Final Post: "Keyword"

Since this is the last post of my HUMN 220 class, I am happy to say that I have learned so much from this class and my knowledge about "space" has definitely expanded!  This class is very thought provoking and gets me to think about things in a different way.  The main key term that I associate most with my space is "private".  My room is definitely the most private space to me and therefore, the most important.  I can be myself in my bedroom and it's something that belongs only to me.  I want to go back to the very beginning of the semester when we visited the Turner Print Museum.  Seeing all of those individual works of art and how they were all different really spoke to me.  I really enjoy the fact that everybody has their own interpretation of something and everyone's thought processes are different.  One reading that we did in class, Foucault, I feel, can relate to how I view my space.  Foucault's essay is basically about the way that spaces interact, for example, open and close.  If my door is open, it is inviting/public, but if my door is closed, it is shut off/private.  Personally, I don't feel like we missed anything in the course; we covered so many works of art and literature related to space! Overall, I think these spatial observation posts made me think harder about space and allowed me to do some critical thinking on my own outside of the classroom.

The reason why I chose the three maps that I chose is because they all stood out to me in some way.  They are all different from each other and different from mine, and I admire their interpretations.  One was a Google Earth search, and gave an aerial view of their space.  Another was a drawing, and for this one, I particularly liked the music notes added in addition to the detail because it shows that its not a still or silent space; there is something actively going on there.  The third space I chose was the third floor of Meriam Library.  I chose this one because I rarely go to the library, to study or otherwise.  I find that I have no need there, but to see someone else pick that as there space lets me see it through their eyes.

This is my space, Chico stadium from an Ariel view. I screen shot this view courtesy of Google Earth, as you can see the picture is a little dated. Notice the lack of green paths in the bottom left hand corner, that is what I can see i do not know of any other dated items maybe you all can find some. I like this picture of the Stadium because the natural light opens up the space and at the same time it casts dark shadows. It also is very linear with the lines around the track, horizontal lines from the bleachers and the lines that make up the game. The overall shape is oval with lines as a pattern compared to the squared off spaces surrounding it.

From Above                                                                                                 For my space I chose to find a map of Chico States’ library. I first was going to use the whole library as my map but then I realized that my focus was mostly on the third floor. My map of the third floor has some boundaries. Being indoors makes me feel so closed off from everything. Although I don’t think daily about this matter I feel like it’s important to realize. My space isn’t as free as I would like it to be. One example would be the shelves being in alphabetical order showing that the library is very organized. I feel like this can represent how restricted a person has to be to live in order to be accepted in society. Also when, in the library you have to “Act” a certain way to fit in. Your behavioral acts are controlled by library rules, causing you to limit yourself. I used all the space on the third floor to show how structured a person’s life can be. To live in a society where everything you do is either limited or confined is at times frustrating. I know to be civil we have to conform to rules but why does it have to be so stressful. My space can have many meanings I just chose to demonstrate it as a place of confinement in our daily lives.

As you may or may not be able to tell from this blurry picture, it is a Google Map search of my apartment and my "place". I chose to do a google map search and take a screenshot of my apartment because it represents how to everyone else it's just another location on a map, but to me, it's probably the most significant place. The direction orientation of my map is exactly what North, South, East, and West really are. I zoomed in to the smallest scale possible because I didn't want to include anything else in my space. I wanted my space to fill up the whole picture.

Post 2 Response

For the Post 2 Response I decided to reblog 3 different audio clips for a specific reason.  I reblogged the audio clips because I thought it would be more interesting for me to hear what others are hearing, rather than have them describe it to me.  When reading a description that somebody else wrote you have to take their word for what it sounds like, but when listening with your own ears, I believe you can truly get a sense of what the other person is hearing and you are able to add your interpretation as well.  Overall, I enjoyed listening to the three posts I reblogged.

