Intro Terminology - Tangent Line

Tangent line: a line that touches the graph @ a single (two infinitely-close) point(s) 

It is used for determining the exact slope of the graph at that point

Intro Terminology - Secant Line

Secant line: any line that passes through the graph of a function at 2 points

It is used for approximating the slope of the graph between those points

By algebra, the slope m of the line through points P & Q is: 

Note: For multiple secant lines that share 1 point of intersection (Point "P") & do not share other points of intersection -- As the 2nd points of intersection get closer to P, the slopes of the secant lines get closer to the slope of the graph @ P (the 1st point)
