more thoughts for the pokemon game:

there are six available starter pokemon - all of them are pokemon with the pickup ability! so the starters would be phanpy, teddiursa, aipom, meowth, munchlax and pachirisu

partially because a big theme of the game would be cleaning up litter and building (which requires materials) but also because those specific pokemon feel way more appropriate as 'city pets' than something like a fire breathing salamander

all of them would be locked into not evolving similarly to lgpe, but all their evolutions woupd appear in the core game - including an evolution for pachirisu id like to make

something else i thought would be cute is if the hairstyles available were based off the different starter pokemon

you wouldnt be Forced to match your starter (so you could have a munchlax hairstyle and a pachirisu starter) but it would be an option if you wanted. obviously id like to include variations for different hair textures too

in finnish, the '@' symbol is sometimes referred to as 'kissanhnta' [cat's tail] or 'miau', 'miau merkki' [meow marks]. in the pokemon universe, i thought it might be cute if the '@' symbol were called 'the mew' or 'mew symbol'

considering both bill and professor oak would know about mew, i imagined a conversation in which this term was coined in which professor oak tries (and finally succeeds) at sending his first email.

Roserade

Roserade @ Black Sludge   Ability: Natural Cure   EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe   Bold Nature   IVs: 0 Atk   - Giga Drain   - Sludge Bomb   - Spikes   - Synthesis

Moves: Giga Drain is Roserade’s best grass stab move because it deals a decent amount of damage while recovering Roserade’s HP, making it perfect for a bulky set. Sludge Bomb is a powerful poison stab that covers other grass types and provides super effective coverage against fairy types. Spikes are absolutely amazing in the current metagame and every team usually just gets better if it has them. Synthesis provides consistent recovery for Roserade so that it can last throughout the game. Rest can also be used as it recovers more than Synthesis, but it will force you to switch out to get rid of the sleep that it causes with Natural Cure. Both are good and have their own positives and negatives, it’s really whatever you prefer. 

Spread: Near max HP increases Roserade’s overall bulk, allowing it take far more hits. 16 speed EVs are used to outspeed 44 speed invested Rotom-Washes. 244 EVs are invested into defense, along with a Bold nature, so that Roserade can easily take hits from several physical attackers like fighting types and water types. 0 attack IVs are used to minimize any damage taken from Foul Play and Confusion recoil. Black Sludge provides passive recovery for Roserade, allowing it to shrug off opposing attacks much easier. Natural Cure allows Roserade to shrug off any status that it thrown at it as soon as it switches out. This makes it perfect for throwing in on an expected status move and save the rest of its teammates. 

Team Support/Usage: Roserade finds its niche in being a bulky grass/poison that also has Spike support, making it a good fit on balance and bulky offense teams. Arguably, Ferrothorn does this job better, but the big draw for Roserade is that it isn’t weak to fighting moves. Fire-types, like Heatran, are great partners for Roserade, because Roserade can check water types decently well, and fire types can cover the Steel-types that resist Roserade’s Grass stab and are immune to its Poison Stab. Water-types, like Tapu Fini, are also decent partners because they appreciate Roserade’s ability to deal with opposing bulky water types, and they can deal with opposing fire types.

Bruxish

Bruxish @ Psychium Z   Ability: Strong Jaw   EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe   Jolly Nature   - Psychic Fangs   - Crunch   - Swords Dance   - Aqua Jet

Moves: Psychic Fangs is a powerful psychic stab move that is made even more powerful by Strong Jaw. Crunch provides coverage against bulky psychic types and is also boosted by Strong Jaw. Swords Dance will increase Bruxish’s attack by two stages, making it a very good hole puncher. Aqua Jet is a priority stab move that helps make up for Bruxish’s average speed stat.  

Spread: Max speed stat with a Jolly nature is used because you want to be able to outspeed the crowded base 90 speed tier. Max attack with Strong Jaw allows Bruxish to hit very hard and potentially break some Pokemon that you wouldn’t expect it to. Psychium Z gives Bruxish access to a Z move, which will allow it to easily break through a single Pokemon with an extremely powerful attack. 

