She'd been sitting in this bar for almost an hour, sipping a Crown and Coke and watching the comedian on stage fumble to earn even one chuckle out of the crowd. As far as Sonam could tell, the only reason anyone was laughing was because they'd maybe had one cocktail too many. After yet another awkward set up, followed by a punch line that fell flat, she turned to the person at the table next to hers. "Am I just missing the joke?"

ZOSIA SOLOMON.

“Hey, can you do me a huge favor?” Zosia queried, leaning over a little then pointing out at the large St Bernard dog laying under the tree with her back to them. “I will literally pay you anything if you could get her for me. She’s super pissed at me because I wouldn’t give her the bacon out of my sandwich and every time I go to get her she moves away. Please,” she pleaded. “Oh, she’s friendly, just not to me at the moment.”

"Yeah, I'll see what I can do." And hope that the dog was friendly, as the woman had said, because she really wasn't dressed for wrangling an unhappy St. Bernard. "You don't have to pay me anything. Does she have a name?" Sonam moved a few steps toward the pouting dog and lowered herself down on one knee, softly whistling. Her experience with dogs didn't extend far beyond military and police canine officers, but she'd spent her fair share of time with those.

KENDRA HARRIS.

"Oh no, please, take a seat,” Kendra insisted, motioning to the empty end of the booth in front of her with her free hand. She gave the woman a knowing look when she said she had a busy day, far too familiar with those. She chewed through her remaining bite and swallowed, “Usually it would be me with two minutes to breathe down a coffee and pastry, so I know that feeling all too well. Luckily my boss is in an emergency meeting so I’m looking at a good hour to myself — two if I’m really lucky.” She sounded absolutely thrilled at the fact.

A small smirk bloomed on Sonam's lips as she slid into the empty half of the booth, her legs grateful for the rest, no matter how momentary. "I couldn't get so lucky. But I shouldn't complain." She never had before, and didn't see the point in starting now. With her legs crossed, she took a quick bite of her pastry and brushed crumbs off her fingertips. After a few seconds of chewing, she tucked a thick strand of hair behind her ear and nodded at the girl across from her. "What is it that you do?"

KENDRA HARRIS.

“You can sit here if you like, no worries,” Kendra said coolly, digging into her chili cheese fries as she felt a shadow hovering overhead. She knew the diner was packed at this hour, and probably had no more seating space. “I was gonna leave in a bit anyways.”

"You sure? All I have is tea and a pastry, it wouldn't kill me to stand somewhere." She glanced down at the girl digging into her chili cheese fries, weight shifting from one foot to another. She'd been on her feet for hours already, but a little bit longer wouldn't hurt. "And I'll only be here for a few minutes. Busy day."

“I’m not sure who came up with the idea that school was some sort of sort savior for parents, but I’m calling bullshit. Between back to school shopping and attempting to figure out how to find the square root of a fraction, I feel like I’m back in school all over again.”

"They do keep your kids for like seven hours a day, five days a week, though, right?" She propped her elbows on the table-top, arms crossed, and shook her head. "I'm not much help with math... I'm completely useless at it, actually. I'm pretty sure you can just Google the answer, though."

“Wait, wait– wait!” It started low but was building, “don’t step there!” He pointed to the place in the park, looked like freshly dug dirt. “I haven’t put up a barrier yet. Just– don’t step on it.”

She stopped just short of sinking ankle-deep in... dirt? A small frown plucked at her lips. "Thanks. I owe you one." Running shoes were more expensive than they looked. With her morning jog interrupted, Sonam bounced slightly, rising up onto her toes and then back down; a short stretch to work some of the burn out of her leg muscles. "You're digging in the park? Construction?"
