Pharrell Williams
Last year on March 20th, we celebrated the International Day of Happiness with a very special #happyday playlist from the man responsible for one of the happiest songs in music history, Pharrell Williams!
Riding the success of the global hit âHappyâ, Pharrell took his spreading of joy to the next level by partnering with the United Nations Foundation to help spotlight the day that recognizes âthe pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal."
In addition to getting people to post videos of themselves demonstrating happiness on the http://24hoursofhappiness.com website, Pharrell helped raise money for humanitarian efforts around the globe.
Read our interview below.
Youâre working with the UN on this #happyday. Can you tell us a bit more about what youâre doing with them and how you got involved?
I'm so honored that the âHappyâ video has been a part of such a lively reaction. The submissions we get are super moving and super inspiring. Â International Day of Happiness will be one of the coolest things I'll ever be a part of -- we basically just want to spread the notion of happiness, whatever that might mean for you, and of course, any opportunity to shed light on the UN's global efforts is a great one.
Whatâs the last thing that made you feel like a room without a roof?
When the amazing team over at Columbia Records called and said that not only did they want me to join their family but that they wanted me to make whatever solo album I wanted.  All that faith and confidence in my vision⊠in  G  I  R  L⊠that was a happy moment. Â
What is happiness to you?
Happiness is love, happiness is family, happiness is home⊠a day in the sun. I try to never take the simple things for granted.
Youâve had a pretty monumental 12 months. Whatâs in store for the next 12?
I couldâve never anticipated what this past year had in store for me. I just want to continue to share my music and help inspire OTHERs to see the beauty in individuality. Our experiences are what make us unique and diversity is the strength of humanity.
If you could share one song to make someoneâs day a bit happier what would it be and why?
Wow, thatâs a tough one. Probably âOutstandingâ by The Gap Band. Man, that rhythm! The lyrics! They say it all.
Band of Skulls
Taking on the curation of our next âhappyâ playlist on Spotify is British garage rock trio Band Of Skulls.
The band toured extensively since the release of their first album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey in 2009, supporting some of the biggest names in rock including Queens Of The Stone Age, The Black Keys and Red Hot Chili Peppers to name but a few.
Their third studio album Himalayan was released in March 2104.
Here is their happy-themed Spotify playlist:
We caught up with the band to find out more about their playlist, their record and life on the road...
1. You recently released your third album Himalayan. What were your inspirations both for making the record and coming up with the title?
We made this record in London over 2013 so were inspired by city. The title was our setting a gauntlet for ourselves to make an epic record
2. Youâve toured pretty extensively with a lot of amazing bands. Whose been your favorite band to play with and why?
Queens Of The Stoneage as they were the biggest and toughest, and so we had to be good so that they wouldnât beat us up!
3. Where are you happiest, on the road or in the studio?
We like both!
4. Talk us through the songs on your Spotify playlist and why you chose them.
It would take us a long time to go through a collection of 30 songs, but they were all chosen as a collection about happiness.
5. We believe that happiness is better shared; please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who youâd like to share it with?
We would have to chose Hoochie Coochie and share it with our road crew who now all know and love it so well!
6. Lastly, what does happiness look like for you this year?
A smash hit record with Himalayan!

Asher Roth
After a five-year hiatus since his last official album release, followed by a slew of impressive mixtapes, Asher Roth is back with second LPÂ Retrohash.
The albumsâ first singles âTangerine Girlâ and âFast Lifeâ, indicate a seemingly different sound to the now LA based rapperâs debut album Asleep In The Bread Isle, and itâs breakout single âI Love Collegeâ.
His new music, which draws from eclectic array of influences, is perhaps best summed up by the albumâs title, and this playlistâŠ
We asked Asher Roth more about the new album, and what happiness looks like for him this year.
1. Itâs been 5 years since your last official album release. How has your sound developed since Asleep In The Bread Isle?
It's all part of growing up. My interests are different than they were 5 years ago. I've had experiences, conversations and defining moments that have helped me build on the relationship I have with myself. Â All those experiences directly influence the music I make. Â As I grow my music grows.
2. In your video for âFast Lifeâ, you walk around handing out messages to people on the streets of LA. What is the underlying message to your music on the new album?
I'd say the underlying message of 'RetroHash' is freedom.
3. Talk us through the songs on your Spotify playlist and why you chose them.
There's a little bit of everything on there. Songs that hold a special place in my heart and songs that I think evoke happiness. I chose them because of my relationship with music in general. Joints like Sergio Mendes - Magalehna represent a really happy time in my life.
