Granada, Spain - the home of free tapas and the Alhambra.
Granada is completely different to Madrid. It has marble sidewalks with brass signs on the ground of the the intersections. It has rose bushes and orange trees lining the boulevards and people who maintain the gardens & round a bouts. There is a complete sense of pride in this town and there is no wonder why, as you start to wander through the cobblestone streets entrenched in history and culture.
The Alhambra is 100% worth the visit. Book online to avoid the ridiculous queues that start early in the morning. Then do yourself a favour and grab a map. There are audio guides available but necessarily required - provided you can read English or Spanish. The gardens are immaculately manicured, the buildings are clean and preserved. The only let down is that it’s hard to imagine the vibrancy of some of the buildings. It would be great if there were some pictures of what the original colours may have looked like. Definitely visit and take the time to wander aimlessly through the entire grounds, including the Generalife. It’s also a great idea to go to the other side of the valley to the Mirador de San Nicholas and watch the sunset over the Alhambra, changing the colours as the light fades.
Hidden away in the downtown streets of Granada is St John of God’s Cathedral. Hidden within the hospital (look for this and then walk to the right) the Cathedral is a bland building with a nondescript entrance….nothing at all like the inside!!! The lavish gold cladding on every part of the altar is a definite sight to see. Pay the €1.00 to turn the lights on and see a whole different alter. Make sure to go upstairs (the door to the right of the alter) and walk through the upper level, the 12 brown marble stairs, the silver urn lines with red damask & the collection of framed “items” mounted on the wall are a slightly different take on preserving the history of the Cathedral.
Lastly - and possibly most importantly - it’s is 100% a must to order a drink in a bar. With a drink comes a complimentary tapa dish. A few drinks later and you could just about have yourself a full dinner!! The tapa vary between places and what they have on offer, some serve fresh sardines or fish bites while others serve baked potatoes or Russian salad (aka potato salad with peas & corn). Regardless of where you go, it’s a great way to pub craw your way through town and have a bit of a meal as you go.
