HUMAN EXPENDITURE PROGRAM: TERRIBLE, RUSHED WRITING AND VERY CONCERNING MESSAGING
After playing H.E.P. these weekends, I've had.. a LOT of thoughts. Most of them, unfortunately, negative - especially after many discussions I had with others. I have many issues with bloodmoney! as a whole as well, but that's for the end. I had graciously compiled all my thoughts(both negative and positive) into these points. Special thanks to my best friend for grammar check and few added statements!! :o)
JUST because I criticize the game does not mean one is bad for enjoying it! There are plenty elements I found entertaining and enjoyable about the game. If it made you experience a lot of emotions and left a massive impact, then that's more than lovely! If it brings you enjoyment, even better! This is only criticisms brought up by me, my best friend and few mutuals of mine :o)

Eun-mi.. she is.. a character, for sure. The cruel and evil wife. While, yes, it's obvious she is the villain in all of this - by the end we're...kind of supposed to sympathize with her? It's weird. I feel like we're jumping from cartoonishly evil to "oh look she is regretting it". If she was consistent in her behaviour, then it'd be much more enjoyable and clear. Sure, every evil character has to have nuiance, but it did not feel like an attempt at giving character depth, but rather poor writing. The sudden freak out (that results in destroying the machinery) was completely out of nowhere. Generally, we do not linger on her emotions. We do not linger on her greed, nor do we linger on her regret. We are thrown hints at how she feels, but not enough to make an impression. What ARE we supposed to feel for her? Is her downfall actually supposed to feel satisfying, what does the author want us to feel? Because, personally? I felt nothing. So did the few people I let play this game. She is completely bare, she isn't a well-written character, and so by extent a villain. There is nothing to be engaged by, she has no significant qualities or interests. She is JUST there. We don't know anything about her asides the fact she is Harvey's money-hungry wife and the mother of Toby.
2. WOULD HARVEY ACTUALLY...?
I feel this game somehow manages to mischaracterize its own characters. Harvey, supposedly all kind and soft spoken, goes on to call his wife a Bitch the moment he realizes she is at the cause of it. Sure, he was in pain, and it felt like massive betrayal, but to not only use such a gendered insult, but to go outwards into malice. In the original, he did start insulting us, because we were obviously a stranger to him. But that is his wife of 10 years, it'd feel much more natural for him (supposedly a "rug" of a person) to feel hurt and betrayed than start immediately throwing insults. Perhaps blame himself, perhaps plead and beg and then turn to anger. Such a lash-out felt almost unwarranted due to how SUDDEN it was. The built-up was too slow, and the climax was too fast.
3.PLEASE, NOT THE MEDICAL TERMS AND SLANG!
The fact that so many medical and extremely modern terms (even if this takes place in the future? Which also isn't explained to us) are used completely breaks me out of the immersion. Any sort of intrigue I could've had is broken with "Gaslit", "Manipulated" and such being used in the "secret audio". If he were to say "She lied to me!" Instead of "She gaslit and manipulated me!", I would've had a much easier time feeling sympathy for Harvey. Instead, it feels unnatural and completely foreign to the context. In-game, meanwhile, his constant change of nicknames, constant use of specific slang (catch the Z's, babe, and such) once more threw me off. It's just..so out there, while Harvey is supposed to be a realistic individual. His speech is inconsistent. Although, yet again, it could be the fact we aren't introduced to the characters as people.
4.THE UNEXPLAINED FINANCIAL TROUBLES
Debt. What debt? For a story that tries to focus on how desperation can bring the worst in people - and that there is a much more righteous way of getting money - it fails on that message. We aren't explained how desperate they are, we aren't explained what debt they have or for how much. Sure, maybe it could be a bit unnecessary for the plot, because "it doesn't matter what it is they're trying to pay off, if anything", but I feel that would've added so much more nuance to the discussion. If it was medical debt, then we could see more depth in Eun-mi. If it was gambling/addiction-caused debt, then that could change how we view either for the characters. Student debt could be used to explain how hopeless the situation really is. And what about Harvey? Why did he agree in the first place, was it really their last (or easiest) option out there? He was hesitant, but nothing was done to give us any understanding of what was on the line. How did they even come to this conclusion?
5.WHY DO I NEED TO BE ON TWITTER FOR THIS?
