in the young pope, mario assente served as prefect of the congregation for the clergy until the role was later passed on to cardinal dussolier. he was responsible for overseeing matters concerning priests and deacons outside religious orders — which is rather ironic, given that he also handled cases of priests accused of breaking their vow of celibacy. and i can easily imagine him ✨taking advantage of that power, just a little✨.

I find assentes role as cardinal so interesting because he obviously must believe in god, and he must come with at least some sort of status having grown up in sienna and being able to get into his position, and while cardinals break rules all the time they still must beof a higher standard of holiness than most people

But he still ends up relocated, he breaks the strict code on relations, he says he detests orphans, and generally seems to like his job mostly for what it brings him

I dont think hes as shallow as he portrays himself to bo though, and we know he’s not as unshakable as he says he is

So ive come to the conclusion that his rule breaking, even outside of his obvious breach of code when it comes to relationships, come from his loneliness. Down to the behavior i mentioned earlier. Its obvious that he’s extremely repressed (again hes a cardinal, how many of them arent) and that his bad behavior and bitchy habits are shields from the vulnerability hes repressing
