Witch Tip
Gather dirt/sand/whatever from places where you feel a lot of good energy or where a lot of people are happy! (I.E. amusement parks, beaches, etc.) this can be use in happiness or good energy spells! Conversely gather dirt/sand from areas with bad energy for cursing!!
đ BELLS IN WITCHCRAFTÂ đ
Bells might just be the earliest form of superstitious practise that I remember. My baba attached three sakura-patterned suzu bells on my schoolbag as a kid, purportedly for good luck and protection from evil spirits â and Japan is far from the only place to have associated bells and bellringing with mystic practise. Theyâve been used worldwide to ward off evil and carry messages â and in a more metaphysical sense, sound is the movement of energy through substance. Sounds have the potential to work powerful magic.
Here are some of the ways Iâve found utilising bells to be helpful to my craft. While Iâm more likely to use traditional suzu type bells, your own background, path and culture will likely have its own types of bells â and as ever, bells can be ornate antiques or they can be a bottle cap in a tin can, as long as theyâre used with intent.
GETTING STARTED
đ As with so much of the craft, if youâre new to the witching bell, itâs a matter of exploration and experimentation. Get a âfeelâ for what works for you and the specific bell youâre using.
đ Itâs good practise to ensure that the bell itself is cleansed, warded and protected â you donât want anything nasty tapping into that power. All witching tools can do as much harm as good, intentional or accidental.
đ A good way to begin incorporating bells into your craft is infuse them into any typical ritual that youâre comfortable with, or even just a prayer or moment of contemplation at your altar if you have one.
đ Give the bell a soft ring while focusing on the energy itâll ripple and move, try to track the movements it creates and what it touches. The tone itâs sending out. The most primal and versatile use of the bell â and what many of the below come down to â is simply another manner of physically channelling energy, giving it shape and direction.
PROTECTION
đ âPassiveâ bells such as windchimes or small bells attached to belongings you donât want disturbed are a starting point. They will scare off some forms of spirit all by themselves, especially if appropriately blessed, charmed or enchanted. Or cursed.
đ Gently tolling can draw energy into a ward or circle you are forming and enforce its protective properties, or for a simple cleanse, letting the sound travel to every corner of the area you are protecting. Itâs a little more âcuttingâ than a smoke or incense cleansing, which I view as more âgentleâ forms of cleansing. Both have their uses.
đ Harder tolling is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful ways in which to enforce a banishing â however, itâs best to you know what youâre doing with the bell before you go bashing it about.
DISCERNMENT
đ Bells can have quite the effect on your perception and awareness. Ringing and then stopping, listening to the silence left in its wake, can bring you new perceptions or make things youâd previously missed obvious. Let it attune your mind and senses to something new, whether thatâs in your thoughts or something with a little more presence. Visualise travelling with the sound, taking heed of the energies it touches and disturbs. Take note of the echoes â youâll learn what they mean with experience.
đ A set of windchimes can let you know if something is passing through or if thereâs some unusual energy afoot â and, yes, it may also just be letting you know that itâs a particularly breezy day, but thatâs witchcraft for you.
CONJURING
đ This can be as simple as calling good energies to witching tools, spell jars, tarot decks, crystals, altars and shrines, your favourite teddy bar, anything at all.
đ With spirit work, it can truly help to magnify your âcallingâ. This can range from gently bringing your latest offering to the attention of your friendly neighbourhood house spirit â all the way to trying to catch the attention of something more. Be mindful, however. As I said, I consider bells pretty powerful tools and a call thatâs too loud is not good spirit work practise for the spirit workerâs own sake. It can really help coax something out of hiding if youâre gentle with it, though.
COMMUNING
đ Some use bells to mark the beginning and end of a ritual, and Iâve read that in Wiccan practise an altar bell can be used to invoke the Goddess, although as a non-Wiccan, Iâll welcome corrections on that if Iâm wrong.
đ In my experience, very simple forms of communication via bell work a lot better than anything too complex â âcome hereâ and âstay awayâ have already been covered, and other than that they can serve as greetings or signals of a start or end of some practise or ritual, the opening or closing of a door, etc.
đ They can also serve as a warning or a litmus test regarding spirits, a signalling of your presence and awareness, lack of fear, or willingness to defend â but be prepared to deal with whatever responses these garner.
BINDING
đ Bindings are where you most often see that famous (clockwise) circular motion of the bell, embodying the meaning of the spell. This can be a simple binding to seal a spell or charm or enchantment, or a spirit-binding.
đ Personally, spirit-binding is something I do as little as possible simply due to my beliefs holding the autonomy of spirits in very high regard. However, sometimes situations arise that call for it, and Iâm aware that not all bindings are unwilling. Far from it â and some spirits are dangerous when unbound.
đ As an animist (believing that all things, including inanimate objects, contain a spirit of their own), I consider gently nudging a spirit back into its physical form a sort of semi-binding, and that can be useful.
Iâll leave you all with a note that I am an urban apartment-dwelling witch through and through, so I understand that we canât all be jangling away at all hours. I myself have a glass windchime in my front window that makes a distinct but muted sound when disturbed by passers-through, and highly recommend wooden ones also. I also only use my small and relatively quiet suzu bell for my crafting â one given to me by my baba herself.
Feel free to add any of your own findings, and happy tolling.