4. We believe that happiness is better shared, please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who youâd like to share it with?
The Zombies â âThis Will Be Our Year' should be shared with all the people who've had my back these last 5 years. Â
5. Lastly, what does happiness look like for you this year?
Man, happiness looks like a clear sky, a good crowd, a cold beverage and an outdoor stage.
Kelis
Our latest âhappinessâ themed artist-curated Spotify playlist is brought to you by none other than R&B superstar Kelis.
A graduate of the world-renowned Le Cordon Bleu school, Kelisâ passion for the culinary arts is definitely at the forefront of her creative outputs. Her most recent endeavours include her own line of cooking sauces, Feast, her own cooking show, Saucy and Sweet, and her sixth studio album, which is simply named Food.
Below is Kelis' Spotify Playlist on the theme of Happiness:
We met with the Harlem-born singer who, as well as telling us about her new record and her specially created selection of songs, let us in on one of her all-time favourite recipes!
1. Itâs been 4 years since your last official LP. Your new record Food feels like a change in direction from your previous material. What were your inspirations for this album?
Every 4 years I come out with an album, so I am right on time when it comes to releasing FOOD. The album is a record I've always wanted to make and naturally the timing felt right.
2. Youâve now got your own cooking show Saucy and Sweet. Â How do you juggle being a musician, mum and chef all at the same time?
For the most part everything comes very naturally as being a mom is my number one priority. And I've always grown up with a mother who had a catering company, so food was always part of my childhood, as well as attending school for the performing arts.
3. Youâre happiest when rustling up which dish?
I love to cook different dishes but sauces are my favorite thing to make.
4. Can you give us a recipe?
Sure. Here's my recipe for Brussels Sprouts, which I love!
Brussel Sprouts:
1 lb sprouts cut in half the long way
3 Tbl spoons coconut oil
1/4 cup chopped shallots
1 Tbl chopped garlic
1/2oz black currants
1/2 oz almond slivers
Pinch of sea salt
Pinch of black ground pepper
Medium fire.
Put your oil in an already hot pan.
Place the sprouts face down, add shallots and garlic.
Salt and pepper, cover for about a minute or two.
Let the faces get golden to dark brown, carmalized slightly.
Add your almonds and currants last.
5. Talk us through the songs on your Spotify playlist and why you chose them.
For the tracks I chose, I mainly listen to music I've grown up with so to me theyâre my personal favorites as well as some newer tracks that I love. Iâll listen to this mix if I'm in the kitchen cooking. I hope you enjoy!
6. We believe that happiness is better shared. Please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who youâd like to share it with and why?
Well, I picked the first track because itâs a song that I really like and so I wanted to start off my mix on a fun / happy note.
7. Lastly, what does happiness look like for you this year?
Happiness for me is my family and friends. Feel very blessed.
Tensnake
Itâs been four years since the club smash record âComa Catâ dominated the airwaves of radios, festivals and parties all over the world. Since then, Marco Niemerski aka Tensnake has been busying himself consistently touring and working on his official debut LP Glow, which was released back in March this year. The album, which embraces Tensnakeâs influences from Pop, R&B and Disco, features a host of special guests including the legendary Nile Rodgers and Madonnaâs super producer Stuart Price.
We spoke with the man himself who kindly put together our latest 'happiness' themed artist curated playlist on Spotify.Â
Read our interview with him below.
1.You recently released your debut album Glow. What were your inspirations for this record?
My key inspirations were the early years of music listening, especially boogie and funk but also 90s r ânâ b. Glow is definitely more rooted in R&B and disco than techno. I produced âFeel Of Loveâ in LA with Stuart Price â AKA the Thin White Duke â which sounds very Prince in a way. The amazing Fiora sings vocals on several of the albumâs key tracks and Jamie Lidell also performs on âFeel Of Loveâ. And as most people now know, I am a big Chic fan and Nile Rodgers plays guitar on âLove Sublimeâ and âGood Enough To Keepâ. In general,  Glow is inspired by my love of black music which you might not recognise on the first listen but on the second listen, people definitely pick up on that.
2. You worked with the legendary Nile Rodgers on the tracks âLove Sublimeâ and âGood Enough To Keepâ, how did that collaboration come about and what was the recording process like with him?
