Summary: Sam is used to hearing the chatter of the birds during his morning run in D.C. -- but today, he hears a secret.

Most people would have said that Sam Wilson’s greatest superpower – if they’d known about it – was talking to birds. It did feel super, a lot of the time. Birds frequently had unusual perspectives and funny stories, and sometimes when Sam didn’t want to be alone with his thoughts he could relax by being together with theirs.
A few nights ago he’d woken up sweating, feeling a cold dread at odds with the fire and desert heat of his nightmares. Well. His memories. Sometimes when that happened, he gave up on sleep, but other times it was enough just to focus on the sleepy early morning chatter of the birds in the tree outside his window. This time, they’d been discussing the merits of different sleeping positions and it had made Sam smile in spite of himself. They didn’t sound all that different from a group of veterans.
The thing was, their chatter never stopped, and it didn’t always make Sam smile. Right now, the pigeons by the base of the park bench were arguing for the hundredth time about how old french fries had to be before they stopped counting as food, and there was a sparrow up above him somewhere that had just freaked out after seeing its own shadow. Sam really didn’t need that cacophony taking up any more space in his brain than it had to, though today was much better than two weeks ago when a flock of shockingly rude Canada geese had settled on the lawn in front of the VA.
So however powerful his gift might be, Sam would argue that his greatest superpower was tuning birds out.
He took a deep breath and settled into his quad stretch, focusing on the way his muscles pulled around his hips and knees; the whisper of fabric against the hairs on his thighs; the grip of his running shoes around his arches and heels. On a long exhale, the world quieted, and he started to run.
He was halfway around the reflecting pool when he heard it.
“Hydra,” a bird said, with enough urgency to push at the edges of Sam’s mental calm. “Hail Hydra.”
He knew it was a bird the same way he always knew. It was something about how it prickled through his neurons. But that was not something he’d ever expected to hear a bird say. Someone without his past clearance or experience might not have even known what it meant; or, if they had, they would have assumed that it was an old bogeyman, a tale of an organization that had died when Captain America flew his plane into the ice in the forties.
But Captain America was alive and fighting aliens. So really, all bets were off.
Sam went looking for the bird.
It turned out to be a crow, perched on the concrete curb of the reflecting pool. The early dawn light highlighted its lush black plumage in pink and gold.
Good morning, crow. You look so glossy in the sunrise, Sam said clearly in his mind to the bird. Crows loved compliments as much as they loved shiny things. He started fishing in his pocket for a coin or a key just in case a bribe was necessary. May I talk to you about Hydra?
The Falcon, another crow said, hopping up to join the first. It had been hidden out of sight below the curb before, but must have been the crow’s conversation partner. You honor us. Sam stopped rummaging with a sigh of relief. He only had his house key with him, and he kind of needed that.
I haven’t heard the name Hydra in a long time, Sam said. Where did you hear it?
From your namesake, the first crow said. A falcon who flies past the windows of the three-walled fortress.
Three-walled fortress. Sam wracked his brain for what building that could mean. It had to be one where top-secret intel might be discussed. The Triskelion, if he had to guess.
Can you tell me anything about how the words Hail Hydra were used? Sam asked, then grinned when the crow cawed excitedly and fluffed its feathers. The only thing that crows loved more than compliments and shiny things was gossip.
Many things, the crow said. There were many men, saying it to each other. One man the falcon knows to be a leader in the fortress, and his flock. They talked of death and insight.
Sam’s blood ran cold. He didn’t know what lay between those lines but he knew it couldn’t be good. He needed to find that falcon, and then he needed to find someone to warn. But who could he trust, if Hydra had a flock within the Triskelion?
By his run the next morning, he’d found the falcon and had his worst suspicions confirmed, but he was no closer to making a plan that didn’t involve opening old doors he’d done a lot of work to close.

