A spontaneous visit
Verso is staring at the roof. It's not leaking, he can't see a speck of light shine through either. He made it just in time for winter, but everyone gave him shit for procrastinating his preparations for so long. He'd just been busy.
Fixing up the fences, making sure he had a reasonable amount of grain saved up. That the barn he'd recently built was decently insulated. The winters didn't get that cold out here, but it was still something to worry about.
His back was a little sore, and his hair was still wet from the bath. Still, he couldn't move off his bed. His furs and cot no longer smell of him, but he can't help but wonder what he's up to.
It's been weeks. 24 days to be exact. Where has he been? Why hasn't he come lately? Well, he knows why he hasn't been around. Winters are considered to be slow seasons for crafters since traveling is harder and hunters got all they needed in fall.
But sometimes he still spontaneously appeared, didn't he? Had he ever seen him in the winter?
A sharp knock on his cabin door drew his attention. He sat up, thinking that whoever it was probably needed to be let in but then a burst of light and fresh air cut through the warmth of his home before disappearing with the loud bang of the door closing. Someone was panting, someone draped in the thickest scarf and wooliest of coats. He'd know that posture and shivering silhouette anywhere. If he had the chance, he was fairly sure he could distinguish his footsteps in a crowd.
Why? Because he made the hair on the back of his hair stand up whenever he entered his periphery. Because there was a deep sadness in him that he recognized and felt compelled to soothe. The coldness in his eyes couldn't hide the warmth of his soul, Verso could see it. It was there, mild and curling around the edges of his own body, almost like it was begging him to fully draw him out and expose his heart for him to see.
"Sorry for barging in," he blurted out suddenly, making his way to the roaring fire in the room. "Five leagues out the village and I couldn't even handle the cold for that long."
Verso said nothing, just looked as Yorick rubbed his gloved hands together over the flames. He lied back down, his heart thumping in his chest a little faster than usual. He was here. He was warming himself in his own home.
Verso closed his eyes, a small content smile overcoming his usual smirk.
"Are you staying for dinner?" Verso said after almost dozing off three times. He turned to see Yorick sitting in his favorite chair in the corner, his newly acquired barn cat sitting on his lap. He looks concerned, keeping his hands to himself, pressed against his chest.
Yorick's eyes turn from the cat to him in a split second, and then back to the cat.
"I didn't come here for food," Yorick said pensively, eyes still on the cat.
Verso sat up, intrigued. "You know, the tavern has a nice fireplace and food too."
"You don't go there anymore, though."
It was a quiet observation, so quiet, the roaring of the flames almost overcame it. Verso's breath caught in his throat, and he feigned having to clear it.
"Beef stew," Verso answered getting up and walking up to his two guests. He pet the cat a few times under Yorick's watchful gaze.
"It looks like you."
"The cat?"
Yorick hummed in response. Unable to resist, Verso moved his hand from the cat to his fellow Viera's head and patted it a few times before walking to what he considered to be his kitchen which was really a small sliver of counter space with some utensils. Truly, he was going to need a bigger space if Yorick was going to keep dropping in like... well, like he belonged there.