Team Support/Usage: Bruxish is a strong wallbreaker/hole puncher that can fit on a variety of teams of anything from balance to hyper offense. Hazards are, of course, appreciated by Bruxish as they can assist in wallbreaking. Bruxish is going to struggle with taking on bulky dark types like Guzzlord and Umbreon, therefore, you will want a powerful fighting type or fairy types like Keldeo and Tapu Koko. Late game cleaners are also important partners as they can finish off the opponents after Bruxish is finished with them. Scarf Tapu Lele is the most prominent among these thanks to the Psychic Terrain it sets up, which will boost the power of Bruxish’s Psychic moves.

Ribombee (OU)

Ribombee @ Focus Sash   Ability: Shield Dust   EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe   Timid Nature   IVs: 0 Atk   - Quiver Dance   - Bug Buzz   - Moonblast   - Hidden Power [Ground]

Moves: Quiver Dance is an insane boosting move that increases Ribombee’s special attack, special defense, and speed by one stage. Bug Buzz is Ribombee’s best bug stab move and can hit relatively hard after a Quiver Dance. Moonblast is Ribombee’s best fairy stab move. Hidden Power Ground is an important coverage move that hits fire and steel types like Heatran that would otherwise resist Ribombee’s stabs. 

Spread: Max speed with a Timid nature is used to maximize speed because Ribombee really doesn’t need the bulk and the speed is fairly nice. Max special attack allows Ribombee to hit as hard as possible without taking anything from speed. Shield Dust, Ribombee’s most viable ability, allows it to avoid the secondary effects of the opponent’s moves. For instance, it will never be frozen by Ice Beam. Focus Sash will allow Ribombee to always live any one attack, as long as Stealth Rocks aren’t present, and swiftly get off a Quiver Dance or revenge kill a foe. Zero attack IVs reduce Foul Play and Confusion damage. 

Team Support/Usage: Ribombee is a decent set-up sweeper that can fit well on most offensive teams that appreciate such. It will require a bit of support, due to its lackluster stats, however. First off, you are going to want a way to clear hazards from your side of the field as Stealth Rocks will really ruin Ribombee’s day. This makes Pokemon like Tapu Fini, Tsareena, and Dhelmise excellent partners. Ribombee will also appreciate hazard support on the other side of the spectrum from Pokemon like Greninja, Landorus-t, Skarmory, Toxapex, or Ferrothorn. This will help break down the opposing team and make it easier for Ribombee to sweep late game. Wallbreakers like Tapu Lele, Mega Metagross, and Greninja make for great partners as well because they can help break through the bulkier Pokemon that can set back the success of Ribombee.

Oranguru (OU)

Oranguru @ Leftovers   Ability: Inner Focus   EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD   Modest Nature   IVs: 0 Atk   - Calm Mind   - Psyshock   - Shadow Ball   - Focus Blast

Moves: Calm Mind is useful boosting move that will increase the special attack and special defense of Oranguru. Psychock is a powerful psychic move that is useful for wallbreaking because it hits on the physical defense and not the special defense, despite being a special attack. Shadow Ball hits opposing bulky Psychic-types who would resist Psychock. Focus Blast hits the Steel-types and the Dark-types who resist and are immune to Psychock, respectively. Nasty Plot can be used over Calm Mind, but I find Calm Mind to be better for setting up on a bulky set-up Pokemon. 

Spread: Max special attack with a Modest nature makes Oranguru a somewhat powerful attacker after a Calm Mind or two. Max hp increases the overall bulk of Oranguru, making it easier to set-up. 0 attack IVs decrease the damage taken from Foul Play and confusion. Leftovers give Oranguru a form of passive recovery, the only kind of recovery it has access to. Inner Focus is the chosen ability because it is the only one that can do anything outside of doubles. 

