messed with her fingers, wincing in pain every couple of moments. "uh, i had a friend, best friend, maybe more- that's not the point. we were... close. for a long time. and then she died." caiti sucked in a breath, fighting back tears.
it came in waves. dottie's body would never leave her mind. "her name was dorothea. we... i would call her dottie. and- and i told her one day we'd get out of new jersey and adopt a cat or fish or something together. and if i had a baby... i'd name it after her." she cleared her throat. "dottie took her life about two years ago."
caiti didn't meet matt's eyes. "dorothea. we could call her thea. but there's also marenna."
"Oh, Cai.." Matt pulled her closer, if that was even possible. God, what do you say to something like that? And why had he never heard of this? "We... We can name her Dorothea, sweetheart. I don't mind."
His fingers trailed over her bump once more, memorizing the fleeting feeling. "Thank you for.. for telling me about her." He added quietly.