This leads perfectly to one of my biggest gripes. I am a massive fan of Harvey, I looked up any information and scoured the net for him. Still, it does not mean that the creator is allowed to not add any context within the game. We aren't told that Harvey lost his job and was rejected/kicked out of multiple others. We aren't told the financial strain that had left on them. We DON'T know the stakes, leading to a lot of confusion as to WHY did they do this in the first place. It's bad writing to leave clues outside of the game unless that's the entire purpose (such as for an ARG, which it is not). Unfortunately, it is not done with that purpose. I am all for leaving things vague for the message, but it felt extremely underwhelming and confusing because of it. Not to mention, gave us NOTHING to latch onto. We don't know them, we know nothing about their interests, passions, love or even troubles - so why should we care for them? This should not be the case. Posting random facts on a website instead of making hints and direct references of it in-game is not a good way to make people care. No one outside of the fandom (which are there mostly for perverse interest and love for how Harvey looks) is gonna get invested. The game is so carried by its fandom, that it's pretty nonsensical outside of it.
6. THE ENDING AND DOXXING
Generally speaking, I think this was rather weird route to pull the story to. There are many reasons one would end up doxxed for.. but to be doxxed for what, REALISTICALLY, would be seen as ""meta ending"" is ridiculous. It came in like a slap across the face. It was completely out of nowhere and a weird way to show consequences. She already (in a way) killed her husband, that could've been a consequence in itself. Have her go into insanity, have her get investigated. Anything! But no, not only is the ending written in a weird manner, but we don't get anything to put emphasis on how deep of trouble she has gotten. Are we left to, just... Imagine? Again, I felt no weight. And truly, is doxxing really the worst thing that could've happened in these circumstances? It's a horrid thing, sure, but I think the literal disappearance of her own spouse is meant to carry more consequences.
7. WHAT IS H.E.P. AND WHAT DO YOU EAT IT WITH?
While playing, all I thought about was how Harvey was inserted in the first place. Is it a consciousness thing, is his entire body in a digital realm? If so, then how? Besides, how does bloodmoney bring money to eun-mi? Are others buying it, is it the mere downloads that generate income? Is it something in-game (such as purchases), or something H.E.P. provides for simply having people interact with the person inserted? We were told the booth will be explained, but nothing was explained. We were left with more questions. All we now know is that Eun-mi published the original BLOODMONEY! game, but that's about it. Again, nothing is told to us and twitter is not gonna be a good excuse!
8. BLANK SCREENS AND TEXTS
Another massive gripe I have with this game is the fact that..not only is narration texts used frequently, but on a completely blank screen. It's shockingly under-used. The game could've been easily paced better using them - describe everything in better details, linger on emotions, perhaps delve more into the turmoils Eun-mi had. Instead, we get small lines that carry, once more, no weight! We are given such meaningless text just to transition us from day 1 to 7 (which we skip by at some point). Some stuff was so badly worded, I had a really hard time understanding what was even said. Some parts were graced with a bit of substance, but not enough to make us feel anything for the characters. Not to mention, the sheer confusion that the contradicting statements bring (in discussion of Eun-mi's emotional turmoil) to the overall situation. If we have such low effort areas, then why were they so under-used? Of course, the text being followed with images would be both ideal and easy, but if having blank-screened segments was an option - why wasn't it used to its full extent?
9. THE BROKEN PREMISE
This is my general critique of both of the games. Even if the creator is denying it, and even if it's unintentional - it follows the standard steps of a torture fetish game. I see nothing wrong with it being a fetish game, I simply don't like that it wasn't labelled as such if the creator DID make it intentional. I've heard even personal accounts of people who aren't in the fandom tell me they see it as nothing but a torture fetish game. The game did not need deeper lore, it could've simply stayed that. If lore was gonna be necessary, then at the parts where it matters - HOW are we getting the money? Who is giving us the money? How does the booth actually work? It didn't need a deeper message, in fact the message ("desperation brings out the worst in people, especially when money is on the line") is portrayed so poorly that it seems to backfire. The bad ending completely ruins the entire premise by having the surgery be cosmetic. There's no nuance added to the discussion with the game, and instead sends a nasty message. Sure, circumstances do not excuse you from doing abhorrent things, but to go for the "oh you're just a sadist" route makes the fetish emphasis worse. Also, with the stuff I've seen the creator tweet about Harvey - just because Harvey is a white, cis, hetero and neurotypical man, does not mean he's immune to a hate crime. Hate crimes can be targeted towards anyone, for any reason. We wouldn't be torturing him for being a certain way, we'd be torturing him because he gives us money for that. It's something I've been confused about since I've started looking at information about this game.
