thinking about how esme had a baby boy who died incredibly young & yearned for another child but knew her first husband was a monster & another baby wouldn’t grow up happy or safe & when she finally was with a man who she loved so completely & knew was good, it was impossible to have a child & then the last movie didn’t even show her holding baby resume !! injustice !!

carlisle & esme celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on a vineyard in southern france .
during several of the family’s moves to the american midwest, esme rented a big pickup truck & did work on a few farms, hauling corn & grain & tending to livestock. growing & caring for things is one of her large passions, one she satisfies in washington by growing great big raspberry bushes in the backyard.

“ alice ! its about that time again ! ” college graduation was in a few days time & they were planning their next move, to start the cycle all over. esme would miss the closeness of their cousins in the alaskan north, but the promise of tall evergreen trees & the cold, rolling waves of the salish sea made her excited for their departure. she had the thin, wide architecture’s paper rolled out across the dining room table ( unused for any real dining ) the near-complete house plans sketched out in fine detail. “ I remember I promised you first pick last time we moved, ” esme said, no ounce of affection spared for her surrogate daughter. she pointed to four of the bedrooms on the second story, two towards the front & two towards the back. “ these are my favorites. what do you think ? ”

“ sit with me, ” esme patted the space beside her on the couch, facing out towards the porch. on days where the sun showed her face, the trees were lit up by its glow, making evergreen look orange. it was raining then, sheets of water pushed by the wind across the road, the clouds making the floors look blue. she turned towards him, just looking for a moment.
“ I know how it feels to be powerless, ” a century had passed & she still saw her ex-husband in the faces of passerby, heard him in the raised voices of strangers. healing was not achieved in the venom that carlisle had given her, but in learning how to live afterward. “ & I know you want to be there for your sister, but you do have a choice, beau. we’ll support you no matter what you decide, you’re family ( vampire or not ), ” a small smile & a hint of humor, smoothed slightly by the seriousness of their conversation. “ this isn’t your only option. ”

the walls of volterra were only slightly familiar to her, high & guarded- to an extent the people who milled around it’s streets knew not. the first time she had come here was shortly after her wedding. they had made it small, private, a courthouse affair ( carlisle had grappled with holding in a church for so long, but damnation & the words of his father were a burden that still weighed heavy on his heart & mind. if you change your mind, we can always renew our vows, esme had promised, squeezing his arm. he smiled then, a melancholy he didn’t often let show touching his eyes ). aro heard of it days afterward & requested their presence. she could remember walking through those halls, marble making their footsteps eco between grand walls. he will ask for your hand, carlisle had murmured to her. give it to him.
this occasion was different, a festival. the invitations, with their large script & elegant seal, always put her at unease. but still they came, a flight from seattle to florence passing slowly, her fingers tapping against the armrest absentmindedly until an elderly men turned around pointedly in his seat to glare at her. sorry ! she mouthed & carlisle chuckled quietly. it was afternoon when they arrived, sunglasses & hats shielding them from the bright noon sun.
the hall was much the same as it had been the last time they had been summoned, white stone polished to perfection. vampires milled around the large room, conversing with each other & paying respect to the trio that sat upon their high thrones. cloaks differentiated the visitors from the guard, spread out amongst the crowd. there was one such member that brought a smile to her lips when she saw her- corin.
their conversation was as casual as they could manage in such a place, but it grew hushed as esme asked her the simple, staple, sometimes dangerous question : how are you ? the answer held more honesty than she expected in their setting, & she led them both away from the others, a stroll down the hallway, voice as quiet as she could make it. “ carlisle left. so did eleazar, just a few years ago. you can do it too. ”