“Oh.” Sam couldn’t help but close his eyes for a moment in bliss. There was a lot going on in this mouthful underneath the pistachio flavor. “Is that…” he chewed the cake thoughtfully, letting his brain sort out the component parts. “Rose buttercream? That’s lovely.”
The baker beamed. “You have such a discerning palate,” she said, appreciatively enough that Sam wondered – not for the first time that day – what her clients were usually like.
It was Bucky’s turn to beam. “That’s my fiancé,” he said. “Incredible taste.”
They both had to school their expressions to avoid reacting to the scoff that came through their well-hidden earpieces.
“Really,” Sharon’s voice said. “We’re going to use incredible taste to describe someone who’s engaged to you?”
“If you’re feeling adventurous,” the baker said, “I think you might really like the herbal infusion we do in the buttercream for our key lime cake…” she trailed off, unable to hide her hopeful expression.
“Let’s do it,” Sam said. The baker hustled off to get their next sample.
“Damn that’s good,” Bucky said, immediately loading another forkful of the pistachio cake into his mouth. Sam tried not to let his eyes linger on his lips, or the little peek of tongue that chased down an errant dab of frosting. An undercover date wasn’t a real date.
It made him think about a real date, though. He’d been thinking about that more, lately, the longer he and Bucky worked together, traveled together, lived together. At what point did partners with two bedrooms become partners with a guest bedroom?
“I thought I was sold on the chocolate raspberry,” Bucky continued, “but this one is making me question everything.”
Their earpieces crackled to life again. “Remember you get a flavor per tier,” Joaquín said, “so you don’t have to choose.”
“Do you think we can talk them into four tiers instead of three?” That was Kate.
“Everyone needs to focus,” Yelena interjected in the channel.
“Thank y–” Sam began, but he was premature. Yelena continued.
“They are thinking about pairing key lime with pistachio rose. This is a crime,” she said.
“No, the crime is the money laundering and weapons smuggling that is supposedly happening in the back room of this bakery,” Sam huffed, though he kept his voice down. He looked to Bucky for backup, but he looked in vain. Bucky’s mouth was too full of cake for him to do more than shrug. Sam dropped his voice to a whisper. “Or am I the only one who remembers that we’re undercover and not actually getting married?”
“But if you did, we’d get so much cake,” Yelena said, as if this was the most reasonable argument in the world.
“Maybe five tiers, or even six,” Kate said. “An Avengers wedding is a big deal, we should be going all out.”
The baker returned bearing two slices of fragrant, fluffy key lime cake. Sam smiled at her in thanks but let himself run an assessment again, taking in the mini cupcake pattern on the scarf in her hair, her bright smile, and the smudge of pale pink frosting she hadn’t noticed on her forearm. He supposed it was possible that she was an arms dealer. People had certainly surprised him before. But he was starting to suspect that another explanation for this whole situation was much more likely.
“The pink champagne cake might pair well with the key lime,” Joaquín said.
“If it wouldn’t be too much trouble,” Bucky said to the baker, “Since we’re having a summer wedding, I wonder about the pink champagne cake with the key lime.”
“You’re getting the hang of this,” the baker said, grinning, before bustling away again.
Yeah. There was no way this was an arms dealing op. It was a meddling team members op.
When she was out of earshot, Sam leaned forward. “I think this is a set up,” he said.
Bucky frowned. “We haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary yet,” he said, “and if someone was going to move on us they’ve had every opportunity.”
“No, this is a set up. They–” Sam gestured to his ear, and therefore to the people he was about to call out, “–are setting us up.”
He could see the moment Bucky figured out what he meant. It was like the lightbulb went on in his eyes. Bucky wasn’t really someone who could turn off the tap on his honesty when he had a speaking part, and frequently even when he didn’t.
“On a date,” Bucky said. It was a statement, not a question. And then he sat back and smirked.
“You look way too okay with this,” Sam said suspiciously. “Why do you look so okay with this?”
“I had nothing to do with it,” Bucky said, “but I’m not complaining.” His smirk became a softer smile that did alarming things to Sam’s heart rate.
Sharon’s voice chimed in. “Let the record show I also had nothing to do with this.”
“If you’re going to fall for things that are such an obvious setup,” Joaquín added, “Maybe consider that subconsciously you want it to be a date.”
Sam looked at Bucky. Bucky raised his eyebrows as if to say he has a point and started to lean forward. For a wild second, Sam thought he was about to kiss him right there in the cake shop – which wouldn’t exactly blow their cover but he’d hoped for something more intimate for their first kiss – but before his spiraling mind could hit the stratosphere, Bucky just held out a bite of key lime cake on his fork.
It was Sam’s turn to raise his eyebrows, but he opened his mouth and let Bucky feed him cake like a real, gooey, hopelessly-in-love couple would do. And that was kind of how Bucky was looking at him.
“Might be nice with the pink champagne,” Sam said.
A gasp came through their earpieces. “I can’t believe that worked,” Yelena said.
“If they’re dumb enough not to realize that they’ve been in love for years then they’re dumb enough to—“
Sharon’s voice cut off mid-stream when Bucky reached over and gently removed Sam’s tiny earpiece.

These books are optimized for printing at home and for computer assistive technology. Each purchase comes with a "permission to print" form so you can print the coloring books at home or at a shop for personal use.
