17. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have a unique connection - not romantic but more than brotherly. They learned that their friendship was so profound that they could not live happily without each other.
16. Sherlock Holmes' "final case" is only the final case that was documented. He never again did his own detective work, though he consulted and assisted other detectives from time to time, teaching them his thought processes. He did this until the end of his days.
15. Any stories about cases that were not written by Sherlock Holmes or John Watson were written by Watson's only son, who found John's notes among his belongings, long after John's death.
14. Sherlock loves his detective work, because it keeps his mind busy. However, he hates London, and always looks forward to the day when he can retire from both detective work and the city.
13. Sherlock Holmes dislikes and distrusts women because he has never had an intimate relationship with one that worked out in his favor.
12. Moriarty had a family once: a wife and a couple of kids. However, upon learning of Sherlock Holmes' intellect and detective work, he became obsessed with besting him. As a result, his wife left him, believing he paid more attention to his work than his family. He denies ever having a family, because he believes admitting the loss will make him seem weak.
11. When John writes about what has happened in the United States (or anywhere that is not in the United Kingdom), most of his information comes from reading newspapers. The rest is inference.
10. Sherlock Holmes tells everyone their case is "the most interesting" (despite his actual opinion). By showing this level of interest to his clients, he hopes they will always call on him to solve cases.
9. Sherlock Holmes has only ever been in love once. When it didn't work out, he threw himself into detective work. Soon he realized his true love was his work, and stopped having any intention of falling in love and getting married. He does, however, admire John for finding someone and marrying her, even if he may not always be able to show his support. On the days he cannot bring himself to show his support for John, he is jealous because it is something he will never have.
8. Sherlock Holmes is considered an amateur by many because no one fully understands his methods when he is doing his detective work. In fact, many believe that he is guessing and getting lucky.
7. Sherlock Holmes was hesitant to allow John Watson to write and publish stories about their adventures, because for a long time he did not want the fame - every time he solved a problem, it was simply for the joy of solving complex problems. He eventually understood that John Watson was not doing it to gain Sherlock fame; he was doing it because he wanted to remember everything, and the easiest way to do so was to have it all in writing.
6. Sherlock Holmes has difficulty showing that he understands human nature and human emotion, making people believe that he does not understand it. However, he understands everything about human nature - in fact, he often chooses to ignore it because he believes it gets in the way of his deductive and purely intellectual thinking.
5. Sherlock regrets his decision to keep John in the dark when he faked his death. He knew it was the right thing, however, because he knew a no-contact policy would keep John safe.

4. Sherlock Holmes thinks of John Watson as a brother, and Watson thinks the same of Holmes. Sherlock and his brother, Mycroft, while they admire and respect one another, do not have a great relationship, though there were points in his life when Sherlock wished they did. He originally agreed to be flatmates with John Watson because he hoped he could have a brotherly relationship that he lacks with Mycroft; however, he learned to love John like a brother, and no longer feels the need to have the relationship with Mycroft that he once desired.
3. Despite the fact that Sherlock Holmes has amazing powers of deduction and is more than willing to help solve an interesting or complicated case, after a while it gets old for him.
For the last several years that he was solving cases, every time someone came to him for help, he wondered, "Is this really what I will be doing for the rest of my life?"
2. Although his relationship with Irene Adler was not a romantic one, Sherlock Holmes was truly fascinated by the woman who bested him. He admits this to John, but would never say how much he thought about her and hoped to meet her again, this time to beat her.