He is such a super-humble nice guy and I am so happy that we did two songs together. Iâve said before, but itâs true: I couldnât believe how grounded he was. I sent him a message on Facebook, and didnât really expect a reply, but he replied himself 20 minutes later and he said he knew my music, that heâd heard âComa Catâ. I sent him the music and he called me and said, âWould you mind if I was just your session musician on this trackâ which really was amazing! And heâs also so entertaining, I could listen to his stories for hours.â
3. You became well known first and foremost for big club records. On Glow, did you consciously want to explore other sounds and styles or did it just naturally happen?
It was a conscious decision. I always wanted to make a home-listening pop album, it was never meant to be a club album. It was about exploring different areas⊠as an artist, you want to develop and I don't want to limit myself.
4. Talk us through the songs on your Spotify playlist and why you chose them.
Here are three of my favourites on the list:
1. Â Boomclap Bachelors - L-O-V-E (Tuff City Kids Remix) - I really like the band and its the Tuff City mix, one half is a good friend if mine, Gerd Janson. Itâs also a timeless tune that will also work in 5 years time!
2. OutKast - Hey Yaâ - I'm a big Outkast fan and this song is super-happy with smart lyrics. Itâs bordering on annoying â but in the end, just about right!
3. Tensnake - Coma Cat - Even now, itâs still making people happy â this song started everything and I owe everything to it. I always see happy faces when I drop it, even nowâŠ
5. We believe that happiness is better shared; please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who youâd like to share it with?
Fleetwood Mac â âEverywhereâ - Itâs a great song and the lyric, âI wanna be with you everywhereâ, thatâs how I feel about my girlfriend! When you are on the road, this is wishful thinking.
6. Lastly, what does happiness look like for you in 2014?
It looks like playing amazing festivals in the summer season, being in the sun and hanging out with my friends!

DJ Cassidy
We couldnât dream of anyone better to create our next artist-curated playlist on Spotify than world-renowned party DJ, DJ Cassidy.
Known as the go-to-DJ for some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, he has performed for the likes of Jay Z, Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to name but a few.
You can listen to his Spotify Playlist here:
We spoke with DJ Cassidy to find out more about the new album and the tracks he selected for our Spotify playlist.
1. Please can you explain the concept behind your forthcoming album Paradise Royale?
With my debut album, Paradise Royale, I set out on a mission to bring the greatest and most universal dance music of all time back to nightlife, back to the airwaves, back to the dance floor. I began deejaying when I was ten years old. It was my dream to play all music, for all people, all over the world. By the time I was eighteen, I was living that motto, performing around the globe, not only at the hottest nightclubs, but at some of the most iconic events of my time, and for some of the most revered cultural leaders of my time.
No matter where I was, no matter who was in front of me, no matter what kind of music those people expected to hear, one sound proved truly universal. Through all my travels and experiences, I grew to view the Soul music of the late 1970s and early 1980s as the greatest and most universal dance music of all time. The classic records of that era make everyone smile and they make everyone move.
Four years ago, I embarked on a journey to bring that infectious sound, spirit, and emotion to young people today. To do so, I united twenty-two legendary musicians of that era with thirteen renowned recordings artists of my generation to create original anthems of celebration.
2. If you were to recommend a classic record from back in the day to introduce your era of inspiration to a new generation, what would it be and why?
I believe the greatest party record ever recorded is Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." There is simply an unexplainable magical quality about this song that makes people of all kinds, shapes, and sizes continuously move and groove to its explosive rhythm and melody. It is the perfect dance record and the perfect symbol of the most universal dance music of all time.
3. Tell us about the songs on your Spotify playlist and why you chose them.
When I began my journey to create my debut album, Paradise Royale, I made a playlist on my computer called "Songs Of Inspiration." I put these songs in chronological order and they all fell between the years of 1978 and 1982. I wanted the songs on my album to capture the sound, feeling, spirit, and emotion of these tracks. Then, I made a list of every musician that played on each of the songs. I noticed that each musician had not only played on more than one of the songs, but had played on at least several. It became very clear the producers and recording artists of the greatest songs of this era were recruiting the same session musicians. These were the architects of the sound, the men behind the music. To achieve my mission, I knew I had to go the source; so over the past four years, I reunited twenty-two of those iconic musicians for the first time in over thirty years to capture their definitive sound with no samples, no covers, no interpolations, no machines.
4. We believe happiness is better when shared. Please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who youâd want to share it with?
I would share Alicia Myers' "I Want To Thank You" with my parents to show my appreciation for my tenth birthday giftâŠtwo turntables and a mixer.
5. Lastly, what are your plans for the year once the album has been released?
When Paradise Royale is released, I plan on traveling the globe, spreading the joy that this music brings to party people around the world.
