It was NOT a big deal but he's been telling vague stories of it for years now. All of his friends make it seem huge. He is in over his head. He is so scared. His entire reputation is riding on this. They cannot find out.

I think the reason that a lot of us Sokeefe shippers felt underwhelmed by how it actually happened in Stellarlune is because it flipped the “show, don’t tell” guideline that has made Sokeefe so good in the first place. I want to start this off with saying I LOVE that Sokeefe is canon—I’m a huge fan of them, and I have been since I first read the books back in middle school (about seven years ago to be precise). In almost all the books pre-Unlocked (basically 2-8) we are shown signs that there are feelings different from friendship between them; there are countless little moments showcasing the deep bond and connection they have with each other, one that only gets more and more meaningful as the story progresses. However, we are never explicitly told that they have feelings for each other. It’s HEAVILY implied to the point of being canon on Keefe’s side—though no characters ever come out and say it in simple terms, similarly to how Fitz’s feelings were technically ambiguous until Flashback—while on Sophie’s side it’s definitely more subtextual, but absolutely still clear if you know what you’re looking at. And THIS is what makes Sokeefe such an interesting and well-written ship in the first place. We don’t need it to be spelled out how much they care for each other, because it’s shown how much they do. This gives the relationship an extra layer of depth and nuance that (in my opinion) really elevates it above a lot of other ships in the series. However, in Stellarlune, the “show” part of the rule seems to be overtaken by the “tell” part. The book spends a lot of time explicitly mapping out what Sophie is feeling towards Keefe romantically, and consequently removes some of those layers of depth. On one hand, I get it—when you’re writing for a middle grade audience, some things can’t be written as subtley as they could be for an older audience. On the other hand, it kind of feels like in the desire to make it explicitly clear that Sokeefe actually has been built up throughout the whole series, the writing took a downhill turn that ended up cheapening the actual dynamic. Unfortunately, this is a problem that in my opinion started in Unlocked, when we got a dual Keefe and Sophie POV. The fact that we now had confirmation about Keefe’s feelings took away some of the mystery and/or subtlety that made Sokeefe so compelling in the first place. I also understand why Keefe’s POV was done for the purposes of the story, but I believe that it would have been better to keep his perspective and information about his powers more unclear (or at least kept those contained to an extra chapter). As much as I hate to say it, Fitz and Sophie’s confession scene was at the end of the day better written than Keefe and Sophie’s—which truly sucks, because I think sokeefe has the best and most meaningful ship scenes in the series, and their confession scene could have been really amazing. I’m so glad that my childhood ship went canon after so many years, but I’ll admit that I’m a little worried about how their dynamic is going to be portrayed in future works. Hopefully we see a return to something like their dynamic pre-confession (with the added bonus of their feelings finally being out in the open), which I definitely think can be possible with how at ease they were with each other in the chapters after their confession (…and no I don’t want to think about the first chapter of Elysian. We’re not talking about it…😭). All in all, I really love them and I hope that they can be done the justice they deserve, that’s been meticulously set up for them over the series, as it wraps up to a close.
