While Pollination can feel more natural by virtue of team RWBY being main characters, and therefore having a lot of established bonds, I actually think that team JNPR is uniquely predicated for successfully running a polycule, far above any other team in the show.

Jaune was raised in a large family and is already established as a competent tactician.

Nora is a touch-starved orphan who has MORE than enough energy and attention to juggle this many partners.

Ren is a touch-starved orphan who’s a good mediator, attentive to others physical needs, and probably would love making schedules for fun.

And Pyrrha has experience doing PR, infinite patience, but also just needs people in her life who can let her feel normal SO bad.

Basically, these four would run a household like well oiled machine. They’d be so fucking good at planning dates and living together and making sure everyone is doing well. Dream polycule.

it is wild to me how often and blatantly people are willing to admit to not caring at all about what the show is doing or has to say, they only care about it as far as it's a sandbox they can play toys in

also this is the second time I've seen someone act like Dust just stops being in the show after a certain point - it feels like they're overinflating the importance Dust has both in the show (where it remains a tool to make the 'epic weapons' - which have also not gone away - function) and in its lore

honestly it is so weird to me to not engage with what a story is doing at all, to not engage with any of the characters, but still insist that you 'miss' what you claim it used to be

because i just saw a tweet with someone complaining that volume 8 turned Ironwood into "a Disney villain" when "volume 7 left it up in the air who was right, him or RWB/Y"

my guy, he made it clear he didn't care who he hurt so long as he won before he decided he was going to abandon thousands of civilians to the cold and the Grimm because he got scared and decided to run away when he found out the mean scary witch was coming, and then he shot a child for calling him out on it

there's no ambiguity, there's no "well i dunno maybe he had a point in abandoning the poor to save the rich", the show is flat out clear that he's in the wrong, what are you talking about?

Abandoning your duties to protect a city of civilians from man eating monsters, overthrowing your legal government, and ordering the murder of an innocent woman because she essentially has the car keys you need to run away. These are all things he did before he even knew Salem was coming.

Then, after finding out she was coming, he ordered the arrest of anyone who disagreed with him or who MIGHT disagree with him, and attempted to kill a teenage boy for politely trying to talk him out of it.

James Ironwood was a coward and a traitor before Volume 8. And he was wrong.

Can we all take a minute to appreciate how Penny Polendina bucks the trend of “neurodivergent-coded robot/non-human character who is neurodivergent-coded solely because they are a robot/not human, and it’s only played for comedy”? Like I’m so tired of neurodivergent rep being comic relief non-human characters, but Penny subverts all of that because the source material does everything to make Penny as human and as genuine as possible. I mean, Penny has a literal canonical soul, she has complex relationships with her father, with Ruby, with Winter, her range of emotions, both positive and negative, is vast and is demonstrated thoroughly and effectively in Volume 7…she’s a neurodivergent character that I feel I actually identify with because she’s so genuine and real.

Just think back to Volume 2, right after Ruby sees her stop a truck with her bare hands. Penny begins to panic, she starts to hiccup, she hugs herself, all because she’s scared that Ruby is going find out a deep personal secret. When I first watched this scene, I felt that. I still do upon rewatching it. I would have done the exact same thing. Penny felt isolated, singled out, because of what made her different. I would have tried to close myself off, too. To hold myself just to feel some semblance of comfort in a situation where everything seems to be crumbling around me. That same scene is what made me fall in love with Penny because, even though it’s the scene which reveals she’s not human, she felt so real.

I just love her so much.

Also, if I may add:

So many of those neurodivergent comic-relief characters end up having character arcs about “becoming more human”, which the stories interpret as being neurotypical. That in order to be human you have to be neurotypical, and anyone who isn’t is somehow lesser.

But Penny doesn’t have that story. She gets the opposite of that story.

The show reinforces, time and time again, that just because Penny is different doesn’t mean she’s any less human. That she doesn’t have to learn to be normal, that she’s perfect the way she is.

Penny doesn’t have to become a real girl, she was always a real girl.

when qrow was following and keeping an eye on ruby, he was keeping his distance, killing grimm along the way to make her journey easier. always around, but not close enough to immediately intervene when tyrian attacked.

with amber, it was likely something similar; she was traveling, qrow was keeping an eye on her, likely killing some grimm along the way—while amber was clearly a capable fighter, she was still described as "inexperienced" by qrow—to make whatever journey she was on easier. and just like with ruby, he wasn't close enough to immediately intervene when amber was attacked, this time with a worse outcome.

so like. safe to say qrow's mo when it comes to rescues is that he's generally close by, right? he might be doing something else (like killing grimm) while at it, but whenever he steps in to rescue someone, he has been following them for significant amount of time; he's not one to just "drop in" right on time, wouldn't trust his semblance for that (besides, that's raven's thing).

which is why i honestly think he was following yang when she left with ruby to search for raven as kids since she stepped out of the house. like i have no doubt he was arriving to the cabin (late or not, i imagine he was there to watch the kids while tai was out of the house), flying in as a bird, saw the kids, and decided to see where this goes. he might not have had as many other grimm to deal with along the way—according to him, patch is a perfect place to raise a family, so unlikely it's teeming with grimm—but that just adds to how he was able to act immediately when the grimm crawled out of the broken down house.

and he probably wouldn't have thought much of it either, like. . . he grew up as a bandit. the tribe didn't want him and his semblance around; walking around in the woods was probably normal past time for him. and that was in the wilderness of anima; what's he going to do when he sees his nieces taking a nice stroll in the woods of patch? that's a sunday walk in comparison. no worries, just keep an eye on them just in case.

kinda baffling to me that three years out people are still calling volume 9 a 'filler season', like just make it clear you don't pay any attention to the plot at all

character development isn't filler

lore drops aren't filler

paying off build-ups on character arcs isn't filler

having a season that's lighter on the main narrative to focus on the fallout of an intense arc, and ultimately reiterate and reconstruct the core themes of the show isn't filler

none of it's filler by definition because RWBY isn't an adaptation of anything - filler is specifically added material to pad for time so an adaptation doesn't catch up too quickly

it speaks to an incuriousness and dismissal towards the setting and the characters to dismiss everything volume 9 was doing as filler. this is a character driven show

rwby makes me want to cry so bad. imagine being created with the budget of a nickel and two toothpicks. the map of the region was a stain on a napkin. the creator wrote out to the ninth volume but died before the last of the third volume. but his friends kept the show going, kept true to what he wrote. the show survived the shutdown of the parent company. had crossover movies with wb and was dropped by them as well. got picked up by yet another studio. has been in hiatus hell for 3 years but is confirmed to continue. this is insane and unheard of for this type of show. also the core message of the show is to not give up, to keep going even when the going gets tough, never give up. rwby is not giving up. rwby, monty, you will always be famous <3
