If not, you should definitely get some to give yourself an extra boost at your college and other networking events, such as:

Greek organization weeks

School resource and job fairs

Club meetings

Chancellor dinners

Scholarship receptions

Note: The items with a (*) are absolutely necessary to include on your student business cards. The other items will look very good if you can fit them (without overcrowding) into your design.

College AID: Syllabus

SYLLABUS (siləbəs) n. - an outline or summary of important topics or themes to be covered in an educational course.

High school and college students should be very familiar with a course syllabus as teachers plan their classes, professors their lectures, and TAs their discussion sections around this central schedule-keeper AND YOU SHOULD TOO!

Syllabi (pl.) can typically range from 1 to 10 pages and contain vital information for your success of the class, including...

Course Topics, Themes, and/or Subjects

Purpose, Outcomes, and/or Objectives

Lecture and Discussion Section Days and Hours

Professor/TA Office Hours and Contact Information

Important Dates and Deadlines (i.e. midterms, finals, research papers)

Course Materials (i.e. textbooks, course readers, graphing calculators)

Alternative Resources (i.e. online sites, related programs, tutor)

Grading Scales (i.e. 5% Attendance, 10% Essay, 35% Midterm, 50% Final)

Course Time Frames and Reading Schedule (i.e. different subject taught per week)

Course Policies (i.e. make-up tests, extra credit options)

School Policies (i.e. withdrawal/drop limits, plagiarism, academic integrity)

Be sure to check with your TA as some discussion sections have syllabi with project-specific content separate from the overall lecture content.

It is a best practice to take a minute to review your course syllabi during the first week of class or before (some professors email them out before school starts) so that you may, for example:

clarify any pre-questions you may have (i.e. conflict of office hours with another class)

determine if you want to stay in or drop out of the class (so you have time to try to get into another one if needed), and

log important dates, deadlines, and the like in your academic calendar or planner.

We understand that in response to 50 Cent's embarrassing suggestion for him to read a page of a Harry Potter book for $750,000, Mr. Mayweather posted pictures of his checks totaling over $72 million on Twitter. Students, please understand this: 1) READING (and writing) IS A FUNDAMENTAL SKILL that is needed in every job field (some more than others) because without it, you will be taken advantage of. Course Types: General Education

Hey Students!

Many of you may have started school or are preparing to start school right now. Since we are still in the beginning weeks and you may have the option to opt in or out of our classes, I just want to give you a couple tips on how to choose what classes to take if you are:

1)    an undergraduate freshmen or community college student not sure what you want to major in

- or -

2)    a high school student wanting to boost your GPA and get college credit on your transcripts. 

General Education or GE courses are classes that "give students basic knowledge of a variety of topics" and are usually required in order to graduate. These courses may include:

 English

Mathematics

History

 Life and Physical Sciences

 Language

 Philosophy

 Visual and Performance Arts

College Freshmen:

ASK your academic counselor(s) where you can find your school's list of GE courses that you can take while deciding on what you want to major in. Some courses can overlap as a GE and Prerequisite. For example, Intro to Statistics or Statistical Reasoning may satisfy math, science, and Prerequisite requirements for different majors like Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, and other sciences.

Community College Students:

Most community college courses in the General Education fields are university transferable but ask your academic counselor(s) just to be sure! You may be able to overlap some classes as well for both your GE and Prerequisite requirements.

High School Students:

ASK your high school academic/college counselors or one at your local community college which classes will count as GEs for college as well as double credit in high school. Yes, any class you take at a college will not only count as college credit but as two semesters or one whole year worth of high school credit. So if you are not so keen on art, you only have to take it once at a community college verses taking two semesters at your high school.

One good thing about General Education courses is that they can help shape and guide your interests, which in turn helps you choose a major and/or career path in the future!

Community Post: Top 10 Reasons Young People Should Get Out & Vote

The 2014 Elections are less than 100 days away, so what better way to exercise your civic duty than by voting, and encouraging people to vote.

Students,

If you are 18 years old and older by Tuesday, November 4th, 2014, PLEASE VOTE at the 2014 Midterm Elections! It is extremely important that you take advantage of your right to vote and this article explains why. Check out reason #4 (my favorite) to see how to get paid for voting or time off from school!

You can register to vote online via your Secretary of State's website (California's site is http://registertovote.ca.gov/) or pick up paper Voter Registration Forms at your county election office, post offices, DMVs, public libraries, and other government offices. If you do not know where any of these places are located, GOOGLE THEM!

For middle school and high school students under 18:

You can still participate by volunteering at election polls (must be 16 years to be a Student Poll Worker), spreading the word, or by voting in student mock elections if available in your state. Check your Secretary of State's website to see if they host them. California students can participate in the MyVote California Student Mock Election on October 28th, 2014.
