The 48 Hours After

It’s nice to have this little device, to distract us for when we’re feeling sad. We used to feel heartbreak, sure, but now it’s different. It’s strange. It’s new. Before, we’d sit in a pit of discomfort, feeling that crushing weight of “sadness”, that unrelenting tightness in our stomachs, that just…won’t…go...away. But now, we can swipe right  and we feel… better?

Have we gotten to this point, where we don’t need to feel sadness anymore? That we don’t need to process it anymore, writhing under the blankets in our bed, listless and tired, feeling that emotional cocktail of anger, fear, regret, betrayal and loneliness. We used to bear through it, and it supposedly made us stronger, But do we no longer need to experience that anymore?

In ways, yes. We swipe right, and we feel better. We browse through the catalogs of eligible, attractive singles in our area, people that represent the light at the end of this miserable tunnel. We pick and choose on how to find them, we filter them by race, height, proximity, how fast to connect and the communication method... there’s quite a variety. And then, that sadness goes away pretty quickly. To swipe right in the 48 hours after elicits a petty mix of vengeance and anger, as if to say, “Screw you for making me feel sadness! I can find someone else, maybe better than you, and faster than ever!"

But maybe it represents hope; that each person with that innocent little heart lovingly attached next to their picture, could be the love of your life, your soulmate, the one you will finally fall for... so you can finally end this ceaseless, wretched struggle.

It’s a strange new world, and I think I like it.

Little Blisters

I am covered in death. It manifests itself as little blisters on my body, warm to the touch, and inside each blister is a little rat, trying to get out, scratching the sides of the blister with its little paws; “Sir, can we please get out, sir? It’s too warm in here, these are unacceptable conditions for this type of establishment. We may be forced to call the Health Department and shut you down, your food safety rating has expired and you’re due for a renewal, and it’s only just the beginning of the year.“

This is my favorite type of writing; the kind that just comes spontaneously, like building a road as you run.

An awful, lurching, wretched, knuckle dragging beast of a human being, he lumbers across the room and forgets why he did, then lumbers back across the room, forgetting why he did...

Official Forest Documents

Official looking documents flew above the forest floor in the early morning, as various creatures and forest dwellers were waking up. The documents flitted and flew through the air and landed in the burrows and dens of some of the animals living there.

A family of rabbits opened up one of the documents. "Oh dear...", says the mother, "It's a notice of eminent domain. We need to move out in two weeks, they're building an inter-forest expressway through here..."

“That's outrageous!" yelled the father, "We just moved in! What day is the Public Hearing so we can protest this?"

Two more documents fluttered down.

"It says here the Public Hearing is next Tuesday."

The little one opened the second document. “It says here next Tuesday is the first day of school for me... I can't miss the first day of school, what if I fall behind?"

"Since when do you go to school?”, asked the father

"Since I received this document, it seems"

"Well the little one can't go, how about you?” the mother says, gesturing towards the father.

Another document fluttered down and the father opens it.

"Well according to this, it looks like I have a presentation that day, so I definitely can't go. It’s so soon, I have to prepare!"

"Since when do you make presentations?" asked the little one

"Since I received this document, it seems"

"Well we can't all be busy! What about the deer across the brook?? Can he go??"

"I can't go either!”, yelled the deer, "I just got a jury summons for that day!"

“What are we going to do??”, yelled the mother, “We just moved in, we can't move so soon!"

"How about I help?” said a lonely turtle. "I didn't get a document, and I'm pretty sure I'm free that day."

"How about you go fuck yourself?" said the mother, "Nobody asked you for your fucking opinion."

The Last Person Out After New Years

The last person out of the train station after New Year's, they rode that lonely escalator down and walked through the turnstiles, waving to the late night operator as they did. Finding their car was easy; it was the last one left in the lot. They drove home to the soft hum of NPR, and with the flicker of fireworks in their rearview mirror, they reflected on the year behind them, and contemplated the year ahead.

Clairvoyant

I can see everything, but I can't see you. What is your secret? Believe me when I say "I See Everything", I can see what the ant under your shoe is doing, I can see what goes on beneath the covers, I can see the gun in your jacket, the knife in your boot and the fear in  everyone's souls... but I can't see you, I can't see you. Don't you understand  how maddening it is? Tell me what  your secret is, TELL ME.