By The Creek

I spend a lot of time at the creek on campus. I find the flow of the water beneath the bridge to be very calming. It is nice to have a peaceful little escape between classes where I can just clear my thoughts, enjoy the liquid of the water flowing at its steady pace, and relax my mind enough to forget any problems I might be having. People are not very far from this spot, but their constant chatter seems to be covered by the sound of the creek flow. It is easy to get lost in the peace that seems to overwhelm me when I am here. There is nothing but beauty and solitude in this privately-public space. It is almost as if no one else exists and I am alone just listening to the serene sound of nature take me away.

Serenity in Between

I could hear students unlocking and locking bikes as their classes were winding down.  There were small groups of students having quiet discussion around me.  The occasional car would drive by and I could hear the sound of the tires on the asphalt.  The blaring car horn that disrupted the peaceful serenity around me. As class let out there was a rush of students leaving the building.  The doors were opening and shutting, there were many footsteps from students eager to leave.  The rush of people moving from one place to another almost overpowered the beautiful nature around me.  As the traffic died away and students dissipated, nature once again was the main sound around me.  I could hear birds singing above me and the wind whispering through the tall tree tops.

Second Floor Audio

In my audio recording there is almost no one talking the loudest things in the clip are people shuffling paper, closing/opening their backpacks, and the sounds of the doors from the stairwell and bathrooms. I like that it is quiet but not dead silent. You can cough without fear of disturbing everyone on the floor. The loudest thing in the video was at the end when the person behind me was packing up their belongings to leave. I went into the library originally planning to walk in and walk out but I got to my favorite seat and I sat down and ended up staying there for over an hour. It is so relaxing and the noise level is just right that I sit down and just lose track of time.

Listening Carefully

I've never truly listened to the sounds my room makes and listening with my eyes closed and ears open brings a new sensation to me.  Closing my eyes helped me absorb the sounds better because taking away one sense helped improve the other.  It definitely seemed quieter than I thought it would be.  It's so quiet that I feel like my thoughts are being too loud and I needed to whisper. As I enter and exit my space, my bedroom, throughout the day, different noises come into play at different times.  In the morning, I can hear my roommates' muffled conversation, showers running, and cars starting outside.  In the middle of the day, sounds are almost nonexistent, as people are busy with their own lives and getting things taken care of.  At night, it becomes silent while people are studying, doing homework, or away at work. Randomly throughout the day, I can hear the train on the train tracks. Depending on whether my door is open or not, noises are also different.  An open door allows for more noise to come in and a closed door allows me to have some peace and quiet.  Although the walls in my apartment are quite thin compared to most, my roommates and I aren’t too loud, as we are respectful of each other’s space.  It's 9:00 on a Wednesday night, one roommate is asleep and two are at work, and mainly what I hear is silence, in addition to the quiet whirring noise my fan is making and the occasional car driving by.

Outside Modoc Hall

Just outside of Modoc Hall is this beautiful open space of trees where students can relax and release the tension of classroom behavior restraints.  The setting sun gives the trees a majestic glow and calming atmosphere. This late in the day there aren’t many people around which only makes the space more beautiful and serene.

I completely agree with you I personally think that Modoc Hall has one of the most beautiful lawns on campus.  The sun hits it perfectly and since its on the edge of campus, it tends to be a bit more silent than most buildings.

Fear, Power, Control, and the Prevalence of the Black Sheep

These words describe this space in a way that may not be obvious to most. these words resonate each time I enter and fail to dim out after I exit. A public space, a workspace, and place of leisure all into one. Society has formed it into a deviant heterotopia of sorts however it’s true purpose is a matter of opinion. The Gun Shop

THE WALL

The higher you get, the more difficult the climb becomes. The sole destination peers downward, begging to be conquered. Weak legs and weaker arms work simultaneously until they quit, or reach their ultimate haven of physical completion. Though, the mental reward of accomplishment outshines the pain of the game.

The particular space I chose for this assignment is my bedroom.  It is a small, confined space that represents who I am.  It is a bright and quiet space, two things I admire in a room.  I can be who I want to be in this space and I can escape reality and be alone with my own thoughts.
