as much as apo sparing shelby in the finale during their bat fight is a really compelling story beat, someone getting staked mid-air is metal as fuck and I think we could think about a world where apo did kill shelby there. permanently.

it’s the fact that Apo killing Shelby would be entirely justified. it’s the fact that Shelby was going to kill the humans and Apo was going to to defend them. It’s the fact that Apo never strikes first. It’s the fact that Apo has reached out to Shelby over and over and over again and been denied. It’s the fact that Shelby believes none of the townsfolk care for her. It’s the fact that Apo knows just how little she matters to them.

It’s the fact that Apo killing Shelby would be justified, and the fact that it’s Shelby who’d be wept for.

Vsmp Pearl and Apo is actually such a duo that never happened because no one in Oakhurst actually knew a single thing about Apo. They knew she had a lover but didn't know a single thing about Cherri, while Apo recognized Cleo's care for Pearl and Pearl calling Cleo her "roomie to death" and definitely related to that.

I've also talked previously about similarities between Apo's and Pearl's turning, which yet again went unnoticed because no one knew anything about Apo.

And the recent @vampostingtime post about Cleo and Pearl having arguments made me think about how having information about Apo would've made the arguments worse.

For a while I had a fic idea of Apo sending letters inviting Pearl, Cleo, Abolish and maybe Sausage to her and Cherri's funeral because she wanted at least someone present at the event and at least someone to know about their grave. (And also it's a coward's way out of talking about Oakhurst - you don't have to address what happened to the others if you're already dead. Also I have not written a single word of the fic dw about it).

And imagine Pearl and Cleo learning that Apo never turned Cherri and that they asked her to kill them on her deathbed. Especially after Cleo had convinced herself and everyone in Oakhurst that Apo is selfish. Imagine Pearl and Cleo realizing that "selfish" Apo ultimately had less blood on their hands than both of them? Definitely would've played into their trauma and both of them believing themselves to be monsters.

I still think about the ruined tower scene with apo and cleo and legs btw. all the time. "I'm okay doc."/"they're okay doc"/ and the PAUSE before legs's "...oh"

apo has legitimately been starving to death for their entire journey and is forced to reveal herself on her last bar of hunger. she can't say it, what she's been turned into. she doesn't need to. meanwhile, cleo is hungry, but they aren't starving (they have some red in their blood bar even)

cleo's spent her session confiding in her friends and securing allies to deal with her newfound vampirism. everyone who learns about cleo in this episode was told by cleo. apo told no one. apo heard their friends joking about killing sausage where he stood if he really was a vampire, and how would they know that it would be different for them, as martyn says later? martyn knows about cleo. apo doesn't know that martyn knows about cleo, just that "those who need to" know about cleo. and now someone knows, someone who apo considered a friend after they spent the first journey in oakhurst together, and it wasn't even because apo told him. cleo, who chose to tell others, only echoes apo's words and doesn't reveal anything, as she's been keeping their secret for the whole trip

cleo and apo, who have been bickering for the whole trip from apo mishearing cleo, are standing together when doc tells apo to come up. and cleo tells apo to breathe.

the tower being ruined and everyone being annoyed by getting up there. in frustration, cleo bats up to the tower but apo meticulously climbs up.

both their sires are revealed. doc's silence after apo says scott turned her. might be reading too much into it but the scott goldsmith hater alliance is strong

none of them show much of the aftermath of leaving the beacon (apo cuts off there entirely)...... but doc and cleo seem to go back to town without apo

all that to say I really wish apo and doc and cleo talked to each other in session 5 before the end. I think things would've changed, maybe even for the better

I've been thinking a lot about Apo's turning. Like, there were so many layers. She was lured out and offered up, chased down, drank from, threatened and then it didn't even stop there.

An impossible choice- we turn you into a vampire (something Apo doesn't know a lot about- like they barely know what is happening at this point and just trying to stay alive long enough to just figure it out) or you give up someone else and we eat them instead and turn them. Like- here's 24 hours to agonize over this decision- and also if you tell anyone (or anyone finds out, per Owens words) then we'll just straight up kill you. And also we will be watching you this whole time.

Like- I've been writing scenes from this time and I'm just realizing the levels of this. Apo couldn't get medical attention, they couldn't tell anyone, get advice, nothing. Also thinking about the way that Pyro, Owen, and Scott treat Apo at the crypt beacon and the hill- like they laughed, and hinted, and amused themselves with her distress.

And then the way Scott toyed with her before turning her. Twisting words, lying, threatening- hurting. He cornered Apo again and then still sank his fangs in.

And thinking about after. How the hurt must have festered. She wasn't allowed to be angry because being angry would have meant explaining- but she was angry. Apo was angry, and they were hurt and sad and scared just trying to survive.

Like, from an outside perspective Apo burning down their house seems very extreme. But I keep getting stuck on the way Apo turns their back to Pyro right before he drinks from them. The way he says "just stay still for me." The way Apo trusted him even then- the way the trust wasn't broken until he sunk in his fangs too.

Honestly I think I would have also burned the house down
