Not convinced myself, doesn't sound great and does anyone apart from techies really use "panel" to refer to a TV? If it were me, I'd go with iScreen or iVision or something else. But it definitely won't be iTV.

My Sister's family don't have a television in the house, and all their consumption of video is through streaming services and DVDs. According to her, this article on minimalmac.com is exactly how her five-year old daughter feels about broadcast television.

Let's face it, if broadcast television did not already exist, anyone proposing such a service now as a rival to streaming services would probably be laughed out of the room, "It's like Hulu or Netflix, but everyone has to watch the same thing at the same time. There will be adverts, but they wont be targeted except by guessing what sort of person likes the show because we will show the same one to everyone. Oh we'll also be using the most valuable part of the spectrum to get this into these huge dedicated screens that will be fixed to the walls pretty close to their internet connection... What? well I suppose we could have them connected to the internet as well, but that would just be a niche service" Of course because it does already exist, it won't go anywhere for a while yet, but the broadcast networks really need to start thinking about the future of their product.

Samsung not concerned about Apple

Samsung, the current market leader in connected TV products says that it is not concerned about the rumours regarding the entry of Apple into the connected TV market.

It's been noted that Palm pretty much made the same sort of claims just before Apple brought out the iPhone.

I don't think the future of connected TV is in specialist add-on boxes. That requires someone to actually want the service and then go out and buy it. The future is the capability embedded into a product you will already use: a DVD/Blu-Ray player, a games console, a cable box or the television set itself. That way the service is already in the users' homes when they want to use it. It looks as though Apple have come to the same conclusion as rumour abounds that they will be launching an upgrade of their apple TV product in which the capabilities are integrated into a television set.

I'm not sure if I believe they will call it the iTV though, while it makes sense from brand consistency along with the iPod, iPad, iPhone etc, there is no way that the UK's ITV will let them launch with that name in the UK, and maybe not even in the EU, and apple don't strike me as the sort of company to want to have brand fragmentation i.e. iTV in the US, appleTV in the EU.

Having said that, with the financial clout Apple Inc has, they could buy the ITV companies outright and shut the network down just to get the name

Google TV seems to be having a Lazarus moment. Its poor uptake since launch and the abandonment of the platform by key partner Logitech left the android-based television platform looking as though it was at death's door. But now, only a few days after it is rumoured that LG will launch TVs based on Google TV at CES, it looks as though Samsung will be doing the same thing.

These are big name brands, and of course they already work with Google on Android for their smart-phones so perhaps this is not that surprising.

I don't think there is room for too many Connected TV platforms in the marketplace and Google may be in a position to bring rival brands together with a single platform as they have done with Android

TalkTalk are reportedly starting a test roll out of YouView early next year. This is interesting as TalkTalk already have their own IPTV platform TalkTalkTV (formerly TiscaliTV and before that HomeChoice). I wonder how the two services will integrate.
