Oh, he’s a good guy, a good friend.  I’ve known him since.. as long as I can remember.  He’s /chuckles/ a bit of a jerk sometimes, but he means the world to me.  Wish he’d stop putting rats in my bed, though.

/Thinks back.  It was with Nikita, a cute, playful little kiss as they returned to the Red Line after a mission.  The thought makes him smile./

No, I wouldn't.

Every day it was the same.  Maybe it was that the routine felt good; Pavel had always liked a solid routine, morning day and night.  It helped keep things on track.

Well, it hadn’t changed.  Every day he woke up, and he made his way to the kitchen, blinking away sleep, and made two cups of coffee.  One of them, he would drink, silently sipping it until he either finished it or lost interest.  And the other, he would set in the same spot on the kitchen table, right in front of the other empty seat.  Artyom’s seat.

And that cup of coffee would grow cold, sitting there for minutes and hours until finally, Pavel would pick it up and dump it into the sink.

Artyom was dead, of course - and the dead didn’t drink their coffee.  Regardless, it felt right to keep up the daily actions… as if, perhaps, Artyom could see him from wherever he was, and appreciated the gesture.

This day felt different, though.  It had been exactly three years--three years of making cups of coffee to be ignored, of leaving space on the bed, of cleaning unused laundry--since the accident, and not once had Pavel felt even a single break in the endless gloom, the empty void left in his lover’s absence.  Yet somehow, this day, something must have crossed through his head without himself realizing it - because he found himself searching for his personal handgun, taking it from its drawer.  Mindlessly, he reloaded it, numbly feeling over the cold metal with tired fingers that had once caressed another man’s face.  It was only as he locked himself in his bedroom, clutching the gun to his chest, that he realized that the change he had felt, that sudden break in the monotony…

He was done.  Three years of suffering and finally, his mind was giving him the break he had so desperately needed.  He put the gun to his head and closed his eyes… and Artyom’s face swam before him, smiling and beckoning him.

"Come home, Athos.  Come back to me."

“I’m coming, d’Artagnan.”  A deep breath.  “I love you.”

He pulled the trigger.

Artyom watched the scene, as if through Pavel’s eyes. None of this was familiar to him, and he tried to focus, straining his vision and his ears just to understand what was happening. W-what were they talking about? Something about … the virus at Oktyabrskaya … their plans to take out the whole metro with it? With Pavel? God, why did he have to see this …

No- wait. Korbut mentioned something important. The Reds would make their next move while Miller was at the peace conference, discussing D6. Bastards. Artyom wouldn’t let this happen.

But the Dark One was showing him something else. He wasn’t just watching the scene play through. He could feel it- understand it through Pavel’s eyes.It was as if this divination gave him a higher understanding of the situation. As if he could see the world- how the metro functioned through Pavel’s eyes.Though it didn’t make sense to him, he could … understand- almost feel Pavel’s motives now. He had orders. And just as Artyom had to follow his, Pavel… had no choice.

And then suddenly the vision broke. There were hands. Dark, leathery hands, and they were grabbing for him- no, grabbing for Pavel. Oh god what was happening? He’d seen this before, but it was almost as if they were after him.

A good Communist, Pavel had never believed in things like Hell - but if there was a Hell, this had to be a thousand times worse.  

As if it wasn't hard to breathe before, now, it felt like sucking in air solely through a tiny tube, and half of what came through said tube was a thick liquid that filled his lungs a little more with each inhale.  The hands were everywhere, and they were closing around him, around his chest and throat, and they pinned his arms so he couldn't struggle, and all he could hear was screaming and a terrible ring in his ears--

There was Artyom.  Now, Pavel didn't care how scared he might look - and in fact, his eyes were wide open, frantic, full of tears and regret and fear.  He tried to call out, but there wasn't enough air in his lungs, and he knew that he just couldn't die here, not like this-- 

And he gasped, gasped in inhale after raspy inhale, until finally, eyes locked onto Artyom, he could choke out, "A-Artyom?  D'Artagnan?  You-- Y-you can't leave-- leave me like this, please--"  don't abandon me, not here, not now  "--Help me--"
