I want this to reach everyone in the world!
Sometimes we need to be aware of our outlook in life and reframe our inner conversation. I'm not talking about positive thinking but acknowledge that our welbeing in life is largely dependent on our perspective and shifting it towards more satisfaction instead of the opposite.
Me on a daily basis...
Depression, bullying and being a teenager
I was bullied from the day I entered nusery and throughout school and still frequently find bullies in the workplace. I've seen the havoc it can cause on mental health and how long term the effect can be. However, it's not really a 'serious' thing to have experienced, right, being teased? It's harmless and happens to everyone, no? Some people won't understand and others will understand all too well. The loneliness, the constant fear of what will come next, the slow destruction of one's confidence and self-esteem before it's even had a chance to develop, the link to depression and anxiety which can lead to self-harming, suicidal ideation, anorexia, poor relationship patterns... A new study suggests people who've experienced bullying will suffer more severe long term effects than those who's been abused. Why might this be, if true? Because those suffering abuse seem counselling sooner as it's considered a far more serious experience than bullying? Because the abuse is often done by one or few (and limits one's suffering) whereas bullying is often done by the masses (and you start fearing all)? Because abuse can make you headsteong in school, therefore popular and therefore grow confidence outside the abuse whereas victims of abuse seldom get a chance to find their voice before it's been silenced? I don't know, I'm merely asking? I want to do my Masters in the long term effects of bullying. Any insight, feel free to comment. "(...) These kids are usually the ones who don’t cause any problems at school or at home, which is exactly why they are easy to overlook. You could hear teachers say good things about them or describe them as quiet, good kids. However, the quiet, good kids may also be very sensitive, self-conscious and emotional kids, who internalize rather than externalize their problems. In cases when adolescents like that become depressed, there is a serious cause for concern and an earlier intervention may prevent significant consequences, including suicide or mental illness later in life." http://blogs.psychcentral.com/practical-psychoanalysis/2015/10/depression-in-adolescence-5-insights-every-parent-needs-to-know/
I failed at adulting again today!
Equality for all.
Thought provoking article about the continued sexism in publishing. Sad to live in a society where the male voice is still valued as higher, instead of equal to that of a woman. J. K. Rowling famously had to hide she was a woman, using only her initials to entice male readers but despite her huge success, proving women can write read-worthy books appealing to all genders, this hasn’t changed the discrimination against female writers. What saddens me even more is that female agents/publishers don't seem to fight this lack of equality and pave the way for a new generation of female authors but continue the bias. Makes me wonder when I sent out my next MS if I should pretend to be my boyfriend….
A week ago I would have told you I'm not a crime/thriller kinda girl, then I went and got The Girl on the Train for my boyfriend, except he never got to read it as I consumed it instead. Then came across this one Before I Go to Sleep and been giddy with excitement to get hold of it - unable to wait, reading the first bit via Kindle's free sample - and just LOVE the concept. So far, it's well written, well paced and intriguing. Guess what I'll be doing for the rest of the day!!
I'm lucky to have this in my life! :-)
After all the fuss I went to borrow this at the library for my boyfriend who likes crime books. I find them tedious and the formula boring. However, I got curious and read page one... Then two... Then 80 and annoyed every time I have to put it down. What a clever way of writing a crime novel! Even inspired an new idea of my own. Might be time to go back and sit at my writing bureau ;-) Though I'm wondering how this book is being received by men as it's not a typical book about a male detective?
