Wreaths, Hats, and Grain Measures
Roman gods wear a lot of stuff on their heads, especially wreaths/crowns. Hereâs a quick overview for when sources mention iconography without explaining further.
Laurel Crown - Corona Triumphalis, Laurea Insignis: A triumphal crown of laurel or bay leaves, or a golden version thereof. Associated with Apollo.
Lunate diadem - Worn by Diana and Luna. The diadem in general is also used for goddesses as a mark of divinity, especially for Juno and Ceres.
Modius - Named by modern scholars, this headdress resembles a grain-measure and is presumed to symbolize abundance/fertility. Worn by Serapis.
Mural Crown - Corona Muralis: A crown bearing the city walls, commonly worn by Cybele and tutelary deities such as Tyche. A military version was awarded to the first man who scaled the wall of a besieged city.Â
Petasus - A flat hat worn by Mercury, originally a sign of travelers in Greek iconography.
Phrygian cap - Worn by âorientalâ gods, either Trojan or simply foreign easterners. Typical of Attis, Mithras, Men, Sabazius, Ganymede, Paris, Orpheus, Aeneas, and Ascanius, among others. Its usage grew considerably in Late Antiquity and was picked up by some Christian iconography as well.
Pileus - A conical felt hat worn by the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), Vulcan, and occasionally Ulysses. Also worn by freedmen and thus symbolic of Libertas.
Spoked Crown - Corona Radiata: Radiant as though with the rays of the sun, this was the one given to the gods and deified heroes, and later assumed by some of the emperors as a token of their divinity. Associated with Sol Invictus.
Vine Crown - Corona Pampinea: The crown of vine leaves worn by Bacchus/Dionysus.
Wheat Crown - Corona Spicea: Made of ears of corn, consecrated to Ceres and among the most ancient of crowns (according to the Romans at least).
Others:
Grass Crown - Corona Graminea/Obsidionalis: Highest military honor, presented by a beleaguered army after its liberation to the general who broke up the siege. It was made of grass, or weeds and wild flowers gathered from the spot on which the beleaguered army had been enclosed.
Civic Crown - Corona Civica: Presented to a soldier who had preserved the life of a Roman soldier in battle. Made of oak leaves. Later assumed by the emperors and common in their iconography.
Stitched Crown - Corona Sutilis: Used by the Salii at their rites. Made of flowers sewn together instead of woven into a wreath. Later roses alone were used.
For more military and ritual crowns/wreaths, check out the LacusCurtius article here: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/secondary/SMIGRA*/Corona.html
(Not included are Minervaâs helm, which is fairly recognizable on its own and doesnât appear to have a specific name, and the many iterations of Isisâs headdresses, which I know too little of to parse. If anyone would like to add on the forms of Isisâs head gear, please feel free!)
eBay ... Caveat Emptor
There are a few books I have eBay search alerts set for. Not because theyâre necessarily out of print, currently, but because I want a specific edition, or the hardback version, or something similar.
Results for one such book popped up in my email recently: Jake Stratton-Kentâs The True Grimoire: Encyclopedia Goetica Volume 1. As you can see from the following picture, the seller is offering the paperback version of this book with a starting bid of $40.00USD, and a âbuy it nowâ price of $80.00USD.Â
(I hope you can already tell where Iâm going with this)
âThat feels a bit steepâ - I say to myself. So, I do a little due diligence and head over to [the publisherâs catalog page for the book].
After shipping costs and currency conversion⊠$31.08USD
Once again, for those in the back:Â
THIRTY ONE DOLLARS AND EIGHT CENTS!
Even after international shipping thatâs still $50 less than the buy-it-now price, and $10 less than the opening bid! Â
The takeaway here is, be careful when buying books on eBay. Check if the version theyâre selling is the version thatâs still in print, and if it really is the sold-out or out-of-print version, do a little cross-referencing to see how much itâs been selling for recently (if that data is available).
Caveat emptor, my friends âŠÂ Caveat emptor.
This is actually an important warning for anyone buying secondhand books on Occultism and the like. Most of the "rare" books you find for high prices on eBay and Amazon are nearly half the price.
