âFair, but he gave me Bucky during my momâs funeral.â Ari added, âBut fine, Iâll open it. I just want to look at your stuff first.â They reached across the table, then doubled back to nudge the cake towards him, âHelp yourself! There should be some forks in there. Terraâs good like that.âÂ
Their face lit up when they saw what heâd gotten them, âCollen! Youâre the best.â They hugged the books to their chest, âIâve been trying to find these for ages, and Iâll put this gift card to good use.â Bucky needed some new toys anyway. The letter went in their pocket for later, since reading things infront of people was just a weird experience. They skipped over to give their half-brother a tight hug. Eventually they stopped scowling at the black box and cut into the paper with one of their daggers. They couldâve just ripped it, but using their dagger was more satisfying. Inside was a long, blue cardigan made from soft wool that hit their knees. They slipped it on with a small frown, mildly bitter that heâd given them something good, and noticed a silvery tag pinned to the sleeve.
Ari read the tag outloud, ârach Ă fianais?â they tilted their head, âDisappear from si- AH!â They yelped and jumped back. Their body had disappeared from head to toe. Letting out a soft screech, Ari waved their hands frantically around, trying to see themself.Â
âAh! Oh gods, where did I go?!â They stopped and forced themself to process, âWaitâŠI can- shit what was the word for âappearâ? Nochd?â They reappeared, staring down at their hands.
Curling their fingers into their palms, Ari cackled, âOh, I take it all back- This is going to be so much fun.âÂ
"Still from what I know about, his track record of giving presents has been good. I get not always trusting him, but, I doubt heâd give you a bad present.â Collen tells them, âthatâs fair.â He agrees, âThank you!â he opens the cake box, looking at it before turning to Ari. âYouâve had a bite of this right? Birthday person always gets the first one.â
âYouâre welcome! I figured youâd like them, with the library being your safe place and all. I figured that if I was wrong on what books to grab, the Amazon card would help - and if not, well, moneyâs always nice to have.â He tells them, smiling. He hugs them back when they skip over for a hug, smiling. When they pull away, heâs still smiling, and he watches as they open the black box with one of their daggers.
âA cardigan?â He questions, confused for a moment. It didnât seem like a normal present from a god - normally they were cooler than this. But as he notices the silver tag, well, he figures itâs not a normal present at all. Ari reading the tag answers his question, when they disappear from sight.
He listens to Ari freak out wide eyed, not sure what to say to comfort them, until they appear, grinning. âThat is probably the coolest present anyone has ever gotten, Ari.â He tells them, grinning.Â
