We don’t talk enough about “The Beach” in terms of Azula (long essay) 

Okay so, I have not stopped thinking about this episode and how it reveals Azula’s entire self image and how it foreshadows her breakdown. So here’s a deep dive: 

We start the episode off with this premise: for the first time in the series we get to see Azula as a normal teenager. We’ve seen her in combat, we’ve seen her as a political force to be reckoned with, and we’ve seen her within her messed-up family. But in this episode we’re seeing her on vacation. From the beginning of the episode, we think that it’s going to be Zuko on edge (”doing nothing is a waste of time, we’re being sent away on a forced vacation”) and Azula enjoying her time off (”lighten up, so dad wants to meet with his advisors alone, without anyone else around. Don’t take it so personally”). But that doesn’t exactly happen. While by no means does Zuko have an easy time on their ‘forced vacation,’ the episode reveals Azula’s weakness and hidden insecurities and foreshadows her breakdown in the series finale.

I hate to break it to the white people who are all “wow I can’t believe there’s still racism in hockey. That’s bad” in response to Akim Aliu’s Players Tribune article, but there’s visibly been racism in the NHL the entire time, you’ve just been privileged enough to not notice it

To elaborate on this: how many minority NHL players can you name? Is there a minority player on your favorite team? 

Look at everything that white men in hockey media (especially Don Cherry) have said about PK Subban and how he gets criticized more than any white player. Pay attention to the fact that he gets boo’d far more often in random away games because the fans “don’t like him, but it has nothing to do with his race”

Look at how young black men like Josh Ho-Sang and Anthony Duclair get labeled as having “attitude problems” as a justification for why they aren’t getting chances in the NHL

Auston Matthews got chosen every single time the Leafs got “randomly” drug tested his rookie year

JT Brown received death threats when he silently raised his fist to protest police brutality while standing on the bench for the anthem 

K’Andre Miller’s zoom call got hacked and the chat was spammed with the n-word. Hawks fans were removed from a game for racially taunting Devante Smith-Pelly

The Chicago Blackhawks, a team with a racist caricature as their logo, still exists in the league and the players routinely vote it as the best logo/jersey in the league

The NHL, and hockey as a whole, is racist, it’s been racist, and while what happened to Akim Aliu is horrifying and an extreme example of the racism in hockey, we’ve known the entire time that racism is prominent here. If you haven’t noticed that, you’re willfully ignorant of the constant racism that occurs within this sport
