what if beetlejuice's green stuff on his face isn't mold or moss but green herpes

betelgeuse and lydia throughout the entire musical share a sort of synchronised feeling — the leitmotifs within their songs, their lines and the way they act; theyre sick of being invisible. in lydias case, this is because shes unable to speak up about her feelings, charles wont let her talk about her dead mother let alone mourn. in betelgeuses case, he is quite literally invisible and has lacked any proper social interaction for who knows how long.

the entire time, betelgeuse posesses (pun intended) this flamboyant, clingy and obnoxious demeanor; he makes himself known. even after hes spoken with the maitlands, he stills considers himself invisible. an important thing to note is his temper during these moment of moping — he gets angry, and his mood quickly changes to being more sombre. additionally, as he still considers himself invisible even when the maitlands see him, he always has to be the center of attention. his feeling of invisibility may be seen as metaphorical for the idea that without positive attention, he is invisible — nobody notices the character whom isnt present in the spotlight. his emotional instability (going from obnoxiousness, to anger, to sadness) and attention seeking tendencies are defining traits of borderline personality disorder a.k.a, BPD — a cluster b disorder with symptoms including: impulsivity, emotional instability and doing all in ones ability to avoid abandonment.

upon the mention of abandonment issues, another notable thing to take in about betelgeuse is his temper when it comes to lydia ‘leaving him’ so she can go to the netherworld and find her mother. lydia, having been told about the handbook for the recently deceased, told betelgeuse that she was going to find her mother by getting the maitlands to open the book for her since betelgeuse wouldnt help. within the 5 minutes she was gone, betelgeuse completely lost his temper, devised an evil plan to murder lydias entire family and completely cut the friendship he had formed with lydia. while very exaggerated, this scene alone shows betelgeuses disdain for abandonment, his need for attention and his emotional instability — as prior mentioned, the symptoms of bpd.
