395% increase in crypto job posts

2021 was a great year for crypto for more than just price reasons. Indeed, alongside the increased institutional awareness and integration, perhaps the most impressive trend of the year was the growth in career postings. Crypto job searches on LinkedIn, for example, soared by 395% over the course of the year. This increase far outpaces the overall growth in tech industry jobs, which only grew by 98%. LinkedIn’s news post on this development noted: “while most of the job postings were in software and finance, other industries are also seeing a rise in demand for crypto talent. These include professional services…as well as the staffing and computer hardware sectors.”

Walmart patents show willingness to embrace crypto and metaverse

In the last several months, the retailing giant Walmart has seemingly been developing plans to create its own cryptoasset, launch an NFT collection, and generally enter the metaverse. This is based on the fact that Walmart has filed a number of trademark applications for digital “financial services” and “a digital token of value for use by members on an online community.” They might also be considering selling virtual versions of physical products. Bloomberg called the patent applications “a flurry.” It must be acknowledged, however, that patents do not always lead to actual business plans, and in any case many observers expressed intense skepticism at any kind of ‘digital Walmart.’ Still, Walmart is a massive company, and its moves are worth watching closely.

Crypto price rise driven by US inflation news

The U.S Labor Department published a report on Wednesday, January 12th, showing that the Consumer Price Index, a critical measure of inflation, rose to an annual level of 7% in December. This is the highest inflation rate since the early 1980s. This news, however, was better than many observers expected, and may have boosted the Bitcoin market; around the same time as the Labor report, Bitcoin rose to its highest price in a week and recovered from the bad start to 2022. Indeed, many investors see digital currency as a hedge against rising inflation, as it is an asset separate from traditional fiat currencies.

Kim Kardashian and Floyd Mayweather sued for crypto scam

The two celebrities are being sued for misleading investors about a little-known cryptocurrency called EthereumMax. The class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S District Court for the Central District of California, and it accuses Kim Kardashian and Floyd Mayweather of artificially inflating the price of the token through “false or misleading statements” on social media. EthereumMax “has no connection” to ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value, and the lawsuit claims that this has contributed to the misleading nature of the token. The result of the lawsuit is still uncertain, as Kardashian and Mayweather failed to comment and a spokesperson for EthereumMax dismissed the allegations.

America is the new Bitcoin mining capital

Bitcoin mining, the complicated computing process by which blockchain transactions are verified and new bitcoins are created, has a new geography. Because of its cheap electricity and massive digital cottage industries, China used to be the optimal location for Bitcoin mining. But after all crypto activities were banned in September 2021, the miners had to move elsewhere. In a different Coinhaven piece, we discussed the effect of this on places like Thailand. Another critical change, however, is that the USA has become the world leader of Bitcoin mining. Why? Well, for one America offers a greater level of relative stability, and especially in places like Texas there is plenty of open land and a deregulated power grid. While the effects of this are still evolving, this is a massive shift for the world of crypto.

PayPal soon to launch its own stablecoin

Gradually, PayPal has been moving into the crypto sector, allowing digital transactions for the first time in 2020. And according to a recent statement by Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal’s senior vice president of crypto and digital currencies, the company now wants to create its own stablecoin, or a type of digital currency tied to a stable reserve asset such as the US dollar. He stressed that “we have [not] seen a stablecoin that works well for payments yet,” but insisted “we are exploring a stablecoin; if and when we seek to move forward, we will of course work closely with relevant regulators.”

Over the past year, rumors have circulated that GameStop, the world’s largest video game and gaming merchandise retailer, is attempting to start its own non-fungible token (NFT) project. In large part, these rumors were driven by the reality that GameStop job listings in 2021 indicated an interest in digital engineers, designers, and marketers. And while the company has yet to announce any official NFT scheme, it seems that is likely to do so soon, especially in the wake of Ubisoft’s own NFT launch in December 2021. GameStop’s own NFT platform will likely allow customers to buy, sell and trade NFTs of video game objects and items, but it is too soon to say whether gamers themselves will actually embrace this new digital marketplace.

The rollout of China’s digital yuan recently took one step further, as the pilot of the central bank’s app and wallet was released on Apple and Android stores. The new digital wallet differs from past versions because it is issued directly by the central People’s Bank of China, rather than miscellaneous state-owned commercial banks. The largest state-run media outlet in China, The People’s Daily, reported on the app’s release and noted that only users from ten select cities could participate. The Daily went on to say that the government hopes to execute a fuller rollout in time for the Winter games, which begin on February 4th. Moreover, it called the news a sign of “significant progress,” and that “at present, the digital [yuan] is still in its routine testing stage.”

Back in 2017, the billionaire Thomas Peterffy warned about the dangers of digital currencies in a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal. Now, about 2% to 3% of his $25 billion net worth is in crypto, as a precaution, he claims, in case traditional fiat currencies go “to hell.” Indeed, his firm, Interactive Brokers Group Inc., recently offered customers the opportunity to trade in many digital currencies, after noting an “urgency” among clients to do so. And while Peterffy acknowledges the potential volatility of crypto – saying, “I think it can go to zero, and I think it can go to a million” – he seems convinced that it is a market that can’t be missed. Several months ago, in September, Beijing banned all digital currency mining and trading, stating a concern that crypto was “breeding illegal and criminal activities” and threatened the “economic and financial order.” Accordingly, Chinese miners, which includes some of the globe’s biggest crypto mining operations, have been forced to move to new bases, such as the United States or Russia. But many of the smallest mining operations sold their computer equipment for cheap, and this created the opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs to buy up much of the gear and sell it widely in Thailand. As a result, the Thai crypto mining sector has boomed, fueling a cottage industry of small-time miners. Furthermore, this has accelerated a slew of major investments and crypto interest among wealthy Thais. For all these reasons, the region is definitely worth watching in years to come, especially as other neighboring countries like Laos are also stepping up their digital sectors.

In past years, Russia has sent mixed signals on the crypto industry. Most recently, the Bank of Russia governor, Elvira Nabiullina, announced that the Bank aims to prevent the utilization of crypto amongst local financial institutions, but a different executive confirmed that crypto investment will remain legal in Russia – so long as Russians invest through foreign companies. Ukrainian bank partners with Stellar to test electronic currency

One of the oldest Ukrainian commercial banks, Tascombank, is testing an electronic version of Ukraine’s national fiat currency, the hryvnia, through a partnership with Stellar, a blockchain payment network.
