i love when characters don't get to die

this is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done. especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. like yes motherfucker there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. you get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. you get to try to make amends and do good. you get to live.

this is also about every self-sacrificial bastard of a protagonist who puts themselves in harm's way again and again and again to a wildly unhealthy and unnecessary degree. see, there's something so compelling to me in the unspoken suicidality of repeated heroic self-sacrifice, and the thing about implicitly suicidal characters is that i want them to live. and that can be used to make a death so much more tragic and impactful - noble sacrifices and last stands certainly can and have been done beautifully - but there's also something special to me in seeing such a character make it. because you'd die for the people you love, yes, but would you live for them?

The problem with deciding on Lustre's god after I've already designed them means I'm already tired of finangling w/their design sheet, but now have other things to add. Which I kind of knew would happen, but. bruh.

For example, adding more patchwork of colors and changing their coat color (or perhaps making it patchwork as well) but THEN. CONVERSELY. I've been playing around in my head w/the concept that their god is no longer recognized/honored, and they're being a biiiit more subtle abt their worship so as to not cause public trouble. So them being dressed more simply, akin to a 'typical' priest aligns to this.

...but also, if they're god is a minor one of Joy and Celebration, what happened there.

Lustre wearing predominantly black bc they are more of a combat medic than most of their Lliiran peers, traveling with the bards who bang wardrums and keep spirits high. Hmmm.

So, in the fun facts section of that character sheet, I say Lustre's functionally a vegetarian? It's because of a... not religious restriction per se. Religious guideline maybe.

I still need to settle on their God's whole deal, what exactly it's a god of, things like that. But presently I have it in mind that the tenets include respecting life, the living, that it is NOT taken lightly to kill any one being. Not that it is unforgivable, but very close, especially regarding the death of other people.

There's a little more leeway with animals by way of understanding the circle of life and the necessity of something dying so another thing lives, but you still don't take the lives of those creatures lightly either as they sustain you; say your prayers and use everything you can from what you hunt. Disciples and clerics of this god mostly abstain from eating meat when they can as an extreme form of this reverence of life, with the exception of like high holy days where its consumption (and other usages of the carcasses a la creation of leather or bone tools etc) is a ritualistic practice.

All this said, Lustre will always pick a vegetarian option, and then pray over their meal when/if no option is given and they are served meat anyways (if unable to spare a life, it's more disrespectful to deny the sustenance given if it'd benefit you than to. leave it alone entirely.)

"came back wrong" what about Came Back Afraid. You used to be brave. Too brave maybe, defying the odds at every turn, a fighter, cocky, playing with fire, first to throw yourself at the enemy. Until one day it all caught up to you. You came back, somehow, but now you know all too intimately how it feels to lose, to die, to be destroyed. Now you flinch and freeze and cower at the slightest provocation. Who even are you now if you can't be brave? The grave may have let you go, but the mortal fear still grips you tighter than ever.

Hiiii I made a character sheet template! I combined a couple elements from some other sheets I like (This sheet by cparrisart, This sheet by Kogoyun, This sheet by bitegore) plus a bunch of stuff I haven't seen on a template but I thought would be fun. My spouse @benjamindisco type set it for me cause they're an angel.
