Pyrrha Nikos

I was really excited to draw my design for her. I took inspo from Ancient Greek statues for her. I love Pyrrha and how her ideology and character is cemented in the story but I wish we knew more about her prior to Beacon. Sometimes I’m conflicted about how her character is portrayed in the show but during my rewatch I found new things to appreciate about her

Jaune Arc

Ignore that this one looks a little messy, this is my first time drawing him. I tried to make him look like an awkward teen heartthrob from the 2000s if that makes any sense. I love Jaune and his storyline in the show. I’m also very protective of him (I’ll spare my personal opinions in the main tag)

If RWBY does end Salem's story with death, I don't think it'll be accompanied by the cathartic "HOW CAN THIS BE?!" meltdown a lot of people are probably expecting or wanting. There's not a single character in RWBY still alive that wants Salem dead more than Salem herself. Her core motivations are a combination of unprocessed grief from the loss of her lover (and him siding with the gods that cursed her with immortality after his reincarnation) and wanting to stop being immortal. She wants to summon the gods again because they're so far the only beings she's aware of that can end her suffering. Humanity being ended alongside her isn't her goal, it's just a side effect of the only way she can think of to end her pain.

This isn't subtext, either. The flashback showing her origin story explicitly shows her trying (and failing) to kill herself after she's cursed with immortality and is the only person on the planet for quite a long time.

To be clear, I'm not saying this to try to elicit sympathy for Salem. She is a cartoonishly evil supervillain that literally makes Nihilism Monsters. She is responsible for the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of innocent people in the show and is actively working towards causing The Actual Apocalypse, even if it's not her primary goal. I'm just saying the catharsis of her defeat should not come at the cost of consistent character writing. Killing her would be quite literally giving her what she wants.

Do you not think Salem will end up dead by the end of the show? Because I very much think Salem (and Oz) will get to die and it will be a sigh of relief. I highly doubt Salem will end the series still immortal.

And I think the narrative is pretty sympathetic towards Salem. Sympathy isn't the same as condoning or forgiving someone's actions. RWBY is overall more concerned with helping than punishing so I think Salem will likely get peace by the end. I suppose team RWBY might not actually kill her per se, but facilitate the circumstances that allow her to finally die. That's just a little semantic to me.

Ah ok. We're probably more or less in agreement then. I've just never heard someone assume Salem would have some sort of meltdown when we've been explicitly told she want to die. So I wasn't sure

One of the most bizarre arguments against Cinder's redemption I see is "Cinder doesn't want to be redeemed."

Alright, which villain does?

A villain wanting redemption means they acknowledge their actions as evil, but if they truly see their actions as evil, they wouldn't be in that situation in the first place. It's paradoxical. No villain wants redemption at the start.

For a villain to be redeemed, their worldview needs to be challenged and beaten.

Cinder might have been shaken a few times, but she still believes that absolute power is the only way she can feel safe. For her to be redeemed, that mindset needs to be shattered.

And up til that point, it's pointless to talk about her wanting it or not.

Yang Xiao Long

I didn’t know which design to pick so I chose this one since I haven’t drawn it yet and it’s pretty. I love Yang so much, partially because I relate to her as an older sibling and because I love her storyline. I’m also very defensive over her. I think she’s my favorite RWBY girl to draw because of her hair and how I draw her face shape
