Lori’s appearances to Rick post - death are significant in the stages that they appear in . For Lori visits him at different stages through the unfolding events of season 3 with Woodbury , and so on .
The first time Rick sees Lori , he’s being faced with the decision of keeping Tyreese & co . with them and making them apart of the prison group . After already bringing in a new member ( Michonne ) , then almost losing Maggie and Glenn , but also losing Daryl as a member of the prison , it became too much . In turn , Rick had already decided that he wasn’t going to allow them to stay . His mind made up . Then , he sees her . She’s above , looking down at him , face obscured by darkness , staring , and unmoving . He KNOWS his choice is not a right one , in his mind , it’s not a choice Lori would agree with . These people deserved shelter , Rick of all people would sympathize and understand this , but he refused to offer his hand to them , and in turn , faces inner judgement , judgement that’s disguised by the very first appearance of Lori . His reaction is rage , he just wants her GONE . It’s a very harsh and quick choice . He doesn’t NEED her judgement at this moment , after everything they had just gone through , it was the last thing he needed . The worse part is , he didn’t NEED to see her face , because it was already burned into his mind of HOW she looking at him .
The second time he sees Lori , she’s in the field , wearing the same white dress , but no longer concealed by the darkness of night and the darkness of the overall vibe of the prison . Everything was clear , sunny , and vibrant . He followed her all over and yet at moments she would seemingly disappear . Rick had been out there searching for her through most of the day , to the point that others were watching him just wander , lost , and aloof . He felt GUILT for casting her away , for rejecting the morals she held in life , and the ones she held as a person . He saw her once and wanted nothing more but to see her again . Finally , he finds her . He crosses the fields and onto the small water bridge . She stood there , unafraid of him , with warm and welcoming eyes . Rick nears her and she carcasses his face , in which he melts into . He feels grief of losing her , he feels the time that was lost , and the all the outcomes that could have happened . He wants nothing more but to have her back because he is truly lost without her , someone who he relied on for guidance and reason .
003 : Acceptance & Evolving .
The last time Rick sees Lori is over the catwalk , as the buses from Woodbury pour out people from young children to the elderly . He made that choice because it was the right choice , because others needed help as much as he did . In turn , Rick & co helped the citizens of Woodbury as much as they helped Rick adjust to this New World . He did this choice without judgement , without malice , but with mercy and kindness . Overhead , Lori looks down , dressed NORMALLY , and smiling . It’s a moment of acceptance , in his mind , and approval . It sets in motion a humanity in Rick that is balanced accordingly to his survival side , it also sets in motion Rick’s morality for the rest of the series . This was a sort of an exit for the grief Rick holds for Lori , as well . He misses her dearly , he thinks about her often , but he is not broken from it anymore . His mind has come to it’s conclusion , and it was beginning to make amends so he can move on . Never truly forgetting Lori , but also not allowing her image or the memory of her dictate what needed to be done or not done .