Team Support/Usage: Oranguru, sadly, falls from grace a bit in singles, thanks to a support movepool that only works well in doubles and a stat spread that leans more to a support role. ITs stat spread and movepool, however, do make for a decent bulky set up sweeper. You are going to want to try to set up on weak special attackers like Toxapex or on forced switches. You really are never going to sweep the opponents with Oranguru because of its lack of recovery, but Oranguru can help break down walls for other Psychic types and punch holes in offense. This makes Pokemon like Mega Metagross and Scarf Tapu Lele decent partners. Oranguru is also going to want to be paired up with a dark check, like Tapu Lele, and a Scizor check, like Heatran, as these Pokemon can easily put a stop to Oranguru.

SOS Battles for Dummies

Why should I chain SOS battles?

1. Some Pokemon (e.g. Mareanie) are only obtainable this way. 2. Increased shiny rate 3. Increased chance of Hidden Abilities 4. Increased chance of high potential Pokemon (maximum of 4 perfect IVs)

…Basically, this is Gen VII’s version of the DexNav

It should go without saying that Legendary and other one-of-a-kind Pokemon (including those you encounter via Island Scan) are unable to be chained.

What do I need?

The first thing you’ll need is a Pokemon to hunt with! This Pokemon will need to learn: 1. False Swipe: for whittling down the first target, and eventually for capturing the goal 2. A status move: no matter what, there will be turns when the wild Pokemon’s cry for help goes unanswered. You’ll need something to do during these turns that won’t knock out the Pokemon

My favourite ‘mon for this is Absol, which can be caught outside of Tapu Village. It can learn False Swipe via TM (tick!), already knows Swords Dance when captured (tick!), and can also learn Thief via TM (with STAB), so you can possibly pick up some rare items while you’re hunting.

You’ll also need some Adrenaline Orbs, which increase the chances of the wild Pokemon calling for help. However if you’re using False Swipe adequately, this step is optional, because once you get the Pokemon down to 1HP it will call for help on most turns even without the orb.

Cool, now what?

1. Choose your target

2. Use False Swipe until it’s down to 1HP

3. Use your Adrenaline Orb

4. Knock out any Pokemon that are called in to help (optional: use Thief to pick up some swag along the way)

5. If there are any turns where help doesn’t arrive, buy time by using your status move

6. Keep an eye on your PP - if you’re running low, the wild Pokemon probably is too. The last thing you want is for it to Struggle and make itself faint. If you’re concerned about your target’s PP, you can “switch” the chain to another Pokemon of the same species and continue on (no need to use another Adrenaline Orb when switching).

Continuing our long standing traditions for the first Pokemon I cover that’s lasted exactly one Gen, after covering my favorite, we look at my starter of choice. Man, the decision between these 3 was the hardest since… well, last Gen. Just like last Gen, I was completely set on the assassin of the starter trio for almost the entirety of the pre-game scene, even after I knew the final stages of all of them for real. And then, out of nowhere, (and also just like last Gen), I decided to switch to the burly starter that a lot of people were hating on for no valid reason. I was also really impressed with its whole theme, so that didn’t hurt its chances at all. Unfortunately, the starters are a bit underwhelming competitively this Gen, but that never stopped me before and won’t be stopping me now. 

#727: Incineroar, the Heel Pokemon! There’s a lot of interesting lore and details around this Pokemon. I’d suggest reading this and this to give you some more context as to why I love this guy so much.

Last Gen, the devs had decided that enough was enough. The regional birds and rodents had been negligible for too many years; 2013 was going to be the year that regional birds and regional rodents (I’m talking about Talonflame and Diggersby if it wasn’t clear) became relevant again. However, regional bugs seemed to get a little left out, I guess technically until Mega Beedrill rolled around but I don’t think that quite counts. Here we are in Gen 7, and the regional bird and rodent are back to being more or less forgettable (competitively, they’re unique and great in their own ways), but here we are with a regional insect that is, all things considered, pretty great. 

#738: Vikavolt, the Stag Beetle Pokemon! Also, a somewhat unrelated piece of advice: never make a really popular post about something you know a lot about, or you’ll have to deal with some… interesting comments on them for months and months longer than you ever wanted to.
