Special Look: Jen Kirkman
We can’t be more pleased to have one of our all-time favorite comics to kick off Special Look, a Comedy Stylings exclusive where we get the details on what comedians choose to wear for their comedy specials. Jen Kirkman gave us the scoop on what she wore in I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine) currently streaming on Netflix.
Top: brand unknown via Piperlime.com Pants: Rag & Bone via Piperlime.com Shoes: United Nude from Shoe Be Do in New Orleans Statement necklace: Anthropologie in LA Smaller necklace: unknown brand/source Ring: Loehmann's in LA Cuffs: Made by a fan Faux fur coat: From Etsy, 40th birthday gift from manager
Was this already a favorite outfit of yours?
It wasn’t a favorite outfit and I was in between weights. I had just lived in NYC for 2 months during the holidays so I had only 2 weeks before I taped the special to try to drop a few from all of the eating and drinking I had done.
Was it an outfit you had performed a lot in and felt comfortable in?
I had never performed in that outfit before but I felt pretty comfy – the shirt was taped to me so it didn’t billow open.
Did you have to find new pieces to create the perfect look?
The shirt was brand new. The shoes I already had but thought they would look cool on the stage. The pants I had – and they were the only ones that worked for the special because they were tight and didn’t have a sheen or shine. I wasn’t allowed to wear leather for some kind of camera reason. I was really sad about that.
Did you already know that you wanted that color palette?
The background colors were picked and I approved them and then after that I found out that certain colors wouldn’t work with it. I was told not to wear red. I really hate having to pick an outfit because cameras really do add weight and cause certain patterns or materials to look weird. Ultimately I would want to wear black leather pants, huge black boots and a small black tee shirt but all black was also a no no per the set designer and director. I had a button down sleeveless black top that I like to wear unbuttoned low but that all black thing again....couldn’t. To be honest, my mind was so not focused on my outfit which sounds odd because I love fashion. But I love real life fashion choices – not “have to pick an outfit for the camera” fashion choices.
