When I was a kid my mom came back with this book called "The golden compass". She asked the librarian for a book that was Harry Potter-like. I'm still not certain why that librarian gave my mom Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' but I'm so glad he did. I loved it, devoured it. Even though I wasn't able to understand the deeper meanings of the text I was so hyped by a female, same-age protagonist, charmed by armoured bears and cuts between worlds and I was so fucking scared of this woman. Mrs Coulter was as dreadful as Voldemort to me, if not even worse.

Nowadays I happen to reread it every once in a while, but I still feel melancholic when I think about the pure thrill and enjoyment of the very first, innocent reading.