The good of it:
1.VOICE ACTORS
Evidently, the amazing work of the voice actors carried the game. In my honest opinion, their delivery saved a good chunk of the dialogue. Although a bit too dramatic at times, I liked the life it brought into the (barely worked on) characters!
2.THE VISUALS
I quite enjoyed the look of both games !! It has a pretty unique artstyle with a pretty solid color palette. While it's not the most visually stunning game to have ever existed, it's pleasing to the eye!! I like the character designs, as simple as they are.
3.THE MINIGAMES
Despite the rather confusing premise of one of them, the rest were actually quite fun! Knowing the engine, probably not super easy to do. They were short, engaging and had a fun premise! Especially the baseball one.
To summarize:
In my opinion, the writing is its worst flaw. The dialogues are very dramatic, and yet very vague. While I got the point of the game and the plot it was trying to portray, I feel that it was done in a way that makes the experience pretty unsatisfying and underwhelming. The message did not come through neither of the games, the second game suffered from the sheer rush of it all and imo had a weird air of pretentiousness. In fact, due to how rushed and unexplained it was, it came off as also unintentionally(hopefully) sexist.
While I see the effort of the creator, I feel like trying to publish it while the hype is there was a horrible idea. A lot of very cowardly writing decisions were made on the creator's part. The characters lack substance, they lack everything that would make them feel like actual people and we were barely explained anything, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.
P.S.: Don't love fandom's treatment of Eun-mi. If Harvey was the villain, most of the things you guys say about her wouldn't even be uttered about Harvey - Harvey is intentionally written as a very sweet and innocent man (especially if one’s to consider what the creator has said about him on twitter) who is also portrayed as feminine in many aspects, such as dyeing his hair, baking or even having a small penis (yes that is canon and for some reason we had to know). Please don’t play into the –VERY HOPEFULLY UNINTENTIONALLY – sexist tropes within the game by treating Eun-Mi as a flat cardboard image made only to be hated while idolising her husband. Acknowledge that this is misogynistic writing of a female character, whether the author wanted it to be this way or not, and remember that what you say about women is real even if Eun-Mi is not.

I wanted to draw Harvey and Eun-mi with a baby Toby. Kind of related to an idea I have for a short comic with them :)
Harvey talks about Toby so much, he's mentioned in 3 of the 7 days (twice in Day 7) ! He's such a good dad, yet he never got to say goodbye... I had to draw him being happy with his son at least once.
In contrast, I've seen a lot of theories that Eun-mi only wanted to have Toby to try and fix the marriage, and I completely agree. We don't know for sure how good of a mother she was, but HEP gave me some doubts...
It is time for me to yap about my thoughts about the location of Harvey's body in HEP!
So, I made a post recently, wondering where it is. And I've been thinking about it since
Crazy yap incoming!! And hep spoilers if people still care about those!
When I first played the game, the intro made me think of Harvey being put into some kind of machine/putting on a headset or something like that. Cause how else would you feel the jolt. And then a question followed.
Where would that be happening?
I had an idea of HEP happening in some sci fi setting, where there could be a service that would put a person into some kind of digital space and take care of them for a fee (that's why Eun-mi spends that much money on feeding and playing with Harvey) But it's a bit too far fetched, and I don't think a company would let it's customers die or delete themselves
Another idea is portable device to be used at home, possibly obtained from a barely legal place, hence why they wouldn't care what happens to the customer. But then Harvey's body would be at their home. Which would make sense, but Toby still lives there and hiding his dad's unconscious body for a whole week seems like a really hard task
A similar theory is that Eun-mi made a machine for that herself, but she couldn't fix the reset remote, and Harvey's body would still be at their house so I don't believe this could work
I now realize I forgot about the remote. There's no way a public company would offer that. It could've been bought from somewhere as a "mod/extra tool" or something
Now I come to my last theory. The one I like the most, even though it's probably dumb
You know how the concept of teleportation devices is copying a person's atoms and then rebuilding them from scratch? What if that's exactly what went off in the human expenditure program? The atoms are stored somewhere as data to be displayed in the two games Eun-mi made (do not ask me how that works I have no idea ok)
And the universe is set a bit further in the future to allow that massive amount of data to be stored and processed quickly enough to work properly! Maybe the "turn a person into data" service is so new and/or mundane that it's easily available hence Eun-mi not knowing what she's doing that well