A Potion to Commune with an Animal Familiar
Working with spirit familiars is a common practice in many magical traditions. They act as guides, escorting Witches through the astral realms and aiding us in our magical workings. According to legend, familiar spirits can manifest themselves in animal form. When this apparition occurs, the Witch should take steps to strengthen the newly-formed bond. As the relationship between Witch and familiar develops, so too will the gifts they bestow.
@phat-lava requested a potion to commune with an animal familiar through dreams. To achieve this, I have written the following. As always, use caution when taking potions internally. Keep the #potionrequests coming!
Equipment Required
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Boiling Crucible
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Mortar and Pestle
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Glass Vial
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Measuring spoon
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Wooden Spoon
- Â Â Â Â Â Sieve
Ingredients Needed:
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 475ml Pomegranate Juice (2 cups)
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 44ml Absinthe (1 shot; available from any well-stocked liquor store)*
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The skin of 1 red apple
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1 fresh fig
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1 tablespoon valerian root
-         œ teaspoon poppy seed
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 13 rose hips
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1 tablespoon of chamomile flowers, dried
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1 teaspoon of honey
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Essence of the animal spirit, optional (feather, fur, etc)
INSTRUCTIONS
1.       Heat the pomegranate juice over a high heat and bring to a boil.
2.      Lower the heat and bring the juice to a simmer then add the absinthe.
3.      Contribute the apple skin.
4.      Take the fresh fig and grind it into a fine paste using the mortar and pestle.      Contribute this to the brew.
5.      Raise heat and bring to a boil while stirring and concentrating on your           intent. Allow it to boil for five minutes.
6.      Set the heat to its lowest setting and let the potion return to a simmer.
7.       Add the valerian root and continue simmering for five minutes. Â
Make certain the potion is not allowed to return to boil after this point lest the properties of the valerian root are destroyed.
8.      Stir in the poppy seeds.
9.      Contribute the rose hips, one at a time, while concentrating on your intent.
10.    Add the chamomile flowers and simmer for five minutes.
11.     Contribute the honey, stirring vigorously to ensure it is well-blended into         the potion.
12.    If you have the animal essence, ensure it is clean then simply touch it to        the surface of the potion.
13.    Remove the potion from the heat and allow it to cool. Once cool, strain it       through a fine sieve.
14.   Pour off the potion into a small glass vial.
15.    Ingest the potion right before bed while concentrating on that which is          sought: communion with your animal spirit. In @phat-lavaâs case, this          would be the raven.
*Nota Bene: for a non-alcoholic version, you can substitute one ounce of dried wormwood.Â
ANALYSIS:Â Pomegranate and Absinthe (a wormwood derivative) have long been associated with the other world. Apples and figs also have spirit associations. Chamomile, valerian, rose hips, and poppy seeds all bring sleep. The animal essence can be used to heighten the strength of this working, but if your mind is strong enough, the animal essence isnât required.
Working on a little something. I'll be posting a bit more than usual soon. Love you friends <3 #osc #stcyprian #avecyprianus #esoteric #esotericchristianity #prayers #occult #occultism

Thought I'd post my latest little project đ. This is a headband for use with the Headless One ritual, described in the PGM. The symbol in the front is called the "Beneficial Sign". A great article about this powerful rite was authored by one of my favorite scholars and practioners, @polyphanes. Go and check out his article if you want to know more. I would also suggest purchasing Jake Stratton-Kent's booklet from Hadean Press named, unsurprisingly, "The Headless One". Is there a special way to consecrate tools? Is there a source I can read how to from or is it simple?
Good morning! Good question.
Tool consecration may vary depending on which branch of magic you study and practise. In terms of ceremonial magic the Grimorium Verum offers the formula and method to bless and consecrate pretty much everything; the knife, the virgin parchment, the wand, salt, water, ink.
Also the Book of Black Magic by Waite has a pretty expansive chapter on how to consecrate the tools. Itâs in part 2 chapter 2. Most of the information is straight from the Verum anyway, but he just expands on the method and gives some insight into their significance.