Build-a-spell Basics
So you want to cast a spell to do a certain thing but the Google overlords are letting you down with being unable to find something that fits your exact needs? Well may I suggest weaving your very own spell together to do the thing?Â
It can be daunting to make your own spell, especially if your new or have some idea that everything must follow strict rules.Â
This list can be adapted to fit any type of âCrafting a person might practice. This are not hard rules, bend them in whatever direction you need them to go in order to fit into your situation.Â
What do you want to happen? In your spell book, or online doc, write down what you want this spell to accomplish.
Pick the method of casting to best achieve results. Sigils are great for slow release spells, jars and satchels are best for area of effect spells, jewelry for enchantments, etc.Â
Research. Look online for similar spells, what do others use for theirs? What do you want to change?Â
Decide what you need for your spell. If youâre making a jar spell, gather ingredients that you already have to use in the spell. This means researching different meanings and uses of objects. Raid your spice cabinet, most of whatâs in there fills out a large list of spell types.Â
Keep it simple. Donât over complicate things, the more items you add to a spell the more ways it has of going wrong. And the universe is kinda a dick so there will be things that go wrong.Â
Donât be afraid to ask an object if itâll loan you itâs energy to your spell. If youâve got a glass jellyfish and youâre casting an stinging curse itâs okay to ask it to help you.Â
Create the energy key. You know those words people make you chant 3 times over a glass of whatever? Thatâs an energy key. Itâs focusing your intent + energy and pushing it into the universe path to make it pay attention. Keyâs donât have to be long and complex. If all you want is âThe best mac and cheeseâ make that your key. If haikuâs are more your thing use that. Once the key is made you can use it again and again later because youâre inserting itâs blueprint into the universe at this moment. Sigils are the picture version of an energy key.Â
Craft the object for the spell. Mix your ingredients, draw the sigil, stuff the jars. The ingredients should compliment the energy keyâs purpose in life.
Weave, draw, whisper, or however else your energy key onto the object from step 7.Â
Congrats! Youâve made a spell!Â
Make more, write notes, test results, experiment. And most importantly donât force yourself to fit in a square if you happen to be more octagonal shaped. Meaning, do what feels right not what the internet says is best.Â
Oh, and clean between âcrafting. Types of energy can be stick and you donât want that curse goo messing with luck enchantments.Â
Witchy tips for stress relief
Close your eyes. Breathe out your frustration. Feel your feet on the ground and center yourself with the earth. Keep eyes closed until your heart rate has settled.
Light a lavender candle. Let the scent fill your room/office.Â
Make yourself a cup of chamomile tea.Â
Take time to clean your room/office. A clean physical world translates into peace for your mental world.Â
Keep rose petals in your freezer. When youâre feeling overwhelmed, lay down and place the cold petals over your eyes. Rest for 15 minutes.Â
There is something to be said for the simplicity and effectiveness of writing a list and checking it off as you complete each task. When your mind is cluttered and overwhelmed with all your conflicting responsibilities, sit down, and write a list of everything you need to do. Tackle your first item, then move on to the next. When youâve finished your list you will feel cleansed of your worries.Â
Go for a hike, or a swim in the ocean or lake. Reconnecting with mother nature reminds the soul of the truly important things. It will relax you and allow you to revisit your obligations with fresh eyes.
Take an epsom salt bath.
Allow yourself to be creative. Daily tasks can get daunting and run you down. Allow yourself to indulge in your creativity. Your work will benefit from your brain switching on its creative edge. Doodle. Sing. Dance. Knit. Write.Â
Meditate.Â
Find a sleep spell and encourage yourself to get 8 hours of sleep.Â

Hi there witch friend
In case nobody told you today:
You are a good witch. Your spells do work. You are amazing.
Abandoned in Norway.
Hello Soph! I'm looking for information about energetic/etheral cords between people and all I can find is how to cut them. Is there a way to strengthen those links?
Sure thing! Iâve always imagined these cords as really just ways of conceptualizing the bonds we have between people. If we disconnect mentally/emotionally from a relationship, the bond can become smaller or disappear. If we work on deepening our relationship, it grows stronger.Â
So, knowing this, all you have to do is work on deepening it in typical ways! Share some vulnerable moments (like talking about some deeper stuff), express compassion, act from places of gratitude and giving towards each other, and internally honor and be grateful for this personâs role in your life.Â
Anytime you treat a bond you have with someone with this loving intentionâthe intention to grow itâyouâre fueling it. Thatâs truly all you need!
Help me fundraise for a service dog? I just reached the halfway mark and Iâm almost to my goal! <3
How to be a secret witch tips
If you are practising witchcraft and youâd prefer to keep it a secret there are a few things you can do to make life easier!
⢠keep your semi-permanent altar in a shoe box
⢠have your BOS (book of shadows) in any notebook it doesnât have to be black or have anything witchy on the cover
⢠Make a storage pocket in the back of your BOS for your sigils so no one else will find them laying around and ask about them
⢠if someone asks about incense tell them you were meditating
⢠wear jewellery underneath clothes
⢠if people see you writing in your BOS tell them itâs your diary
⢠take your alter and leave the house and go somewhere private when doing spells or practicing magick
Thanks hope this gave you a few tips! Happy Enchanting ! đâ¨
A great way to create Samhain candles or spell candles.