Hope this helped! Thanks for your question âșïž
Sorry just to expand, in terms of a âspecial wayâ then there certainly is, again this is from my ceremonial magic practises but I imagine any consecration follows the same formula. Usually you take whatsoever tool you wish to be consecrated; the dagger or wand or whatever. You then give orations of prayer, blessings and general spells over them. You then usually fumigate using a censer burning whatever perfumes or substances your instructed to, all the while still repeating these prayers and blessings. Then you usually sprinkle them with holy water or oils and again entirely depending on what text your using thatâs pretty much it. As previously discussed after itâs completed itâs usual to keep these tools concealed and protected, by wrapping them in cloth and sealing them in chests.

To Deaden the Spectral Senses
For those who spy or listen to you with non-physical eyes or ears. Go to a a place that has become barren. The land will be burnt and brown. You will name the sorcerer upon a nail. Breathe their name upon it.  âAs iron turns and burns the ghost,  Divorced be from spirit host.â You will place it in the ground lightly. You will drive it into the ground with the butt of a black handled knife. âThey who feed the hounds a name,  who, at me, their eyes would aim,  and ears be pricked just the same,  make their senses limp and lame.â You will spit upon the nail, stomp it with your heel, grind it in as your turn away, and walk from the place.
One of my favorite plants for Friday the 13th? Great Mullein. Whether youâre looking to work witchcraft or protect yourself from it, the plant has you covered. Looking to raise the dead or call spirits? Use the stalk, dipped in tallow or wax, as a torch or take the leaves and form them into smaller tallow candles. Looking to stay the charms of witches and the ill will of spirits? Hang the plant over your door or wear it as a charm. This duality is reflected in the plantâs biology. Though being hailed as a plant that did much healing work, helping with lung and cold problems, its roots and seeds contain poison, especially used to drug fish for an easy catch. So whether you want to be the fish-catcher or the cold-curer, get to know your local mullein.Â

Viking travelerâs amulet, based on the LillbjĂ€rs picture stone. The back reads: âUnharmed Go Forth, Unharmed Return, Unharmed Back Homeâ, Friggaâs blessing to Odin, possibly from VafĂŸrĂșðnismĂĄl.
Iâm going to take the amount of notes and new followers this got me in a day as a sign that it works and itâs image will bless your blog with Friggaâs blessing to Odin. Thank you tiny rune talisman.
This is dope.Â
It lives here now
This post like blows up my phone every couple days for months now, and ngl it really makes me happy. I try not to post about this too much because I really try to keep my internet presence positive now, but I do have some pretty rough days and it really seems to help my mental health to know that so many strangers find me and what I do on this blog interesting. Thanks tumblr. Thanks in particular to @meehyun for being my girlfriend irl, wearing matching bracelets with me, and always being here for me, I would not be here without you. I love you. Thanks @systlin for being a true homie and helping me build my blog up out of the kindness of your heart or something, like youâre really nice to me and I appreciate it. But to anyone and everyone else out there reading this, thank you for existing and doing what you do. You never know how your small actions will effect other people, and so any time you do something nice you may not realize the true impact you can have on anotherâs life. Sometimes just a smile from a stranger is enough to make your day much better, and thatâs really how you guys make me feel. Imagine if everyone you passed genuinely smiled at you, and not in a weird horror movie way, in a friendly way that makes it seem as though your meer presence has brightened their day, and they simply wish to extend the same courtesy to you. You guys make me feel like that. You probably make a lot of people feel like that, so whenever you feel bad remember that youâre important, and your kindness is important. And remember that youâve probably made a lot of random people happy, simply by being yourself.
This post made me feel good.
Friggâs blessing to Odin is indeed from VafĂŸrĂșðnismĂĄl, in the fourth stanza, where she says to him,
Heill ĂŸĂș farir! heill ĂŸĂș aftr komir! heill ĂŸĂș ĂĄ sinnum sĂ©r!
In Bellowâs translation from 1936, it is beautifully and poetically rendered like this,
Safe mayst thou go, safe come again, And safe be the way thou wendest!
